“New England? New decor please!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

This was a last minute booking, with the Premier Inn and others relatively nearby all booked up.

Upon arriving, the peeling external paint was an early warning, as was the dodgy looking car park at the side of the building, with handwritten signs. Thankfully the car was still there the following morning and all wheels intact etc.

Entering the hotel, it was clear that it was a characterful building, but the decor was quite oppressive and very old fashioned.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, so I set aside further concerns until we got to our room. Firstly I was a bit concerned that it was a flimsy Yale lock and it wouldn't take much to push the door in, but when we got inside, it was clear the room needed a refurbishment. The travel cot was nice and clean as was the bed linen for all of us. Nice big tv too to help keep the kids amused. The bathroom was in need of a total refurb with signs of damp behind the loo, but at least it was clean. A door lock might have been a nice idea!

My son's Z bed collapsed when we tried to move it and as we couldn't fix it, he slept on a slant all night. Us adults found that quite amusing.

Breakfast was a little weird as there was a large space and a few breakfasting families, but no-one said a word. A bit like a doctor's waiting room or perhaps a morgue. Music might be nice, even the awful panpipe variety - anything to lift the mood a little..

Breakfast was quite nice and the lady manning the restaurant was very attentive and friendly. The high chair they had was grubby, but thankfully we'd brought our own IKEA one so we used that instead.

All in all a tiny bit disappointing in terms of overall appearance, but the staff made it a bit more of a pleasurable stay. I can see that they tried their best in what must be challenging circumstances.

However, I would say if you have very high standards, stay in a different hotel.

Room Tip: I'm not sure that any of the rooms would be any better than the one we stayed in :-( Avoid ro...

Prior to arriving, we became worried after reading some absurd reviews, but this is a perfectly good hotel, with very obliging staff, good basic food and reasonably comfortable rooms.

The most impressive aspect was how the manager (Margaret) went out of her way to make us welcome, booked taxis for us and catered to our needs.

Situated in the town centre, but away from bars, the location is good - even if Boston itself is not. The room was pleasant and quite spacious, with a decent bathroom and facilities. Also, the Full-English breakfast was very nice, and prepared quickly.

The hotel is quite noisy at night however, but it was a Saturday. Also, the website states that the front desk is open 24-hours a day, which is not quite true (though there is a contactable person on site, and it's possible to arrange for someone to let you in if returning late.

Overall, we were pleasantly surprised, impressed with the staff and happy with the breakfast and dining-room service.

Held Wedding Reception in the dining room all went well. Room a little dated but if you use chair covers etc it transforms the room and it looks lovely. Food was good, nothing was too much trouble all staff helpful and friendly. Nice large bedroom with a proper cooked breakfast the next morning. Would definately use again.

We stayed in the family room which was perfect for us and our 2 young children as they has their own room. Yes this is a dated hotel but it is clean and the service is very good. Breakfast was also very good, no dry buffet but cooked to order.

We particularly like the character of the hotel and although yes it could do with some tlc in places as a whole it is a good hotel with very helpful staff. It is difficult for these types of hotel as the likes of Premier inn have upped their game over the last few years, and do offer more continuity but if your looking for something different then give this place a try.

Stayed here while on a charity cycle ride so needed good food and a comfortable bed which is exactly what I got. Yes the place is a little dated but it is clean and comfortable. All the staff were excellent and very welcoming. The food was great and overall I would say it was excellent value for money. I would stay here again.

A last minute booking so wasn't sure what to expect. Very pleasantly surprised. The member of staff who took my booking was very courteous and helpful. When I arrived there was plenty of available parking. Staff on duty were excellent, very friendly and accommodating. Room was clean and quite large. Ate in the restaurant and the food was superb, they have a new menu with plenty of choice. Highly recommend.
