Our first time at Congham Hall so no previous history to compare it with. First impressions were good. Attractive looking building, stylish reception hall and a friendly welcome. Our room in the main hotel building had a terrace. It was shared with the adjacent room so would benefit from some sort of divider; in the event the room next door was unoccupied. Our room (Yarrow, Marrow, Gladioli?) was a little dark but that is inevitable with low ceilings. It was a good size with a decent place for making up the face, two so-called armchairs & a small table; said chairs broke the trades' descriptions act - no way could a person of normal proportions sit on them comfortably but we did have two window seats so not to worry. The big bed was supremely comfortable with lots of pillows so no complaints at all there. We we offered a "hospitality" tray in our room and were given something so boring we didn't bother with it. They are missing a trick here. A good tray makes guests feel pampered. We had a superb one on another short break earlier in the year; good teas, ground coffee, cafetiere, home-made goodies to eat - yummy! Our bathroom was ok with a freestanding bath which always look good, the rest being pretty ordinary - just the one basin and a tatty looking access panel which wasn't properly fixed. Adequate but not lush! The shower was horrid! An attached mini wet room which was almost pitch black with nowhere to put shampoo etc except on the floor. Why fit a teeny little soap dish then give guest toiletries in bottles? Makes no sense to me. Rainfall showers are suggestive of some sort of luxury showering experience but they really do need an attached handset in case one does not want a total drench (don't even think of telling me to wear a shower cap) and for the undercarriage. Well, that's my opinion and I know as I have one at home in our wet room. I can honestly say the hotel bathroom was not a patch on ours! Though, to be fair, they did cure the drainy smell while we were having dinner.
The pool was a good size for a decent swim according to my husband.
We were able to eat on the terrace for both dinner and breakfast except on the last night of our stay and this was lovely. We enjoyed all the food we had, no real complaints about flavour, presentation etc and we thought the ipad wine list was a bit of fun. It was service that let things down. This applied especially at breakfast when it was difficult to get attention at all and then things were erratic. Also, toasted bread is meant to be brown; I had to send back the flaccid slices served up to us. There was a bit of a hiccup at dinner on our last night when we waited and waited for our main course. In truth we were quite happily chatting then realised it has been about 45 minutes since our starters were cleared. The restaurant manager made up for this magnanimously with a reduction on the bill so, again, no real complaints.
All in all we had a lovely weekend. We were both in the mood for a good few days away, we love this area of Norfolk and the hotel has some excellent points. Would we go there again? Well, possibly not. It is expensive and there were, I think, quite a few things letting the place down.

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to write such a comprehensive report about your stay with us in July. Looking after our guests is the cornerstone of what we are about and getting the service aspects just right is critically important if we are to continue to succeed in welcoming our guests back or at least spread the good word. We didn’t quite make it in your case as evidenced by the fact you would hesitate from returning, although rest assured the points you mention have all been taken into consideration as part of reviewing how we can continue to develop. You may be interested to learn that over the forthcoming winter we will be installing “larders” in all our rooms; something that we are very excited about and hopefully will be warmly received by our guests.
