“Nice place to stay for the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

We stayed here over new years eve 2012 and it's our 2nd time here. They have made very nice improvements to the food and accommodations. The New Years celebration was wonderful. Very nice location, close to everything. My kids loved the pool and the nearby beach. If there is one thing I could change, it would be to improve the water pressure in the rooms as the showers are just over a trickle and the sink faucet water never adjusted the water temperature.
Fun activities, nice deal for an all inclusive.

We found the service and the food to be very good. The main pool was great fun, as was the swim-up pool (very friendly bartenders there!). Spa was excellent... they are perfectionists there! Rooms were nice inside, but your view depends a great deal on which room you have. We happened to have a room on the island side 4th floor. Our view, of the roof of the conference center (complete with piles of sand and junk), was such that we never wanted to open our curtains. The sewage problem, which several reviews mention, is definitely a problem, depending on where you sit around the pool and which way the wind is blowing. The smell of smoke throughout the lobby and hallways is also bad. But the worst part is the sound of the Casino across the street... the music screamed until 3:00 a.m. every night, and it sounded like it was right outside our window. Might be fun for college students who are up until then anyway, but for anyone else, it was a major problem. Can't understand why the hotels in this area don't protest... won't be staying here again.

Thanks to some reviews we had read on tripadvisor, we chose to upgrade to a new room in the main building (6th floor facing the ocean). Our view was gorgeous and we never had any problems with smells, construction, or anything outside the hotel which was a relief. The room was updated and we only had a few minor complaints which were easily fixed (eg not enough towels).

We absolutely loved the all-inclusive option and this made for a really relaxing stay here. It was so nice to not have to worry about opening our wallets and buying overpriced food. Breakfast buffet was more than appropriate and we really liked the outdoor seating area looking at the water. Service isn't spectacular but it's not awful either. Make sure you leave a few dollars for a tip and you will get better service for your stay. We went to the Palms Grill every day for lunch and loved it. The burgers, Caesar salads, crab cakes, and desserts were all very good. We loved the frozen drinks as well.

I was really, really disappointed on our first day when I saw the man-made beach area--we got there at about 3 pm and had to sit on the upper level man-made beach. The sand was gritty and the area is small and crowded. HOWEVER, the next morning, we went to the natural beach and easily got chairs and umbrellas. Apparently people have plenty of places to go during the day so the beach doesn't get crowded at all. We were even able to find space when we got there later in the afternoon! We spent 4 solid days at the beach and LOVED it!!! So relaxing, the sand is very soft, and the water is clear and the perfect temperature with fun waves. Can't say enough great things about the beach. Although the water comes up pretty high at times, we put our backpack on the back of the chair so it didn't get wet and we had no issues. The beach is the most important thing to me on a vacation and I was extremely happy here. Don't let the man-made beach discourage you!

We had dinner at the buffet and at the Point, both of which were very good. Compared to the food we had at an all-inclusive in the Dominican Republic, the food here is wonderful. We like nice restaurants and were overall very satisfied with the food here. We were horrified to have MUCH worse food in the Dominican so we were just thrilled with the food at Sonesta.

We never used the pools because we were at the beach so much. I would recommend getting a car at least one day and exploring the island. Hertz car rental is right in the Sonesta lobby--ask for Chris and he will make it happen. Ask the concierge which beach to go to--Waikiki beach (think that's the name) at Orient bay was really expensive and a tourist trap. It's beautiful but pretty breezy and I had more fun in Maho! However--don't feel like you need to spend any time seeing Philipsburg. Unless you're in the market for alcohol or jewelry, you won't find much. It's touristy (overpriced) and not nice to see whatsoever. I was totally unimpressed with Sonesta Great Bay as well. We liked Marigot, Orient bay, pic paradis, and the whole french side in general.

All in all, we absolutely loved our vacation here and can't wait to go back. We appreciate nicer food and accommodations and learned to love this hotel. Maho looks a little dingy when you first arrive, but don't let that fool you.

Room Tip: 690 is a new room and we had no complaints.

