“Great service but looking a little tired”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

To sum, the hotel was great for what we wanted, visiting as a couple and getting away from it all. The service was good, in other areas things could have been a little better.
Firstly on arrival we were well-greeted, booked in with good service, the room we were given was fine, very comfortable bed, good view and 2 great night's sleep. The room was a little tired in places and a little grubby in others. This was not unhygienic but lacking polish here and there, a few odd stains and nothing a bit of elbow-grease would not shift in the bathroom.
Second, the food was great, buffet cold and fresh cooked hot for breakfast. The one night we had the pre-booked evening meal all was good. Prices were what one would expect and standard fine. It was in the restaurant that the service was notably good, all as one would wish.
We are not golfers but we did use the gym and pool which were as one would expect. The gym equipment was good and functioning, the pool was ok but once again, the decor looked a little tired, the floor tiles a bit faded and a renovation will be required soon. Service from the staff was good.
Location of the hotel is ideal for a trip to Slapton, Dartmouth or the Devon countryside - great for a couple.
To conclude, the service and food were first-class, the hotel is a little tired and rooms in need of a bit of a re-vamp.

Dear Chris,

Thank you for taking the time to leave comments for us on Tripadvisor. We really do appreciate this. We do accept that our spa facilities need to be updated and we are currently going through a period of due diligence with a view to upgrading our leisure club. I would also like you to know that we have passed on your comments to our housekeeping team and will ensure that any areas that require some extra attention are dealt with!
On a more positive not, I must express my thanks for your positive feedback with regards to the service throughout your stay, the beds, the food and the location. It really is appreciated and I will be sure to pass all this along.

Many Thanks

We stayed here for 2 nights towards the end of February, and we have very mixed reviews.
The room was modern and very clean. The bed was large and comfortable with good pillows. However, the stairs needed a good clean.

Breakfast was freshly cooked to order, most unusual these days, and generally very good. There was a good fruit bowl, and one of our party tried the continental selection, which was extremely generous. Breakfast service was good.

It was nice to have the pool, sauna etc, but they are looking quite tired now. The air temperature in the pool was quite cold and the walls of the sauna are coming away; when you close the door firmly, polystyrene balls fall out of the ceiling. There's also a very dodgy looking hair dryer in one of the changing cubicles.

The men used the driving range and a very helpful lady allowed them to borrow clubs even though the shop would be closed by the time they finished. Unfortunately, the same could not be said the next day when a man was on duty. Although it was 4:40 and the shop didn't close until 5, it was "far too much trouble" to allow them to borrow clubs for the driving range while he was on duty.

We pre booked dinner before we arrived for both nights of our stay. We were quite disappointed with the selection available for the fixed price menu and the quality did not always please us. The seafood risotto was cold and had to be sent back, the homemade burgers were very dry, however, the duck confit was delicious and the cheeseboard was generous. Service was good.

There are enough positive things to want me to score this as a good, but the choice I have is very good or average, so I have to rate it as average overall.

Dear Ali L,

Many thanks for taking the time to feed your comments back to us. I am too disappointed with some of your experiences during your stay as we always aim to exceed customer expectations. We are aware our leisure club is in need of an update and we are currently going through a due diligence process with a view to upgrading to the level of the bedrooms as you saw them. I must also make comment on your positive feedback of the “very helpful lady” from our pro shop. I will be sure to pass your feedback onto her as I know this will mean a lot.
Thank you also for your kind comments with regards to our breakfast, and your compliments of our bar and bistro staff both at breakfast and during dinner service.
I must apologise for your experience in the pro shop on your second day and your disappointment in your evening meal. I would like to let you know that as a result of your feedback, we currently creating an entirely new menu with a wide variety of choice to suit all tastes.
I would be extremely grateful if you would take the time to give me a call so that we can discuss your experiences here with us further and hopefully encourage you to return and see the changes that will have been made as a result of your feedback.

Many Thanks

Jamie Waugh

We stayed here for valentines day. We r not golf players but it was a beautiful setting. Would make the perfect wedding venue. The restaurant was especially lovely with a gorgeous conservatory area. The room was exactly as described and very comfortable. We were staying with a small baby and made to feel very welcome by the delightful staff. An extremely enjoyable stay.

bit disappointed when we arrived room felt cold and dark, and when looking out of the window there was just a messy bank . Asked to be moved but there were no other rooms available till the next day, found out how to put the heat on and turned on the bedside lights and the place looked much more welcoming , reported in the feedback form that it would be much better if they did that before you arrived.Rooms were basic. Food was very good and the staff could not have been nicer everyone was very friendly. i had a massage which was very good. all the rooms were very clean.

Room Tip: sorry did not see any other rooms

Dear Valynda,

First of all, thank you very much for the positive comments that you had with regards to our food and especially the staff. I am also extremely glad that you enjoyed your beauty treatment.
To the matter your room on arrival, I must first of all apologise for this. The rooms should always be presented in a warm and cosy manner, especially during the cold snap that we experienced during your stay.
As a result of your feedback, I hope that you will be pleased to hear that we have reiterated to all housekeeping staff to ensure that, during cold snaps especially the heating remains on from the moment they leave the room to ensure that it is warm for a guests arrival.
We have also added onto the winter final check list for all rooms that the lights should be left on when a guest is arriving in the room to ensure a warm atmosphere on arrival.

Thank you once again for your comments and I hope you can see that we are working to make improvements and this wouldn't have been possible without your feedback.

Kind Regards

12 of us (males) have just come back from a (cold) but most enjoyable week end. The weekend package was exceptional value and we were able to stay in the lodges close by the hotel. They were excellent. We will be back in 2014.

Just returned from an excellent 3 day golfing break with a group from our golf club. Very good value. Tough course with the wind blowing though we were fortunate to have dry weather.
Rooms were well-maintained. Just one problem - at least two of our party were kept awake by a humming noise from somewhere in the accommodation area. The intensity of the noise seemed to vary but was sufficient to wake you in the early hours.

Hi Jon,

First of all, I am extremely glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and despite the wind you were able to get out on the golf course.
With regards to the humming, I am not sure as to what this may have been but hopefully this was reported and then dealt with immediately. We do have an on site maintenance team who could come out to investigate such a problem.
I hope this did not affect your stay to adversley and that you will return to visit us once again.

Kind Regards

We spent four nights at the hotel and used it as our base to visit our favourite locations in the South Hams. DGCC is in an excellent location for visiting Dartmouth, Torcross, Kingsbridge and Salcombe and provides great facilities when you need a break from driving around.
We were fortunate enough to book a good deal on the internet but we were really impressed by the whole package this hotel provides. I almost want to keep this hotel a secret but when somewhere makes this effort they deserve to do well. Our room was comfortable and spacious with a lovely view over the golf course. The cooked breakfast was absolutely superb with a huge choice available. The staff were excellent throughout our stay being both efficient and friendly.
Although we couldn't use the course due to injury I did use the driving range and putting green for a few hours. I can't wait to return to play this course as it looks an amazing challenge. We would highly recommend this hotel but don't tell too many people please!

Room Tip: Ask for a golf course view room.
