“Good food , huge portions”

Quiet bar restaurant . The food arrived fairly promptly and the portions were huge . Polite staff and even made us a fuss of our dog with a treat. Second visit , will probably return at some point

“No compliments to the chef!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2014

At the end of a short break in Norfolk, we decided to treat ourselves to a really good final meal. The Blakeney Manor Hotel looked promising, since its menu appeared to include a good range of vegetarian options. We had to dine in the bar, since we were told the restaurant was fully booked – but that was OK. However, perhaps the fact that three of veggie choices included chips with the pasta should have signalled that all was not well!

All three of us chose the wild mushroom ravioli. Five minutes later the waitress returned to announce that they had only one serving of this item, but that the chef could devise an alternative pasta dish combining the ravioli with gnocchi. Two of us accepted this alternative, while I reselected a quorn and vegetable curry.

Wikipedia states that a curry’s “common feature is the incorporation of complex combinations of spices and/or herbs, usually including fresh or dried hot chillies”. Clearly the chef is unaware of this definition, since there was no trace of spice or herbs in the concoction that arrived. It consisted of primarily of chopped peppers in a tomato-based sauce, without any spicy heat whatsoever, and quite tasteless. The naan bread was certainly not made on the premises – it was the worst supermarket quality: two dry, totally flavourless small pieces that looked like pitta bread.

The other two diners were singularly unimpressed. One remarked that the gnocchi tasted like a supermarket ready meal, and there was no parmesan sprinkled on top, as advertised. Perhaps unsurprisingly the waitress did not return to enquire if our meal was all right, and no one asked if we had enjoyed it when we paid the bill.

Situated on the quay front, the hotel looks classy and inviting, but it was a very bad choice, and not the kind of ending to our holiday that we had hoped for.
