“Pet friendly???”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

This hotel says it is pet friendly. However, no secure space for dogs to run off lead nor any poo bins available. Dogs only allowed in reception or bedroom, not the bar or lounge.
Swimming pool outdoor and unheated. Surrounding area was not clean leaves etc.

Kim K, Owner at Dower House Hotel, responded to this review, August 13, 2012
We do not often respond to Guest Reviews but on this occasion cannot leave this Review without our comments/response.
We do allow pets at our hotel (indeed we have our own dog) but as a general rule do not allow them in the public areas such as the bar, lounge or restaurant simply because on many occasions we have other guests staying who are either allergic to or nervous of animals or dogs. In the case of the dog belonging to this guest reviewer, within a very short time of its arrival the dog had had an accident on our Reception carpet. This was, its owner commented because it was a young dog which became very excited if other people said "hello" to it! And this same guest was expecting us to allow it access to our other public areas where other guests might well be saying "hello" to it? Indeed he enquired subsequently if the dog could be allowed into the breakfast room whilst they and all our other guests had breakfast. We're sorry, but this is just not on and we do not think it unreasonable to limit pets to guests rooms and the accessways leading to them, and the grounds of the hotel. On the subject of the grounds, we have just under 2 acres of walled gardens and whilst the entrance to the hotel is naturally open for guests coming and going there is plenty of safe space for dogs to run off lead. We do not have a dedicated dog bin but if this guest had asked about disposal of dog poo (which he did not) we would have told him where to put it.
The swimming pool. Yes it is outdoors and not at present heated - it is not dirty - it is very clean! The paving around the pool was treated with stone cleaner only a week or two before this guests arrival and is regularly swept. However, being an outdoor pool surrounded by trees leaves will inevitably be blown into the pool area and are periodically removed.

Went for an evening meal here as we were staying nearby. The food was great and the whitebait starter one of the best I have ever had. Most of us had lamb asthe main course and it was tender and delicious. Only small criticism was my cheese dessert which could have had a little more variety/imagination rath than standard cheeses. The service throughout the evening was impecable and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal at this delightful hotel.

Felt a bit fortunate to be able to find a Sunday night accommodation for one-night only for a family of 5 in Dorset at this time of year. (With all the rain and flooding, felt more fortunate we were even able to get there.) Allister and Kim were wonderful hosts. Had a wonderful stay in the family room (Room 7). Ample space, even with 3 twin-sized beds and a kind sized bed in the room. Beds were comfortable. Fantastic view out the windows to the countryside. Grounds at the hotel were perfect for the boys to get outside and burn off some leftover energy before dinner (we chose to eat out to make it easy to roam the beach after dinner.) Kim's dinner recommendations for Lyme Regis restaurants were very helpful. Full English breakfast in the AM was tasty and ample servings for three hungry and growing boys. Lyme Regis town centre easily accessible via a few miles drive down the road.

Room Tip: Room 7 for families.

Booked here at short notice and got the last “standard” bedroom. Initial impressions were less than perfect (but read on as things got better).

We arrived early to an empty rather bland reception area and saw a bell on the wall to ring for service.

Someone arrived quickly, and we were shown to room without any problem. When we asked about dinner we were asked had we booked? No we said … no one had said we had to book dinner in advance when we booked our room by phone directly with the hotel.

While I do not believe the restaurant was full it seems they want to know the number of guests eating in the restaurant a day in advance (we wondered if they close the restaurant on very quiet evenings?).

So we ate elsewhere that night. Returned to a room that was a little cramped overlooking a small (closed) swimming pool.

Nosing around next morning shows we may have been a little unfair with initial impressions. Breakfast was good. We nosed into some of the larger vacated rooms that seemed very pleasant. Talked to other guests, they had apparently had a good (booked) meal the previous evening. Asked about WiFi and were given the access code (but only works on some rooms, not ours). Hotel had nice atmosphere over breakfast when busy. There is a nice bar with wood burning stove (in winter) and patio looking out over the Devon hills.

Will return, but will ensure we have one of the larger rooms (with WiFi), and ask about the restaurant booking/costs, and sample evening menu before we arrive.

Suspect they have a good repeat business … a little more information for first time guests would help though!

Room Tip: Look at hotel website and ask for larger room.

Situated in the beautiful devonshire country side with amazing views! 3 miles away from River Cottage where we enjoyed a 2 course dinner. The owners of the hotel could not have been more helpful and the hotel itself was gorgeous. The bedrooms were immaculate and well decorated, the breakfast was lovely and all in all I could not fault a single thing during our 3 night stay. Perfect way to spend the jubilee!

Room Tip: Room 7 has stunning views and a lovely big comfy bed!

Found The dower House by chance, just driving by and was very pleased to have done so. A very friendly welcome, excellant breakfast and lovely view from our bedroom. We didn't eat in the evening but I'm sure the food would be just as good.

Room Tip: Our bedroom was at the back of the house overlooking the fields and garden.

We spent two seperate nights recently and especially enjoyed the second one when we spent a pleasant hour or so in the bar with the owners in front of the lovely fire. Romms were large and clean and very comfy
Both breakfasts were superb.
We ate out at the River Cottage Canteen and By the Bay in Lyme which was really good
