Cuisines: Coffee Shop
Description: This cafe is recommended by Lonely Planet and could be fantastic. The view is good, The food looked good and some tasted good. I ma prompted ot review becase the service was very bad. The women in charge who I believe is the owner was one fo the grumpier people we met on a 5month tour of Europe. She was loudly critical of and to the young man working there, she was unwelcoming and ignored much of what we said to her. The coffee was ok but made with reluctance and an offhand attitude. We felt as if we were intruding in her space and a real nuisance -- at 11 am !!. We had driven out of the way to get to a place which we felt would be special place for a coffee. It was but in all the wrong ways. We are New Zealanders who do not normally complain but this place was worth complaining about.

“Pleasant enough, but a little expensive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013

We found the Mountain Coffee company to be a welcoming, pleasantly chaotic place. Staff seemed friendly and the coffees etc were very nice. Weren't blown away by the cakes and scones we had (with the exception of the Passion Cake which was very good), and thought the prices were on the steep side. Soup was nice. Did find the American wilderness theme a little out of place in an area of prime Scottish wilderness, but it was jolly enough. Would go back, but wouldn't bother with cake.

“Expensive”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

Just like the rest of the area, expensive. The women running the place started to shout at people because she didnt have change. Well get more when the bank is open, pretty basic stuff.

“Come for the bookshop, get your food to go”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

This place has an artsy, somewhat esoteric vibe to it, with philosophical quotes everywhere up to and including the loo. I really enjoyed the little bookshop, which offers some volumes with a local connection and generally a range of books that seems to focus on quality rather than best-sellers. I ended up buying several books, and the man at the cash register was courteous and accommodating.

As for the café part, we got our coffee and scones (one fruit, one cheese and herb) to go, so didn't experience any of the service issues others have mentioned on here. It's true that the scones are quite pricey, but the are also unconventional and huge. For us, they served as a proper lunch meal on the road.

Best hot chocolate around and we are experts! Amazing scones as well. So good my family insisted we returned the next day!

“Random but welcome”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013 via mobile

The last thing you expect is a quasi-American trading outpost/coffee shop packed to the brims with random nik naks. Attached to this is a book shop. A suitable destination should the weather quickly change. Service is ok if a little chaotic and pricing is a little more expensive than normal;this is the outer regions of Scotland so choice is limited and costs reflect this.

One thing that is a little disappointing. With the rich heritage Scotland has to offer you feel that something more traditional could have been managed. Faux American in one of the most beautiful places in Britain just seems a bit odd; New York bagels anyone???
