“Pity about the drink prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

Spent 2 nights here in September. Great hotel. Very comfortable, friendly efficient staff, incrediblre food. Our room had a clear view of the 16th green. This provided more entertainment the the tv. My wife ( the golfer in the family ) was heartened by the performance of the players. The hotel's only a 10 minute scenic ( the barman's description ) walk to the town centre of North Berwick.
The only minus point was the drink prices. Why do hotels charge so much for ordinary wines and beers? If the drink had been more reasonably priced this would have been an excellent score.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a view of the golf course

Dear GordonSmith186525,

Delighted to read your review, thank you for taking the time to write. The views are wonderful and you're correct defiantly worth purchasing a sea view room to admire at every opportunity.

Your feedback has been documented with Macdonald Hotels and the General Manager with concern over the drinks prices, so I thank you for your points raised.

Warm Regards,

Kate - Brihony Dunnion

Dear Dennis C,

I am delighted to read your review on the Marine, thank you for taking the time to write. John Paul at the Marine is our 2 AA rosette restaurant and does have amazing views across the golf course out to sea, we are very fortunate to have such a view and food to match.

The location and view is fantastic. The welcome was warm. Breakfast was very good. What pained me was some small things, like our bathroom door opening into our room door (bang) and the bath being so shallow (I think we had a disabled person's bath as we were on the Ground floor). It was nice to in easy walking distance of the town, which is beautiful. Had a very friendly taxi driver called Alan Murray from Shuttles who picked us up and dropped us off at Edinburgh Airport.

Dear Richard A,

Thank you for posting your review on the Marine. Delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay. Macdonald Hotels has an award winning breakfast and does have a wonderful selection. Thank you for your feedback in relation to your room, there is an adapted room on the ground floor; however I will get our maintenance team to check all ground floor rooms to see if they can resolve the bang, so thank you for your feedback.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Marine in the near future.

What a wonderful location, views and facilities...... all let down by ridiculous prices for drinks.... I joked with the barman the they should have defibulator at the ready, because it really is shocking how expensive it is...... £8 for a gin and tonic is not only beyond a joke its put me off ever visiting again.

Rethink your drinks prices and I might be back

The Marine is situated on the edge of North Berwick overlooking the golf course and sea beyond from the rear windows. The lounges, bar and dining room are situated to take advantage of this sea view.
We booked a 2 night stay through the Macdonald website and it included a cream tea on arrival. We also pre-paid breakfast and dinner each day. The hotel is 'well presented' in all the public areas from entrance to dining room. We had booked a 'standard double' which was of adequate size although could really only accomodate a standard double bed.
Brakfasts were excellent with a good cold buffet selection and the cooked hot dishes were served at your table. Dinner was also of good quality BUT the menu is very restricted in choice, would definately struggle if staying for a few days. We had paid £25pp in advance and this gave you a £30 allowance from the A La Carte menu . This allowance allows you to have a 3 course dinner from the menu as long as you exclude the more expensive dishes like steaks etc. Also a bit mean to charge for bread before your meal, first time we have experienced this in a hotel when staying as a guest.
The restricted menu and the 'bread charge' are the only negatives and if returning would only book bed and breakfast as there are a large choice of restaurants in the town centre which is only a short walk from the hotel .
There is a Spa Centre in hotel but we didn't visit or use it during our stay so cannot comment.

Room Tip: If you want a view over the golf course towrds the sea then a room at rear of building id best.

Visited North Berwick for the first time and stayed at the hotel as part of a golfing trip. The location and views were excellent as was the general service of the staff and although the hotel may look a bit tired in some areas the overall experience was good. The restaurant, whilst somewhat restricted in its menu, was of a high quality and overall I could not say I had any serious complaints during my stay.

Stayed here for 2 nights dinner bed and breakfast. Was disappointed with the standard of cleanliness and the food was not up to standard. After paying full price upon booking was asked for a £30 supplement for food which wasn't even worth the original price that I had paid. Drinks were also highly overpriced.
The outer swimming pool was grubby on tiles and there was dirt in the corners in the actual pool.

the lounge was nice but had cobwebs in corners and on lamps.

After a day out I got back to my room at 4pm to find it hadn't even been serviced, so had to sit in the lounge until it was done.

Staff however were good and service in general was ok.
