“Did not live up to expectations”

Ballachulish House

We had a dissapointing stay due to the snobbish attitude by the owner who made our party feel most unwelcome. She felt we were too noisy but given that she had taken a booking for seven people, she should have expected a little noise with everybody chatting.

The hotel ran out of most drinks which we ordered including champagne and red wine which we did not believe was satisfactory for a hotel of this standing.

The rooms did not lock and we had to share a bathroom with people across the corridor. The bathroom was very small and not to the standard we would have expected.

The food, however, was excellent and if the service had been better and we had been made to feel more welcome, I would not be writing this review.

Glencoe was spectacular and I will be back there but unfortunately not to the the Ballachulish House Hotel.

Right from booking the room through to the welcome at reception and the service at dinner that staff at Ballachulish House were friendly and helpful. We stayed one night after a long trip round the coast to avoid a snow-blocked road. We instantly relaxed and travelled the short distance to the shared swimming pool and fitness centre in Glen Coe.
This would be my only gripe in that having arrived at 6pm there was no availability for the fitness area which was fully booked. The swimming pool was welcoming though and the sauna helped to ease the tensions of the day.
We enjoyed an excellent evening meal with local specialies which was good value I thought considering the quality and lovely surroundings. Then we relaxed with a drink in the lounge in the warm environment of candles and soft furnishings.

I had the pleasure of staying at Ballachulish House on my way back from Sky. Having read many of the reviews about the food etc I am happy to say it exceeded all of my expectations. The charm of the place, the furnishings and finally the cuisine were as good as I've ever had among the best places in Scotland. The dinner was off scale and Marie McLaughlin is truly an amazing host.

I think the US visitor is maybe to big to fit into a perfectly normal bathroom, fine for normal people !??? Utterly confused by the previous review .
We visited in December 2004. the welcome was excellent. The house ,built in 1640 an absolute period piece , restored sympathetically by the owners.
The views may be limited by window size, but the building is listed (historical protection) and the small 17th century windows can't be changed ,and the views were pretty stunning. The bathrooms are smallish, limited by the nature of the rooms in this old house, but they are fine and the bed was particularly comfortable, in a large airy room.
The food is on another level - it it absolutley outstanding , we had an excellent meal , served impecably . The lounge with its roaring fires and relaxing decor was a suberb place to relax pre and post dinner. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

We asked for the best room and required it to be quiet with a view. We also stipulated the bathroom was important to us and we wanted luxury. The price was 188 pounds a night(approximately $380.00 U.S.) Though the room was nice, it certainly was not worth the money. The room was worth 70-90 pounds in my opinion. The room was not quiet as it fronted the gravel drive way and car park, hence this was also the view, a small portion of the loch could be seen in the distance. One window was held open with a piece of wood. The other window could not be held opened as the brass fixtures to hold the window open had been stolen according to the properitor. The bathroom was tiny, two people could not be in it comfortably at the same time, the toilet was beside the bath. The bathroom fixtures were very cheap, the towels standard fare as were the bed linens. Two standard bed pillows. No luxury bedding. No television, radio, alarm clock or VCR. Furnishings looked tired with some cheap reproductions. 2004 edition of Johansens had quoted top price as 160 pounds and the 2004 Freedom of the Highlands (Scotland tourist board) 80 pounds as the top price. Overall, I believe it is not value for the money spent.
