The old Star Inn did the town a favour and finally closed a couple of years ago. It has now been replaced with a completely restructured, modern, dynamic business which on the evening of our visit had close to four hundred customers. Yes unbelievably the capacity is 403. It's a 'Tardis'.
Little problem when we entered as there is no 'pick up' signage so you don't actually know what to do. Is it a pub or is it a restaurant ? During the hour and a half of our visit we saw lots of people enter and look around wondering what to do next. I later raised this with one of the managers and she said that there was a sign at the door but we could not find one. Anyway no big deal…. Just find a table and order everything at the bar. This routine you eventually see on the menu in tiny print but not until you have had to work it out yourself.
So down to business. It's a good 'Pub Grub' operation which has taken the trouble to have a good 'local' community interest. Lots of Honiton history details around like pictures and lace in the ladies loo. Lots of locals also employed which has to be good news.
No booking is available so just turn up and you will probably get a table. Menu is basic and keenly priced.
Local Ales are featured. Five minute wait at the bar to order. Our starters arrived after 20 minutes but our mains took another half an hour ! So, at fifty minutes, that was 'slow' service for a simple main course, but it was only day four of opening. Pricing at two meals for £8.50 was good.
Open every day 8 a.m. through until at least midnight. Smart décor (pic) but a bit enclosed with few windows. Padded seating at wooden tables. Two outside seating areas, one is non-smoking. Children welcome provided ALL their adults are eating. Easy disabled access and there are ingredients lists on display for those with allergies. No hygiene certificate on display yet but I expect everything in the kitchen will be top class professional. Loos were spotless and very well designed and fitted out.
No own parking but it is in the middle of town with public car parks nearby (free after 6 p.m.)
It's the only eating out place I have ever been into which had three uniformed Security Guards at work.
Refreshing to know the local lads will not be causing trouble late on a Friday night !
So my overall verdict is 'give it a try and you probably won't be disappointed'. A few minor teething issues to sort out. Good luck to this welcome new venture in Honiton.
