“welcoming and restful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2009

I have had a very different experience from other reviewers and wanted to speak out on behalf of the Globe. Every member of staff we met was very friendly and helpful. One of the team offered to carry suitcases to our car this morning. The room was spacious and spotless. Our evening meal and breakfast were excellent. We'd stay here again.

Thank you for speaking out on our behalf following some less than complimentary reviews last year.
I am really pleased you had a lovely stay at the Globe.

Contacted hotel re current offer seen in Travel News of a daily newspaper last weekend, they mailed back to confirm the offer as being £10 per night B&B per person on a 2 night booking till 31st March with the condition you eat in their restaurant (not bar) on each day, min of 2 courses.

Mailed back to them immediately asking viability of a couple of dates but also asking for a sample restaurant menu in order we could check out food and prices before booking but no reply .......... if they cannot be on the ball with enquiries then I have no confidence in even booking, not looking good.

I am very sorry you had no email response to your queries, this is unforgivable and of course led you to decide against staying at the Globe; Oour loss.
I do hope you will try us in the future.....our office administration is much improved..... as are many other areas of our offering.

From the moment we arrived every part of this short break at the Globe was a huge disappointment.

Upon arrival it seemed that the staff on duty were surprised that we had a reservation. The subsequent lack of welcome or introduction was most off-putting.

The room, though large and airy, was dirty and shabby. The bathroom was unclean, particularly the toilet and shower area.

Notably though was the noise. We arrived after 2pm and were greeted in our room by the sound of a loud vibration. This started again at 6pm and went on until 9pm. After complaining to the staff on duty it turned out to be the extraction fan in the kitchen. Something it would seem they have overlooked or chosen not to correct.

The evening meal at the Globe was also a major disappointment.

The much lauded 'recent refurbishment' was not evident only a tasteless, cheap and gaudy additional restaurant stuck on the back of the characterless bar area.

The food as advertised in the glossy photographs on their website does not in any way reflect what you could come to expect when dining at the Globe. The presentation (or lack of) was noticeably, as was the distinct lack of care in the preparation and variety available on the menu.

The restaurant staff were rude and disinterested - this is true in fact for most if not all of the staff at the Globe.

The breakfast was a pathetic waste of time. A bowl of limp fruit and some dried-out croissants does not constitute a breakfast. The fried breakfast option was served in a pasta bowl with the continuing lack of care or presentation.

Don't be impressed by the connection to the Holkham Estate as advertised on the website. The Earl of Leicester may have bought this pub but that is where the association stops.

Don't waste your time or money on this place: you'll only be disappointed.

All the bedrooms at the Globe have now (June 2009) been redecorated.
Our restaurant, was criticised for being tasteless and gaudy .....(you should have seen it before we took over the pub in 2005!!) ....
By the end of this month we will have given it another overhaul which I am confident will meet with general approval.

Where to start....We decided to visit the Globe for an evening meal and the service was dredfull, we were seated / isolated in a small, not even chabby chic, just chabby room, and then we were forgotten...
The resturant was by no means full or busy but they managed to serve our starters 15 mins apart followed by a 30 minute wait for our mains, the food was inspid and non descript, which you would think would be an impossible task due to the wealth of lovely goodies on their doorstep, but somehow they managed that.
After speaking to the resturant manager about the situlation, i was left feeling confused and angry, surley he must care about what his paying customers think, but apparently not.
The moral to this story is try the Crown down the road

I can only say I am sorry that our service let us down here. It is quite wrong that you were forgotten and had starters served with so long a gap in between.
I am surprised that our manager did not appear to take an interest and am investigating. It is worrying that a complaint is not accorded a proper response.

Again, with our food, I don't know what to say. Despite the impending recession our we seem to be serving more and more meals adn to an increasing amount of return customers. Perhaps it is an issue of managing expectations. We are a pub and not a two rosette restaurant like our other hotel, the Victoria at Holkham. I always enjoy my meals at the Globe and regard it as good pub food.

OK, so maybe the place could do with a little maintenance, but the rooms are large and pleasant, the staff are friendly and the food was excellent - particularly the breakfast.
Think of The Globe as a nice pub with a decent restaurant and pleasant rooms, don't go looking for The Victoria at Holkham on a budget and you won't be disappointed.
We were only there for a single night but I wish it could have been longer.

It is gratifying to read a review such as this, which I honestly believe reflects the views of most of our visitors to the Globe.
The food is great and I do check up on the breakfasts from time to time.

I try to visit the pub at least once a week and do elicit feedback from customers. I discuss all this with our manager and we do act upon it.

As others have already remarked, someone spent some money here and did a good job, at the time. But it's already looking tired, as though maintenance is something one does every three years.

The small signs of a creak here and a peel there would be nothing to get exercised about if the overall feel of the place were a little more, er, hospitable.

The staff seemed willing enough but there was a feeling of decline, not to say dread, about everyone there. When the waiters wear haunted looks and the manager chainsmokes in the car park something is going wrong. And it really shows.

We stayed three nights and the daily specials were the same each day. Maybe I misread the board.

I hate to say it but you'd get better value from a chain. I never expected to hear myself say that.

I have spoken to Ian our manager on the subject of smoking out the front of the pub. It does not give the rigth impression and won't happen again.

With due repect, I think you did misread the "Specials" board as it does not advertise itself as a "Daily changing Specials" board, however, I do take your point that it could change a little more often than on a weekly basis, though some dishes like our Dublin Bay Prawns with garlic were so popular that we kept them as a Special for over a month.

i havent stayed at the hotel but recently took my partner and 4 year old daughter for a meal.It wasnt overly busy but it still took the barman and owner over 10 minutes to notice we were there. From then on it did not improve.I found the owner rude and arrogant.Questions were answered abruptly and it was clear he wasnt in the mood for customers. The barman was useless and spent more time staring into space and chatting to his mates than actually working.I am myself a chef and i have worked front of house in restaurants and hotels and if i showed characteristicts that the barman and manager showed that day i would have a warning or be sacked. In my opinion its not recommended and shall not be returning
