Ok, I looked on here to write my review and I've had to write it like this because there's not anywhere else to write my review.
Basically my husband and I thought we would stay in one of Rick Steins dwellings as a treat. We both like Rick Stein and my husband is a particular fan.
There was nothing left in the hotel so we went for this annex which is probably about a 2 minute walk away from the hotel.
On arrival you have to park your car in St Edmonds house car park as there is no other parking facility. A porter helped us with our luggage and showed us to our accomodation.
There is a locked gate to which steps or a lift take you to a building which hosts 3 apartments. On first arriving you enter the bedroom, with the bathroom to the left and a partition which sections off the lounge area. 2 large flat screen tvs adorn the walls. There's a gas log fire with shelves next to it housing real logs.
The bathroom is beautiful with a large bathtub and walk in shower. The shower is wonderfully powerful.
On first entering the room you think this is lovely but on closer inspection we were really disappointed.
The floor is wooden but it's absolutely covered in scratches and looks like someone's used a chemical cleaner on it or used sand paper in certain areas. There is a little wooden occasional table with a shelf under it which had an inch worth of dust on it. This remained throughout our two night stay.
The logs which were a nice feature were caked in inches of dust. The bottom of the table legs were all worn away as though the chemical used to clean the wooden floor had been brushed against the legs. This gave a very worn out, unkempt look.
Outside the balcony there were a dozen fag butts thrown on the grass. Either someone had been smoking in the room and thrown their butts there or someone had stood on the path by the little wooden gate and discarded their butts there. Either way it was an eyesore. Also an old flannel was outside the bathroom window on the grass.
There is no chest of drawers to pack your clothes away. This was very odd and consequently we had to leave our smalls in our suitcase though there are a couple of very slim drawers under the wardrobe. Certainly not enough room to put what we had in them though.
The mini bar was very well stocked. You get a bottle of fresh milk and tea, coffee, hot chocolate, plus some cookies complimentary. Everything else you have to pay for and the prices are quite expensive given they're very small bottles of wine, champagne etc. Still I suppose that's to be expected.
It's very noisy in the room above as they obviously also had a wooden floor. The cleaner makes heck of a noise( through no fault of her own I'm sure) also a delivery lorry of sorts is very noisy in the mornings. Forget a lie in..
On the 2 nd night of our stay I was having a lay down and suddenly water started dripping through the smoke detector which was directly above my husbands side of the bed. I called my husband to which we placed towels on the bed in order to prevent too much damage.
I called reception from the phone in the room and got a very dismissive response. I was told that the porter wouldn't be able to come to our room for 20 minutes to which I was shocked. Baring in mind water is coming through our ceiling onto our bed.
She then went on to blame the people staying in the room above saying they obviously hadn't shut their shower door properly. I was disgusted. Number 1 it's not their fault if they didn't shut the door properly and number 2 there isn't even a door on the shower as its a walk in. It had clearly happened before and if their shower was anything like ours half the grouting was missing, therefore this was more likely the cause of the leak.
It was pouring with rain outside and in the end I put my rain coat on, hood up and marched over to the reception within the bistro/ hotel. I was told the maintenance guy was at our room, so then walked back in the pouring rain.
I get there and he also blames the people upstairs to which I tell him it's not their fault and at the prices we paid I would've expected better. I also told him about the dust and said we hadn't wanted to make a fuss because we were on holiday. He walked round to the table, wiped his hand over the bottom shelf, then wiped his hand on his arm of his jacket and agreed it was unacceptable and said he would talk to housekeeping.
He then asked if we're going out to which I said we had a booking at the seafood restaurant. He said whilst we were gone he would arrange for housekeeping to come and change the bedding plus they would turn the mattress. I asked for another room and he said they had nothing else available. I said this isn't really good enough and what if the other guests had a late night shower and water went onto our bed whilst we slept. Anyway, I was then told if I wanted to speak to the manager, she was on holiday but he could give me her number for me to call her. I asked him if he was joking. He then said he could call her for me if I wanted. I mean, what the hell!! Is it my job to call the manager whilst she's away to report that we have water seeping throuh the smoke detector and that I'm unhappy?
We were given a discount and given a complimentary glass of champers in the seafood restaurant but all in all it ruined our holiday. I was worrying all night in bed that there may be another leak and the whole thing was badly managed.
Sorry but I have spent many many holiday breaks in far superior places for half the money. Would I go again..... I seriously doubt it.
Oh and the dust was still there on our day of departure. Nice touch :-(
Come on Rick, sort things out please.
