“Mediocre "resort" in a great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

After reading several months' worth of reviews on this "resort", I have to say I agree with many of the opinions with respect to the lack of variety of the food, the disinterested staff, the inconsistent maid service and rather expensive wifi ($16 per day). Despite the fact that we tipped $3 to $5 each time we ordered 2 drinks at the pool or lobby bar or had a buffet breakfast where we were served an occasional glass of water, service wasn't particularly pleasant. The Point restaurant, which is supposed to be a fine dining experience, was not open most evenings, but when it was, we enjoyed a better than average meal from a very limited menu. Our waiter, Martiko, was by far the friendliest and most personable member of the staff...we wish we would have seen him more often during our stay. Most of the other waitstaff were absolutely miserable, even the ones who saw us daily and were greeted warmly by us. There were some practices that I noticed that could possibly contribute to vacationers getting sick or grossed out;, namely, leaving a small pitcher of creamer at each table in the heat for hours each morning during breakfast, food left out for hours without being covered, and the flea-infested cats roaming around begging for food at the restaurants. There were some positive aspects of the hotel that were impressive, though; when it rained, the front desk supplied us with umbrellas to get to the restaurants without getting soaked. I think this hotel is a great option if you are not concerned about luxury accommodations and plan on venturing out to see the beauty of this island. You probably will not find a better area in St. Maarten that combines a vibrant nightlife where one can walk around safely, along with a central location where you're not too far from any major attractions (Simpson Bay, Philipsburg, Mullet Bay). The Sunset Beach Bar is a short walk away where you can enjoy watching the planes land overhead, decent food, and reasonably priced drinks. There are a number of bars and fun places to visit at night nearby, like Sopranos piano bar, Cheri's Cafe, and Bliss nightclub. The hotel offers a free shopping excursion into Philipsburg hosted by one of the owners of a jewelry store in town. You may be better off taking a $2.00 bus ride on your own into Philipsburg so that you can shop at your leisure, but the free shopping excursion may come in handy if you have intentions of buying jewelry. We had lunch and drinks at the sister property on Great Bay beach. The food was equally limited, the bartender at the pool bar was grouchy even though we tipped him generously and others did not, and the hotel itself was in dire need of renovation.
The Sonesta Maho is kept fairly clean, and I did appreciate that the insecticide they spray several times a week was an all natural blend of lavender and non-toxic herbs, but it falls short of the kind of resort that could be put in it's place. The island has so many great restaurants and fun beaches to explore that it would be a shame to spend a week just hanging out at this hotel. If you are going to St. Maarten with the intention of exploring the island and need reasonably priced lodging in a great area, the Sonesta Maho is a good option.

We went to Sonesta through a Groupon Getaway and had a great time. We did the all inclusive package and we ate at the restaurants almost every meal. The last night we were there (Wednesday) the Ocean Terrace restaurant held a large outdoor BBQ which was different and fun! No complaints over the food except that we never were able to try the Point because every night we tried they were closed for a private function.

The first few days we hung out by the pool which was definitely entertaining as the staff would hold various activities throughout the day. A few days into our trip we heard that there was a beach within walking distance called Mullet Bay. We went and loved it! It was perfect, not too over crowded and the rentals for beach chairs and umbrellas was cheap. It also never got crowded (we went the first week of May). It was gorgeous.

I really enjoyed staying at Sonesta in Maho because there were restaurants, beaches, and other activities to do close by (Cheri's Bar right across the street which I highly suggest). The staff was incredibly helpful- especially Yeimy at the front desk!

