“Fantastic birthday dinner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

Had a lovely supper - champagne, lovely wine and truly delicious food - would really recommend it! It is a proper pub but with really beautiful selection of lovely local, seasonal food on a menu which changes regularly!

Would I go back - yes definitely at any opportunity - only v slight negative is that it is not cheap...

My boyfriend officially asked me out here so it will always be a bit special for that reason. However, if I took that out of the equation I would still find myself loving this place. Yes, it's expensive, but at the same time you would go back time and time again because the food is amazing, the pub is cosy and you really feel it worth while pushing your bank balance that bit further than it should be :-| Delicious local sausages for bar snacks it almost makes you too scared to eat them in case you're mistaken! We have been for a formal evening meal which was absolutely delicious and we've also had a 'bar snack' lunch there which again was delicious.

It's just a really great atmosphere with delicious food and an appeal which makes you go back for more whenever you're in the area.

The staff here could not have been more friendly or helpful, and the village makes a lovely setting for this hotel. We had a large room in the main hotel, and being on the front in an old building, there was traffic noise. There is ample safe parking round the back of the hotel. We felt the room, although large and clean, was a little overpriced, and in need of updating. We chose the restaurant, because it was a special occasion, but the bar area would certainly have been better. We found the food underwhelming and not very well presented - perhaps the main chef wasn't in, as most reviews have praised it highly. The breakfast was excellent.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back or in the courtyard will have no traffic noise

We try to visit the Blue Lion every year and have celebrated various birthdays and anniversaries here, including our 25th wedding anniversary. We've never been disappointed. The Blue Lion is a lovely mixture of boutique hotel and country pub with excellent rooms and food in a relaxed atmosphere where you are totally in touch with the history of the building. The village is picture postcard stuff and you can do some fantastic walks straight out of the pub without having to get the car out of the car park. We have always found the food to be excellent, with lots of choice and seasonal game. The courtyard rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable and the hospitality trays stocked with a good selection of teas. Bed linen and towels are good quality and I always have a great night's sleep. The breakfast menus is extensive, the produce again really good quality. We were certainly very well set up for a full day's walking. The Blue Lion continues to be one of our favourite places to stay

We were fortunate to have a quiet, large, courtyard room at The Blue Lion, which was delightful. We could not fault them on this or their breakfast, which was excellent. Dinner, by comparison, was a bit disappointing. It was still good but not of the same quality. For the record, if you are eating there please choose to eat in the bar rather than the restaurant because of the atmosphere, which is very congenial.

stayed for 1 night with husband as a birthday/anniversary treat. After working as a chef for years I wanted a cosy country pub atmosphere with romantic charm and good food. Well the Blue Lion definatly delivered and exceeded my expectations. Menu in restaurant was fantastic and the food delicious. Room was exceptional and service outstanding. Will definatly be returning as soon as I can.

Room Tip: Booked Room 3 and was a little worried about other reviews saying this room was noisy but we did not...

This was our fourth stay over the years (second this year!) and we rarely return to places. Comfortable bedroom, a warm welcome for us and the dog, and a great dinner served in the dining room. This lovely pub hotel in a beautiful village is well worth visiting.
