“Pity”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

Why did I write 'pity'. The Bladnoch Inn is a cosy place to dine and close to home which is good.

This is the first time in quite a while that we have chosen to go to Bladnoch for the Sunday Carvery. On two previous occasions we were disappointed mainly due to the food you help yourself too being only slightly warm. We gave it the benefit of the doubt today but sadly nothing has changed.

Choice of roast beef, pork, ham and chicken to pick from. The meat was nice and tender and tasty.

There was a great selection of vegetables ........ Sprouts, cauliflower with cheese sauce, mashed potatoes, green stick beans, carrots, roast potatoes, plus Yorkshire pudding and gravy. It was ALL LUKEWARM. My thinking is you should go at the start time of the Carvery or around 1 o'clock when there's a possibility that the containers for the vegetables etc have been topped up with hot food. At £9.50 a head the standard should be maintained all the time. (I have sent food to the kitchen before to be reheated in the microwave).

At no point did any of the staff come to ask if everything was ok for us.

The white wine and the bottle of beer were not chilled.

On the plus side the bar had a roaring fire and it was a comfortable place to dine just a pity about the cool food.

Don't think we will be going back there again.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2012

We ate at The Bladnoch Inn, after having the restaurant recommended by fellow guests, where we were staying locally. The restaurant itself is lovely, a very homely "bistro" atmosphere.

We ordered a sirloin steak meal, one steak medium rare and one medium well done. Both arrived without too much delay. The medium rare steak was only cooked about half way along the meat, with the remainder completely raw and inedible. Mushrooms were coated in breadcrumbs and clearly out of a freezer bag, with chips obviously frozen and not freshly prepared and handcut. There was a zigzag drizzle of balsamic dressing across the plate, for no apparent reason.

We were asked why the steak had been left and explained that it was raw, to be told by the waitress that it did look uncooked. End of.

We were asked if we would like to see the desserts menu ..... no thank you! We paid out bill and left. We will not be making a return visit.

Went one evening and although it was too busy for us to eat in the restaurant, we had our meal in the bar area and it was to a great quality. I had cajun chicken and my partner had sausages and mash. The portions are huge so it is really great value for money.

Do not go here for food, much better can be found elsewhere in the local area, tourist trap because it is next door to the distillery. Chicken burger ordered (we don't expect much) but one Birdseye crispy chicken slice is a disgrace considering your paying £9 for the pleasure of it. Other meals ordered were of a similar standard and price. Everything is straight out if the freezer and made by Birdseye or McCain (don't mind this at home but not when eating out!). Don't go, plenty of other choices locally!

We ate evening meals here three times in five days, booking is useful if you decide to go back as it is so popular with the local clientele that it can get full on Fridays and weekends. There is a good choice on the printed menu, as well as specials on the blackboard. The emphasis is on good food with local ingredients, made freshly on the premises, at reasonable prices (our meals with a half-pint drink each and tips but without puddings came to about £26 for two). The tables are old oak, you can eat in the bar or in the restaurant (which has candles or a flower on the table) and the atmosphere is friendly. It is now a fine dining place, no linen tablecloths, but has good, tasty, honest local food. Thoroughly recommended, best by far of the places we ate in.

Room Tip: We ate, we didn't stay - booking recommended at peak periods.