Stayed as an All Inclusive package for 3 nights from June 19 -22, on the 7th floor. Great view of the ocean and Maho beach.
A little unsettling at first being so close to the airport with the noise from arriving aircraft but flights seem to terminate by early evening.
Room was clean and comfortable and cleaned daily. There was a room safe, iron and board, blow dryer, coffee maker and stocked mini refrigerator. There were packets of coffee but strangely no tea bags. The mini bar had beer, soda and bottled water...other resorts we’ve stayed at you paid for water and mini bar is free to All Inclusive guests and replenished daily. Room safe failed to open on the second day, security had to come to the room to get it open. Although it was supposed to have been repaired I never used it again.
Pools are large enough for swimming and were never overly crowded. The main pool is the busiest with its swim up bar. Shout out to Sheryl at the pool bar, she was the only bartender to mix a decent cocktail.
Maho beach is not very long and can get crowded. The water was somewhat rough with breakers near to the shore. No lifeguards on duty.
Of the four bars I tried only the pool bar, see above, mixed a decent cocktail. Have Sheryl mix you a BBC and then compare it to the other bars. If you like your drinks straight, then no problem, any of the bars will do. Alcoholic drink servings were generous.
Front desk staff and housekeeping were very attentive. Restaurant servers seem to be overwhelmed with the volume of guests. The first evening we had to wait for cutlery to be placed on the table. In fairness it got somewhat better after that, although there were still waits for water or coffee.
Food, something close to my heart. All meals were buffet style which is par for the course, with a snack bar for a lighter lunch. While there was variety, I found the dishes to be below par compared to other resorts that I’ve stayed at. The pork was over done especially the ribs. The beef roast was also a little too well done. Bacon was fried to a crisp and oily, a lot of other dishes were also too oily for my taste. There was actually fruit available, while it lasted, especially bananas which seem to be in short supply in other Caribbean resorts. There was just something missing in their dishes and with a few exceptions I did not enjoy most of the fare but that’s just my opinion. Desserts were fine but it would be a diabetic’s nightmare.
On Friday, the last night of our stay, we had been informed that the "theme" restaurant the Point would be open and to get there early for seating. We dressed appropriately and got there early, eagerly looking forward to a last night of "fine" dining, only to find that the opening had been cancelled. Rumor has it the chef didn't report to work. A big disappointment as the ladies had dressed for the occasion.
There is a gaming bar in the main lobby with a few slot machines. Across the street is the casino and a shopping strip with a few stores on the road outside of the hotel. The prices are pretty much the same as downtown and you can always negotiate the prices. A “bus” to Philipsburg is USD2 and you can get one out front of the hotel. Alcohol and cigarettes are really cheap. Didn’t particularly find there were any substantial savings on other items.
WIFI is not free and none of our group was able to connect to any local provider, so we were in effect at the mercy of the hotel for any telephone calls. Calls from the hotel local or long distance cost USD 1.50/minute.
I had no major problems with the hotel but found it generally to be under par to others I’ve stayed at, especially in the food and drink department.
Can’t say that the Sonesta impressed me enough to want to return for a longer stay.

The good: The updated "premier" rooms are great and they offer great views on the upper floors (island or ocean view). Housekeeping staff was friendly and did a great job. Complimentary drinks are re-stocked in mini-fridge every day. Front desk staff was amazing, especially Kevin who helped us with a room fiasco our first day and found an upgraded room for us last minute. Games are available in lobby. Pool was very nice and ramp leads you down to the beach, which had lounge chairs and umbrellas. View of planes coming in was very cool to watch. Food was good, but a bit repetitive.

The (very) bad: Wait staff at bars and restaurants were HORRIBLE! I don't know why so many of the recent reviews say other wise, but waiters rolled their eyes at us when we asked for a soda with our meal, almost always took at least 10 minutes to give us water, and could care less about us when there were locals eating around us. Rudest servers I have ever encountered! The ocean tower with the older rooms looks like something out of a horror movie. Elevators were broken when we arrived, pipes were coming out of the hallway walls, and the initial room we were in looked like a seedy motel room (it was hard to believe that the girl who checked us in called it a "nice room"). Also, power went out twice during our stay.

Overall, I don't think we will come back to the resort if we visit St. Maarten again.

Room Tip: Get a premier room in the main tower.

We choose this resort for 1 reason and that was how close we were to the beach near the airport where you can get jet blasted. We were very pleased with our room every room has a outside view with a balcony we were on the 8th floor and had a view of Mullet Bay. The pool bar was great and relaxing an all inclusive resort it was worth the price and would definitely be returning. Our son on the flight home asked when are we going back.

Room Tip: I feel it does not matter what room you get your there for the Isand life.

The maids did not clean our room very good leaving food on the table for 3 days before I threw it out. They allow smoking in the elevators. The service at the all inclusive restaurants is very slow and that's when the restaurants decide to open for the evening. The food is better elsewhere. The drinks are weak. The building is a hotel first with some frills added to it. If you want to go try the other hotel you have to spend money to get there. No shuttles available. Next time I go it'll be at a locally owned small hotel where they care about their customers.

My husband and I just returned from the Sonesta and I had to write. Everyone, guests and staff, were so friendly! We had needed to recharge our batteries, and we did just that. The garden view room was dissapointing as it looked over a roof and not a garden, but the room itself was comfortable. One complaint was that the drawers to put your clothes in smelled like BBQ! I couldn't use them! I used the big one under the luggage rack and it was fine. Housekeeping did a fine job of cleaning but they would forget all the towels and to restock the mini-refrigerator. They couldn't have been nicer, though. We LOVED the pool and the swim-up bar and sweet Cheryl, the bartender. That girl worked her tail off all day concocting tropical drinks and chatting with everyone. The food was very good in the Ocean Terrace. The menu at the Point was very disappointing and the Ascot was NOT an Irish pub...more like a TGIFs. It was still fun, though. We were just hoping for a different atmosphere. Overall, a fun place! PS. This place has THE VIEW of the planes landing at the airport as seen on YouTube. Fun!

Room Tip: Ask for an Ocean view.
