This is a wonderfully luxurious hotel with gorgeous grounds and outstanding food.
So why not 5*. They lost 2* for the following reasons:
1. Safety concerns. Despite having locked my door, one of the other guests was able to unlock my door with HER key. She had gotten the rooms mixed up. However, it made me concerned that each room's lock and key were not truly unique, allowing anyone with any hotel room key to enter any room. When I called the front desk about my concerns about the lock and concerns about safety (I was truly scared), my concerns were brushed aside with "there's nothing we can do about it (lock and key situation)" and "it's very safe here, you have nothing to worry about".
2. Use of dynamic currency conversion (DCC). This is a practise where the merchant converts the bill from the local currency into the currency of the credit card owner's home country using a highly unfavorable conversion rate. In this case, it was 10 cents over the official conversion rate (they used $1.94 instead of $1.84 to 1 £).
When I was presented with the receipt to sign, I saw the conversion rate and below the signature line the statement "I accept the currency conversion rate used". I refused to sign since I was not given a choice nor did I accept the conversion rate used (VISA requires that merchants give the customer a choice between local currency and home currency for charges). I was then told that there was no choice and I could ONLY be billed in US $ (in Scotland!) and he couldn't void the transaction (!). I refused to sign, saying that I would only sign a slip billed in the legal tender of Scotland.
I asked for the manager and was told no manager yet. Because it was a relatively small charge, he voided the bill by giving me the amount in £ since he "couldn't" void my credit card charge that already went through.
The DCC is a way of overcharging the customer. You have a right to be charged in £. Just something to be aware of for visitors from outside the UK.
