If you are used to Premier Inns etc the Black Swan is not for you. It's an old building and so expect creaky floorboards, uneven walls and other signs of age. If you can get your head past that (and clearly some reviewers on here cannot), then this is a lovely place to stay. Well kept ale, really good food with generous portions carefully prepared - I would highly recommend the Roe Deer and Wild Mushroom Stroganoff, very friendly service from all of the staff and nice, comfy beds are just some of the things you will enjoy. The owners have started a programme of refurbishment and are fully aware of what needs upgrading, so expect things to improve still further in the next few years. Apart from that, Middleham is a lovely place and a gateway town for Wensleydale walks and other attractions such as the Forbidden Corner (booking office across the road) and the Castle. It's also home to race horses aplenty and the place oozes unspoilt simple beauty. The KGB Deal we got with a free bottle of wine (Temperanillo) if you dine made this fabulous value. we will happily return though, with or without a deal - it worked for us.
