1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

we booked for 3 nights over christmas whilst visiting our daughter and grandchildren in harwich.Asked to pay up front we were then given a key to the the first room which had a gale blowing through the rotted window cill , shown a second room, which on first sight looked o.k. discovered a broken shower head which when reported was told that it would be repaired the next day.on our return at 9.00 pm we found the door locked. After gaining entrance I was presented with another shower head which I was expected to replace myself.
dirty carpets, cracked linoleum, cobwebs, dirty cups and saucers , if not for clean bed linen and a comfortable bed (plus the fact that we wanted to have Chrismas with the family) I would have left.when we left at 9.00am in the morning all of the doors were locked and we had to look for someone to let us out
now I know why we were asked to pay up front,

Thank You Denis G for your comments on your stay
Denis stayed at the "Cliff" on 24 - 26 Dec three nights over Christmas when the Hotel was shut. on a bed only basis on the understanding that there was no food or service available.
therfore his room was not serviced in that period and the front door was locked for his security and of the staff member in attendance ( a means of escape in an emergency clearly signed )

Just what we were looking for. A reasonably priced hotel with a late bar to serve a cool beer after missing the ferry. The room was okay, especially for the price. I left my phone charger which they were kind enough to send home to me.

Stayed for 3 nights and had a large room with sea view, breakfasts freshly cooked and excellent. Lunch and dinner good value and quality. Bar prices reasonable. Staff friendly and helpful. The hotel is a little tired but the position is excellent and reasonably priced rooms. I would certainly stay there again. There is a very large carpark and also parking on the sea front.

Room Tip: Choose a sea view room

We had read a few reports, so I guess we were not expecting the 'Ritz'!

In fairness we only ate here as part of a wedding reception. It is a typical 'seaside hotel, on the sea front with views. Parking was a problem, certainly the early evening that we arrived.

The hotel has that old fashioned dated feel to it, tired and in need of TLC.

As part of our reception we had a carvery which comprised of beef and chicken, the usual added trimmings, with table platters of vegetables.

The food was adequate and well cooked, that is all I could say. As this was a wedding reception, I am not sure what a normal buffet would consist of.

I would not choose to rush back.

My wife and I stayed here 1 night. The room was very dirty, stains on carpets, cobwebs on walls and ceiling, hairs in the bed, furnishings insecure and cups and saucers hadnt been washed.
The bathroom was very speacious, thats was the only good point,,,,,,,,,,wallpaper peeling off the walls, shower curtain was orange, lampshade missing, shower head hook was broken.
Breakfast was awful,,,,,,,,,tepid tea and coffee, no milk or orange juice, and the fried breakfast was swimming in fat.
The hotel needs closing and a total revamp is required. DONT be fooled by the appearance of the outside of the hotel, as the inside tells a different story.

Room Tip: Dont have room 22 as this is very close to a door in the corridor that is constantly banging day and...

We have stayed at the Cliff Hotel for a few years, once a year when in the area, and it has gradually gone down hill. It is not always clean, the rooms are now very much in need of an update and the beds are very uncomfortable. The whole thing looks seedy and tired, and it is quite expensive for what you get as breakfast charge is not included. Breakfast is awful, and we now book the room without breakfast and go to a local cafe instead. The restaurant used to offer quite reasonable quality food, but that too (we noticed this year) has also deteriorated in quality and choice, and the whole place is full of workmen who stay there.
The only reason we go is because we are in the area annually and there isn't anywhere else that we can find!

My husband Adrian and i had another lovely stay at the Cliff Hotel at Harwich. We have stayed there for the last few years and love it when we return there. The staff are very friendly and helpful there and our room was lovely. It was nice and clean and had a lovely lacy four poster bed. From our bay windows we had a lovely view of the sea right from Dovercourt along the beach and round to Harwich and the also Felixstowe. I loved to see the little sailing boats and the Ferries going out i couldnt take my eyes off the lovely view. The beach i just across the road from the hotel which is so handy and the walk to Harwich along the seafront is lovely.I cant wait to stay there again we had a lovely break.

Room Tip: If you get a room at the front the sea view is so lovely.
