“The former glory has wained to a joke”

the cobwebs on the lightshade were still there on my second visit. the staff speak in their native tongue (not english) and ignore you. the food is ok if it is just pub food you want. then menu never varies, the breakfast is the same every morning, the tv remote does not work, staff are seen to be playing on a laptop in the same room as guests are eating, the carpets are worn and manky, only one member of staff has a pleasant air, the rest could not care.
This was once a lovely, cosy, friendly place, no longer, avoid at all costs.

The faults mentioned elsewhere in reviews - variable staff, slightly unfinished appearance to some maintenance jobs - are probably true. For us these were outweighed by the pluses. This is a cosy, lively inn with a bar used by locals - not the sterile B&Bs that are easy to find. The food - dinner and breakfast - was good and the position is also good, near the harbour and with an interesting river and waterfall walk starting right outside. If you value a place with true atmosphere and good food and beer, you'll like the Old Inn. If the old bit of half finished decorating or peeling wallpaper (like on our ceiling) is the type of the thing that will wreck your stay, then maybe this is not for you.

Stayed for three nights in June 07.
Overall it was very good.
great location, very good food, staff varied from indifferent to very good.
arrived on a Saturday and initially told the dining room was fully booked and felt somewhat disappointed, however told later as we were guests we could book the dining room.
Saturday night they have a two for the price of one steak meal which we ordered, mine ok,wife had to return hers to the kitchen as it was to tough to eat, they were very good about it and it returned in a short while ok.
Accommodation was very good, very good hearty Scottish breakfast, excellent bar meals albeit a bit on the pricey side.
Good walks especially to the waterfalls did not use the car for the three days we stayed. Not much to see or do in the town of Gairloch
Overall very good and would definitely return

Day 3 of our Highland holiday+we find ourselves in Gairloch.A lovely little seaside town. The Old Inn is magnificent, from the location to the ambience to the beautiful bedroom with a Four Poster bed.Wish i'd taken a photo.Staff were great, food was excellent and a great selection of ales. Was a bit more expensive than other places we stayed but you could see why. Also a great buffet breakfast.TIP:If you can, take in Ullapool when travelling to Gairloch. It's a nice little Port+the drive down to Ullapool+then Gairloch is fabulous.

We recently stayed at the Old Inn as a result of favourable Tripadvisor reviews but were very disappointed. Our room was modified for wheel chair access (not necessary for us) and I despair for those who have to use this room. The windows were small and had obscure glass so no possibility of a view of even the car park, light bulbs were intended to be energy saving but made the room resemble a gloomy cave. We could not get warm enough but that may have been our inability to operate the heating controls. We booked a table at 8.00pm and on arrival at the restaurant were told, for no apparent reason, to wait outside. Nobody came near us so we just went in and sat down. Food was OK but not as good as expected from the many awards claimed. Next morning at breakfast my wife was old she could not have a boiled egg - only fried or poached were on the menu.

The staff seemed constantly harassed and under pressure. No smiles and no one asked if we were enjoying our stay/our food/our holiday.

Avoid!!