This was our first trip to St. Martin...went to the Sonesta Maho on the advice of a travel agent from Christmas Eve to New Year's Eve. The food was good, especially liked the breakfast buffet.
The staff was friendly, but respect the custom to greet them and treat them respectfully.
As others have stated the beach is small to non-existent but you can walk to the nearby Mullet Beach so it wasn't the worst. The pools were clean but people tended to hold the chairs early and close others out. The room was clean the air conditioning worked well but the room is in need of a makeover, bathroom is really outdated. There are some updated rooms in the tower, but the view from the lower unit is spectacular. The rooms are pretty sound proof and the planes don't fly late at night so it wasn't too much of an issue. It wasn't a 5 star hotel, but the value was good and we really enjoyed our stay there.

Room Tip: if you want a view, stay in the lower unit...tends to have the best views. If you want updated, ask...

Visited this property December 24-29th. This is my fourth stay here over the years, but the first as all inclusive. Through a "Black Friday" special, we were able to get the room more cheaply at an all inclusive rate, so it was a no brainier.

We booked a premium island view room in the Sky Tower which is the main building. The rooms are clean and adequate to meet your needs. The non-premier rooms (lower priced) are in the low rise section. Very dated and would not recommend.

The good: The hotel is a large resort with 2 pools and 3 dining options. The island has many, many fine dining options, so we did go out at night. We ate dinner there one night at The Point (their all inclusive a la carte) and it was fairly good with a great view. Buffet and Grill were both fine for breakfast and lunch. I have read reviews where people complained about the food, but there was something to satisfy everyone. Bar drinks were decent with name brand alcohol being served.
Located on the Dutch side and close to the airport. It is located in the center of a little area containing shops, restaurants, and a casino. The large pool had activities going on, if that is your thing and the other pool was quiet and more adult oriented.

The bad: Many reviwers have complained about the front desk and I'd have to agree there are some bad apples behind the desk. Not all, but they definitely need to brush up on customer service 101! After checking in, we realized our safe had no lock. we called down and were told a digital safe should have been in the room and would be delivered in 45 minutes. 3 hours later (after carting our cash/passports/iPad, etc) around we inquired at he front desk and were told they were out of locks! Really, cause we were told we were getting a digital safe. No response to that, but told locks were not complimentary and to check back tomorrow. That's not what they advertise and when we went back to the room someone was putting in a digital safe after my complaining.
They have refurbished their bathrooms with half-glass walls and rainhead shower which leaks on to the bathroom floor. They apparently know this is a problem, since they have put in a wood strip between the shower and bathroom tile, but it overflows anyway into another drain in the middle of the bathroom floor. They are stingy with towels, which you will be using to mop up after your shower. I truly feel sorry for their maids.

The grounds are well maintained and their were plenty of lounge chairs. Since my last stay, the beach has eroded to where you cannot lay out on it, but above it. If you are a diehard beach person, you'll be disappointed. Mullet Bay Beach is a short walk away and that is nice and close by. It is easy to get around by car- we rented one from BestDeal and I would recommend.
Lots of beaches and plenty to see.

It's not The Ritz, but no Motel 6 either. Think 31/2 star and you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Premiere tower rooms are much better. Island view overlooks the strip, so you may hear a little nois...

I stayed at this resort in the first half of December, at the end of my wonderful holiday in St. Martin, where I had the pleasure to visit some friends.
I choose this hotel thanks to what looked like a very good offer (called "black Friday sale") but I was very disappointed with my (luckyly) short stay there.
- Old style building, in need of major refurbishments, with bad smell all around the property;
- it's called a beach resort, but actually the beach is a very small strip of sand next to the airport, definitely not enough for more than 500 rooms;
- I booked a standard room in the main "Tower" building (i think they call it "superior") and I was aware that it was without sea view, for which I didnt' care. The issue is that their standard rooms actually are ...facing a factory, active 24 hours with a terrible noise that make impossible to sleep; I complained at the reception and they moved me to another room a little bit farther away (always facing the factory and with the horrible noise). Total lack of guest service and attitude by nearly all the staff working at the hotel
The only respectable area is what they call the "Ocean" terrace where there is a more quite swimming pool and you can tell that it has been built a little bit later.
I strongly suggest You to avoid it and look for an alternative accomodation on the island.

Room Tip: If you really don't have other alternatives on the island, choose a room with sea view, perhaps...

There is a huge above ground open septic tank behind the resort which you can smell most of the time. But even if the wind isn't blowing, the brown water in your toilet is a solid reminder. The hotel is just tired and needs a major renovation

Big turn off - No Beach
