“Super hotel very reasonably priced will be back”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2011

It was our first time to Ullapool and we decided to book the reservation so we could look at another self catering accomodation 24 miles further up in the Highlands so needed an overnight stop as we were based in Fort Augustus for fortnight.I booked over the phone to see if we could have a sea view room and very kindly we were upgraded to a honeymoon suite with a 4 poster bed for no extra cost.It was a lovely room and very clean. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast absolutely superb cooked to order which is unusual in a big hotel. We have rebooked for next July.

Stayed for one night (11th July) as a couple with a coach party of 29. Very conveniently located for Ullapool -Stornaway ferry, at one end of the main road, tucked in behind a garage, just across the road from the Loch. Lovely view down the Loch from the Hotel forecourt. Only a few minutes stroll from the centre of Ullapool. Pleasant, clean double room (#37) at the rear of the hotel with views up the ‘mountain’. Newly refurbished shower room, but only one easy chair in room (surely a double room should have two chairs?). Limited choice at evening meal (as usual for party bookings) but still perfectly adequate, and food nicely cooked and presented. Good buffet breakfast. Staff friendly and attentive. Cannot comment on value for money as travelling with group.

We booked the Hotel before reading the reviews, but we read them before coming here. So we were a bit of anxious what to expect. When we arrived, we were a bit disappointed. One reason was, that the hotel is not located where Google Maps shows. There must have been an other hotel by this name earlier. Google Maps shows a location a bit outside of town, directly facing Loch Broom, no road in between. Fact is, between the hotel and Loch Broom there the Hotel parking lot and Garve Road. But during our stay of 6 days we didn't really feel bothered by that. When we booked, the only room available was the 4 poster bedroom on groundfloor with panoramic windows. Because we were staying for 6 nights, we got the room for 20 GPB less per night, which was very nice. When we first entered the room, we were a bit disapponted, because the windows are made of plastic and therefore quite scratched. And there was no possibility to open a window in the room (only in bathroom).Overall you can say that this hotel has definitly seen better times - BUT:
Everything you need and expect from a 4 * Hotel was there. The bathroom equipment was quite new, the matress was good, the room was spacious, there were blinds and curtains at the windows and of course the room was clean. Breakfast was okay, cooked breakfast was - of course - the Scottish way. Some reviewers criticized the price, but after reading reviews about an other hotel in Ullapool where you pay 110 GPB for a doubleroom with a shared shower we think the Royal Hotel prices are fair. The hotel staff overall was friendly and helpfull.

Friendly welcome, very clean, very spacious rooms (we got the 4 poster upgrade with stunning views). It is a shared balcony incidentally!
We ate in the restaurant and the food was good, perhaps a bit pricey but good nonetheless.
Very pleased with our stay.

A clean and fuss-free hotel. We stayed one night in what has to be the best room in the place - four poster bed, large room with fantastic view over Loch Broom and access to the balcony (which neighbouring rooms can also access). Hotel has wifi which is great and decent choice for breakfast, slightly greasy-spoon style full Scottish Breakfast, but others would say hearty. There are healthy choices too of course. Good shower, and curtains which are important to keep out light early in the summer mornings!
Get the impression this place is busy with touring coach loads, but this didn't really affect us in any way with regards to noise levels, etc. Would consider a local B&B next time because of price, but definitely nothing wrong otherwise.

Cunningly hidden behind a petrol station (and very easy to miss) the hotel is a short walk from the ferry terminal and Ullapool’s small collection of shops and banks. Bedrooms disappoint. A plastic sheet on the mattress rustles unpleasantly every time you move on the bed. Rooms are underfurnished; there are not even any hooks from which to hang a wet coat; a distinct issue in Scotland. A double room has only one small uncomfortable steel-framed chair and one even more uncomfortable steel-framed stool; exactly how are two people expected to sit comfortably on those? Cheap unlined curtains allow the light to stream in as soon as the sun rises; about 3 a.m. in summer at this latitude. Neither radio nor alarm clock is supplied. Rooms at the front enjoy a fine view across the loch but a balcony runs along the entire frontage of the hotel in front of the bedrooms, which allows every Tom, Dick and Harry to walk by and look in the room; a feature I did not appreciate at all. These failings might be expected is this was a cheap hotel but the exact opposite is the case; this hotel is markedly more expensive than comparable provincial hotels elsewhere in Scotland whilst offering fewer and lower quality benefits.

The restaurant seems to suffer from a degree of ethnic confusion; the menu affects to be Italian, food is served on platters with what appear to be Chinese lettering and most of the waiters are east European. The food is relatively simple and portions large.

A plus point is awarded for the car park in which spaces are sufficiently wide to both park a car and get out of it without banging the door into the next car (or, more importantly, having the doors of the next car banged into yours). I wish all car parks were as accommodating

We were waiting for the ferry across to the Isle of Harris, and checked into this hotel, which is large, no personality and souless.

We went down to dinner that night, took one look at the menu and decided to eat further down in the Village (we ended up at the Fisherman's Inn which was lovely with very good food). We spoke to other people who had eaten in the restaurant and said it was awful, so we were glad we had avoided it.

The room was large and very clean, with great views from our balcony, and breakfast was lovely with plenty of choice and very pleasant staff.

Not complaints as such, just a bit big and souless to be honest.
