We travelled all the way from Glasgow to Ullapool, having stayed there back in April and vowed we would return. However, the hotel we tried to book in to (the one we stayed at in April) was fully booked, much to our disappointment having came all that way. It's the Harbour Lights Hotel, but the way, which I believe isn't listed on Trip Advisor - if you get the chance, you must try it, highly recommended, a quaint, family run hotel with lovely rooms and excellent food!
We tried a couple of other hotels (the Swallow Caledonian Hotel being one of them - stay well clear of that one!) and finally ended up at The Royal (also having tried it in April in the middle of all the refurb and walked out after being shown a room!)
All very different this time round though! Having being shown two different double rooms and opting for the latter, we managed to bargain a good rate with the receptionist (a man with an german shepherd..?!?!). The corridors have still to be refurbished - quite tired in places and very 'busy' wallpaper.
We got settled into our room, very spacious with french doors leading onto a large veranda which offered stunning views over the loch. The bathroom had been completely renovated since our last visit. Lovely floor and wall tiles and hugh corner shower unit. The room itself was fine, although cleanliness could have been better - stains on bed throw/cushions and carpet could have been doing with a vacuum.
We decided to dine and the hotel, which was ok but could have been better - vegetables were almost unrecognisable and chips were completely inedible. However, all staff were very friendly and courteous. We had a drink in the bar afterwards, which was nice, natural wooden beams giving it a kind of log cabin feel! We left after one drink due to the cool air (smokers outside had the front door ajar) but we probably would only have stayed for the one anyway!
The only actual complaint I would have about my stay was the bed! It was the worst night's sleep I've had in a long time. You could feel every single spring in the matress, which squeeked every time you moved. I woke up several times - it was a long night!
Breakfast the following morning was excellent - a good continental selection from the buffet table plus a full cooked breakfast with tea, coffee and toast.
Overall, we had a lovely stay at the Royal Hotel and would definitely return if we were in Ullapool again. It's a nice place to visit but when you've been a couple of times, you kind of run out of things to see and do! Definitely recommended though!
