“2 day break in north berwick”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

hotel was excellently located overlooking the sea .golf course and with view of Bass rock from our bedroom window.
I had requested a sea view and was delighted with our room. It was large with a large bathroom and beautifully furnished. Our welcome at reception was warm and friendly. We ate at the hotel both nights and the meals were excellent.( we used their "spring break" package- IE. 2 nights dinner bed and breakfast + £10.00 credit on bill) . We think this was excellent value for money. Breakfast was also good in a pleasant environment. A good hotel to chill out in. Their leisure facilities were excellent and I loved sitting in the warm Jacuzzi OUTDOORS! This was my first visit but will definitely go back.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view- you will never tire of the vista outside your window

We use this chain of hotels fairly regularly but it was our first visit to North Berwick. The hotel is situated in a beautiful position with stunning views from the back. Unfortunately we were on the ground floor at the front. The staff were friendly and polite and the hotel clean and welcoming. A short walk takes you into the town which has lots of lovely individual shops and plenty of eating places. The walk along the sea front is wonderful. A most enjoyable stay.

room tiny and dated......heated towel rail and extractor did not work......8 TV channels programmed into our TV...no channel 4 or 5.. batteries were flat in remote control.....breakfast buffet meagre....scrambled eggs dry and tasteless.
The hotel does have a wonderful setting, and nice gardens,so be sure to pay the extra for a sea-view,and not a street-view,if you insist on going there.

Having previously had a disappointing attempted visit to the spa, I am very please to say that my second visit (using a spa day voucher) was a very different and much improved experience...absolutely wonderful massage...and pleasant chill space. Things that would improve the experience even more: having printed map and/or wall map of the spa and health facility on the wall in the first room (where you go to fill out the forms) so that the visitor/guest knows where the changing rooms are...where the pool and other 'wet' facilities are and so on; having a small bin for used teabags in the room where you go to relax; being provided with some sort of bag or basket to carry books, towel/s, and other things around during the visit to the spa. Little things...but would make a real difference. The staff were lovely and helpful throughout my visit, though, which was great.

We spent two nights in the Hotel weekend, as a young couple on a romantic getaway. We’ve previously stayed with the hotel and experienced flawless service, and hoped to book our Wedding here in 2016. We stayed on a Dinner, Bed and Breakfast rate.

The location of the hotel is fantastic, and its Spa facilities are second to none, but the accommodation, reception, bar and restaurants are a different story.

Accommodation & Front office:

At check in we where greeted in the traditional Headland manner, and shown to our room was a bit grubby with stains on the mirrors, windows, and dripping stains down the outside of the wardrobe door and wall. We advised reception twice during the day, and nothing was done

We found we had to report several issues such as blown light bulbs, broken sash windows, and handles hanging off a door on the third floor.

During our stay we found a few members of the front office staff to be apathetic, and inattentive to our needs, and requests (to have the room cleaned, and the warm welcome received ceased, with the staff clearly showing signs of being under pressure for the rest of the weekend.

The Restaurant

On our first night in the restaurant, we where shown to a table with dirty glasses, and cutlery. These where replaced with further dirty glasses (fingerprints and lipstick on the glasses). We where served still water twice despite requesting sparkling water. The wine served was also off, whilst this is not the Hotel fault, we had to get the Restaurant Supervisor to resolve the issue. Service was otherwise inattentive, and there was a significant delay to our mains due to a party being served in another area of the hotel.

On our second night , we where again faced with dirty glasses (residue on the glasses) and dirty cutlery (not just water marked). Service was again inattentive and poorly coordinated. The same water debacle ensued.

The Bar

Service was slow and challenging. The team seemed to be more interested in continuing conversations that serving for most of the weekend. Glasses presented where often declined as they where dirty. From fluff from towels smeared over the insides of glasses, to residue of other drinks, dishwater, and lipstick stains.

The Spa

The team are more welcoming, and happy to engage than the rest of the Headland team. Facilities seem well maintained, and the therapists are quite knowledgeable.

Overall impressions

The Hotel is in decline. The attention to detail that the hotel flaunts in marketing material is far from the standard you recieve. Be prepared to wait, and suffer poor service from staff in compromise for the location. The frontline team has changed, and not for the better. Duty Managers agreed with this too in conversations with them.

We where honest and upfront with the duty managers and staff throughout the stay, but it was clear that even their best efforts and promises fell well short of being acceptable. Promises of improvement in the basics turned out to be fruitless, and rather upsetting.
