“Average hotel in a beautiful location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

Stayed at Sonesta Maho, hotel was average, service average, location excellent. Beach was great (5 minute walk), watch the planes come in and go out, some snorkling, beautiful crystal clear water. Mullet beach is within walking distance (15 minutes), one of the best beaches in St. Martin. Had trouble with the internet the entire stay. Breakfast buffet food was o'k, however a fight every morning to get a knife and fork to be able to eat. On several occasions asked staff for cutlery, it was like it was not their job. Food at the beach cafe was good (crab cakes and jerk burger were very good), service o'k. Ramone at the bar was always smiling and happy to be there, same could not be said for most of the rest of the staff. Sports bar was o'k, only one bartender made service slow, same for main lobby bar. Room itself was o'k, no hot water on Saturday mornings.

Located next to airport and airport beach- great views, decent beach. Plenty of choices for food, drink, casino and some shops. Buses take you into Philipsburg for $2.
Checkin was a little slow, asked for an updated room but hotel was sold out so got stuck with older room. Bathroom very old, shower about 5 feet tall, weak water pressure and alternated warm and cold. Bed was fine. Internet was $16/day and very slow, almost unusable.
Pools were nice- mostly older crowd.
Lobby is average, but pool table, ping-pong plus areas to lounge and play cards.
Breakfast buffet was poor quality and very crowded.
Check out the many good restaurants within walking distance- Bijatzu for steak and seafood, Pizza Pasta for Italian, Cherrie's for lunch. Boat bar is small with great views of beach and airplanes, Sunset Beach bar is touristy but a must see. Bliss looked like a fun beach bar/nightclub, Sopranos was a fun piano bar, and bar above it on the roof was very cool.
Casino was more Reno than Vegas with emotionless dealers.

Room Tip: Ask for updated room facing pool.

Ok overall we were pleased - except for the beach right at the resort - rough waters for some - however a walk 10 mins from the resort was a beach that I thought was out of this world.
No words to describe it - simply crystal clear waters any one can just stand in and look through.
The resort should provide a shuttle. As for all inclusive we always keep aside a few dollars for tipping morning noon night and it does wonders. We have no problem tipping and we get that extra touch or shall I say plus service - we had luck at the small casino on premise and at the bigger casino across the street. We were pleased with our rooms. My brother in law on the departure date in the morning won a large sum but there is no cashing at the hotel itself and the casino across the street which is tied to the one on premise was not open yet - fortunately my brother in law saw a casino employee who did a favour and opened the casino just for him to cash out- he did give a good tip to the casino employee . The hotel should have an arrangement to be able to cash out winnings that occur at the hotel. There are local buses one can take and go to Philipsburg which we took in couple of times - we also went 1 day by ferry to Anguila a truly paradise island and spent a day - but I was terrified of the ferry ride - it was so rough I was preparing for the worse. Visit though was more than worth it. And sure do enjoy the nude beach there. The best waters I have seen and been in - in a long time. As for plane landing so close to the resort we and other tourists actually enjoyed it. There were also a few other casinos at walking distance from the hotel. And it seems like all these casinos turned out to be lucky.
Then there is Orient Beach which was also truly worth the visit.. There will always be visitors complaining there is not enough variety of food but just how much can one eat - anyways if there is a problem tell the staff manager or the lead chef and things are fixed rightaway- again no matter what island we visit , no matter what other place we have travelled to a fair tip will do the trick. And that's not a big deal to us - even when we go all inclusive. Let me conclude that we enjoyed St.Martin - it is worthy of visit - nevertheless we went to Aruba in 2011 and Occidental Grand is where we stayed - and that is worth every dollar. Just stay away from those green pests-iguanas - entertainment etc. was superb there - not much entertainment at Sonesta - and although it has a sister hotel in Philipsburg - that would be too far from the airport - so we were glad we chose this very close to the airport- the airport is also truly ncice.

Room Tip: we always go for Oceanview rooms or if we choose a lower category we ask to upgrade for free or when...

the hotel was very pretty and well kept. Food and beverage services were wonderful. If you are looking for a beach experience this is not the place beach was not accessable and was very rocky. The only other draw back was that the property was close to the air port and it was noisey when the planes were taking off and landing

Spent a day in St. Maarten before a trip to Anguilla, the main reason was to see the planes come into Maho Beach. The room was dated, but clean. The resort was big and I had to lug my own bags. I asked for an oceanfront room at check in and it was "No Problem, Mon!"

Spent the next AM on my balcony watching smaller planes come in before heading down to the beach for the big birds in the afternoon.

Where to begin?
Things looked great as we checked in. An older hotel that appeared to be well maintained. However the longer we stayed the more issues that came up.
I am not going to go on and on about some minor issues, just the big ones.
We were part of a large group that chose the all inclusive package.
Food service - Not enough plates , cutlery, glassware to service the guests they had. Breakfast pancakes, french toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, etc were luke warm at best and cold most of the time. The staff were getting frustrated because they were not given the tools needed by their management to provide their clients with a nice experience. Remember, the people that live and work on ST Maarten are Fabulous, kind people who will do anything to make your stay enjoyable. It was hard to watch!
One night they also had a beach BBQ night. WHen we went down to eat you could not see what they were serving because of the lack of lighting, we waited for plates and cutlery for 20 minutes. Then the chicken and ribs were cold and quite disgusting. The other thing about dinners is they always served pork ribs and chicken thighs- could they not serve a higher quality meat option?
Quite a few of our group got sick the third day in. We were lucky because we went on several excursions so had many meals away from the property. Everyone blamed the food. Keep the hot food hot and the cold food cold we always say- something Sonesta Maho should take to heart.
The hot water system broke down on our last morning there- quite the finish to a holiday! 200 people leaving on planes back home- 14 hours of flights for some and no showers!
Clearly the Management of this property is at fault and needs to figure out what experiences they want their guests to have. After they figure it out i hope that they will put plans into place so future guests will have great holidays.
Maybe they can start by buying enough plates, glasses and utensils to serve the guests the property can hold. Then they could hire enough staff to serve hot coffee and work their restaurants. Also, buying some lighting so guests can see what they are eating would help.
I will not be recommending this property to anyone i know, in fact, just the opposite.

Every time I pass through St Martin we seem to get stuck, this is the second hotel and both hotels were awful. First of all you will get no rest, or good food near this hotel. The night club a couple doors down is so loud, all you can hear is a thumping base all night long. Even though the hotel seemed empty they claimed no other rooms were available. The worst part of all is the pillow smelled like dirty hair!

NASTY!

Room Tip: I would not recommend this hotel!
