“Excellent little hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

We were a party of nine friends meeting for a weekend walking on Dartmoor. The welcome from Karen and her staff was warm, friendly, thoughtful and efficient. Our group was given the pleasant annexe of 8 rooms 20 metres down the road, which we had to ourselves. The standard of accommodation was 1st class, with real attention to details like wonderful bedding, soft towels and even a proper toothmug. The ambiance in the newly refurbished hotel was lovely, with a nice balance between clean modern colour scheme and old Devon wood. The food was good. They certainly know how to cook proper individual pies, or crispy duck, or starters like crispy squid with seschuan noodles, and the real ales and wine we consumed in great quatities were all good. The prices are extremely reasonable, given the quality. Moretonhampstead was very well situated for our days out walking on Dartmoor and is readily accessible to our friends who had travelled down the M5 into Devon. It's a bit of a gem, this place, and we're so glad we found it - with the help of Trip Advisor.

Thank you for your lovely review! It's nice to get a review about our Mews annex – it is a great facility for a group - as you discovered. We are ideally placed for exploring Dartmoor and, as you say, access is good. We do hope you will come and visit us again soon.

I spent a night here recently to break my journey at the start of a visit to Cornwall. What a terrific hotel this is! It is excellent value for money (I believe it's an AA 3 Star establishment). All the staff were charming and helpful. The reception/residents' lounge is delightful and I actually sat in it and read the newspaper after dinner, which is something I never normally do. My room was very nice with a comfortable bed and flat screen TV. The bathroom was functional but fine. There was a bath as well as a shower. The towel rail wasn't switched on and there was no grab rail in the bath, but these are minor gripes.

I ordered a hamburger for dinner and this was very good and plentiful. Breakfast was again functional. The buffet is basic but adequate. The cooked breakfast was delicious and there was just about enough of it to satisfy the appetite. Only one slice of toast was served but that was enough. I suspect the management is being careful not to waste food and money, which is to be expected in these stringent times.

The only downside is the lack of a car park. You have to park your car in the public car park down the road and pay for the privilege. Charges stop at 6 pm but begin again at 9 am the following morning, so you need to remind yourself to go and feed the meter at 9 o'clock or you might get a ticket from an over-zealous car park attendant.

I really enjoyed my stay here and look forward to returning. If you are a light sleeper it might be a good idea to ask for a room at the top of the building as it is old and some of the floorboards squeak.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor of the building if you are a light sleeper.

We decided quite late to have a break on Dartmoor and went on Easter Monday and came back on the Wednesday. We have dogs and the hotel treated them wonderfully - as well as us! We ate in the bar which was cosy and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We didn't actually visit the reception area apart from arrival and departure. The reception was within a lounge and was beautifully decorated and relaxing. Luckily, we had two sunny days on Dartmoor, so although incredibly chilly the skies were blue and dog walking was easy. I am not sure what we would have done if it was very wet. We kept the dogs in a crate overnight in our hotel room which was very spacious and we had chocolates on our pillow the first night. We stayed in room number 1 and it was very quiet. The bath was simply gorgeous! The meals were good value and very good quality. Mortonhampstead catered well for your needs with a Co-op, tea rooms, galleries and potteries etc. Very accessible to the moor. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it.

If you are looking for a country Inn in a beautiful location where service is paramount and accomodation is comfortable - this is it! The recently refurbished White Hart combines the traditional qualities of an historic property with attentive service and newly refurbished rooms. The hotel has come through a difficult period with a change in ownership, has been improved and renovated and the staff are motivated and really rising to the challenge of providing a product that is both distinctive and of high quality. We would definitely stay here again. This hotel is on the up and up.

We stayed at the White Hart on Wednesday 27th March, the staff were very friendly and good at their job, our room was very good the bed was the best I have sleeped in other than my own. The dinner was very good and a good Menu.
So I would recomend this hotel over any one of the 4/5 star hotels.

What a wonderful stay we enjoyed at The White Hart. From the moment we arrived with a warm welcome, and a warm fire in the bar, we couldn't really have asked for more...and usually expect a lot less from a quiet place in a small town out of season. However, the staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful, there was a good atmosphere and wide selection of beers (and dog biscuits) in the bar, and the quality of the food puts many more august restaurants to shame. Game featured strongly on the menu, and my personal favourites were the quail with pistachio mousse to start and a main course of venison - simply perfect. It's actually quite hard work to create a relaxed, "home" atmosphere...but the folks at the White Hart make it look easy.

Room Tip: We were at the back of the hotel. The soundproofing of the windows must be excellent because we did...

Thank you so much for taking the time to review the hotel and for giving us such a glowing review! It really is appreciated and it's great for the team here to see positive feedback from our guests. Moretonhampstead itself is a friendly town and we value our visitors at all times of the year and are keen to show you the (many) delights of this area and ensure you have a great stay. Our chef and his team work hard to keep the menu fresh and seasonal and we like to include game on the menu as often as we can, so we're delighted to hear you enjoyed it. Come and see us again soon!

After a recent stay at Mill End Hotel Chagford where the food and welcome were terrible, I felt compelled to review our stay at the White Hart hotel. The welcome was super friendly & all our needs were superbly attended to. Unlike Mill End the General Manager Karen goes above & beyond to keep customers happy & the food & wine were excellent. We paid far less for a 100% better experience than at Mill End Hotel. We highly reccommend & will be returning!
