I had never heard of the Milsoms group of hotels and boy have I been missing out!!!! We stayed at The Pier hotel for just the one night with dinner bed and breakfast all included. The room was lovely everything you could possibly want. If you are expecting a 'Cornish' view then you will disappointed as the view is of the huge container ships coming and going but to be honest its really interesting to watch!! The evening meal was superb and the breakfast lovely, faultless infact as were the staff, nothing was too much trouble. The overall attention to detail was brilliant, from the gorgeous toiletries, the complimentary bottles of water and coke, the fresh milk and the breakfast orange juice in decanted personal bottles was second to none. We will definately be returning and will visit the other hotels from the group too. Dont miss out on a really great hotel!!!!!

My Wife and I booked a one night pre-cruise (Norway/Iceland)stay at The Pier. We arrived a bit early, and our bags were put in a room for safekeeping while we enjoyed a superb lunch on their outdoor patio.
Our room was on the top floor of the main building, and although there is no "lift", there weren't many stairs and we then were left with a great view out over the harbour. England had been experiencing a heat wave and the fan that was in our room was quite adequate to keep us comfortable. If there was any street noise, it was pretty quiet by 11pm and the fan evened out any sounds earlier than that anyways. In other words, we both had a great sleep.
We experienced a hotel staff that were very engaging, both with their time and their interest in us.
Our bartender, prior to supper, was quite interested in how my Wife liked her martinis done and did it exactly correct. We had a great visit during our excellent supper from the Head Chef, Tom.
Also, the following morning, our breakfast and server were very pleasant. It truly felt like a home
more than a hotel.
We hope to return next year to do another cruise (Baltic and St. Petersburg).
The part of town that the hotel is in is also good for walking and has a seaside walk and park.

Room Tip: we had room number 1-direct harbour view

A planned two day pre-cruise stay that started badly but ended well. In spite of an early booking complete with confirmation number, they claimed that they had no reservation for us, nor any room! It turned out that it was their error. They got us a room at the Lifehouse Spa and Hotel, a 25 pound cab ride each way, with nothing close by. This was an overpriced, not well-kept hotel. Not recommended! We later discovered there were B&B accommodations available in Harwich, but we were stuck. The second night we got a room at the Pier Hotel, which is pleasant and well located. I can recommend the Pier Hotel, but beware their front desk/administration

We stayed at this excellent hotel for a weekend at the beginning of July. From the moment of arrival we knew we were going to have a good time. The check-in was quick and efficient and very friendly and the room just lovely. The weather was good, which is alway an advantage, but even if it hadn't been it would have been a good weekend. We were staying there because we were going to the Hot Rod World Championships at Ipswich, as we do every year, and felt we could rely on the Milsom name to provide value for money - we were not disappointed. Although it was a bit of a journey to the Foxhall Staduim from Harwich, it was well worth it. The food was excellent, fine dining but with sensibly sized portions, and the wine choice was excellent. In fact after 2 nights we liked it so much we stayed a 3rd night so we could sample their very super seafood menu in the shape of their version of Fruits de Mer, which was just great. What a lovely place and with super staff. Met the Chef - absolutely brilliant. A hotel in a working port yet with a charm and excellence that many could learn from. We will return!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front. Great view.

Previously, when booking a hotel for one night pre-cruise, we have stayed in The Tower Hotel. This June, however, we decided to try something else and chose the Pier Hotel. We were not disappointed and will definitely stay there again.

We were given a room in the main building with view to the pier. It was on the top floor and quite a climb. Beware if you have mobility problems and try to book a room lower down. There is no lift because it is a listed building and the owners are not allowed to alter anything. Our suitcases were not a problem because two young and strong men cheerfully hauled them up the stairs for us.

Our room was very spacious and comfortable. We had everything we needed and, if there was something missing, it was a hand rail in the shower.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast was really nice. Here again, we could have hot or cold dishes and the waitresses couldn't do enough for us.

There is a wonderful looking restaurant on the first floor, as well as a Brasserie on the ground floor, but we were unable to try either because we were met by friends who took us to a restaurant of their choice nearby. Next time, we'd like to try the first floor restaurant.

The hotel actually consists of two buildings, the main, and a second attractive building next door.

To sum up, this is a very pleasant small hotel and we shall not hesitate to recommend it or reserve here again.

Room Tip: Rooms to the front of the hotel have interesting water views. Be aware that there is no lift if you...

I stayed one night prior to a cruise. The staff was very friendly and the room was large and comfortable. The restaurant looked excellent and I wish I had eaten there but I was meeting other cruise passengers at a different hotel for dinner. BUT be warned -- this is an old building and there is NO elevator - though my room was on what I would consider the third floor.
