We have just had 3 nights at The George but i don't know how to rate it
We booked late so we had to change rooms after the first night. Both rooms and bathrooms were very well decorated and clean
Reception on arrival was excellent
Dinner on the Saturday night was hectic as the restaurant was full and the staff seemed new and inexperienced so there was along wait for food, when it arrived it was very good and reasonably priced.
The wines were not expensive
Breakfasts were cooked to order and again the wait could be long
You got the impression that there was a shortage of staff and they changed every day
On Tuesday morning the staff found 15/20 people in the restaurant at 8;30 and panicked. No one seemed to be in charge, there were no glasses for the fruit juices no one preparing the breakfasts and some guests left before the manager arrived to attempt to restore order
If this hotel could be run by a properly trained staff it would make a fortune; it's location is excellent; the accomodation is good and the food was good.
BUT it is under staffed and under managed
I would say that all of the staff were polite and where possible tried to help but in reality they didn't really know what to do

“Sadly not what I'd expect from a hotel”

The George Hotel

Jun 30, 2008

I took my husband to stay at the George for a birthday treat having stayed in may hotels in East Anglia I decided to try somewhere new.

Unfortunately this is not somewhere I would stay again.

This is more like a pub with rooms than a hotel.

On the plus side the room was refurbished to a high standard. On the minus side there were the following:
- Shabby communal areas (in particular the stairs)
- Not enough staff on, in particular at breakfast time which led to poor service.
- No communal lounge area.

“We'll be back”

The George Hotel

Mar 22, 2008

Wanted somewhere to stay in Norfolk and close to the sea, we took pot luck and booked the George from their web site. When we arrived, from the external appearance we both felt we might have got it wrong, however, when we got to our room it was such a pleasant surprise; clean, recently decorated with a large double bedroom, good sized bathroom and a very comfortable sitting room. The views over the marshes are great.

We booked a table in the restaurant and sat down around 9pm. I had mussels to start that were plump and tasty, my partner had pigeon breast and she said that was soft and very tasty too. We both had rump steak for our main, both were tender and having ordered mine rare I was pleased to find it was just that, something which seems to defy many chefs! Dessert was abandoned as we were both too full to consider it.

We had a very comfortable night and decided to skip breakfast in exchange for a lay in. We went to the bar around 10am in search of coffee and although service had ended, were offered breakfast.

The staff were pleasant and attentive, the food very good and the room we had extremely comfortable and well decorated / furnished.

We'll be going back in the very near future.

“One of our favourite places”

The George Hotel

Jan 20, 2008

We've just returned from a weekend break at the George.
It's a quiet country pub with rooms and a restaurant, only a short walk from the Cley marshes nature reserve, so ideal for us as keen birdwatchers.

Our room overlooked the marshes and had been recently refurbished - simply decorated with a very powerful shower, just the thing after a day's walking and birdwatching. The restaurant menu includes local produce and we had delicious meals on both nights, including medallions of fillet steak and roast suckling pig as main courses. There's a reasonably priced wine list and a good selection of wines by the glass. The staff were friendly and helpful and as always we had a relaxing break. It's about our fourth visit and it's one of our favourite places.

“Bloody misery”

The George Hotel

Didn't stay there but booked in for dinner on Sunday 21st October 2007. Had a couple of drinks first at the bar which was fine as we were early and it gave us time to look at the menu. No wine menu offered though. Called through to table to find food already there when we arrived - have never encountered that before and it was a little disconcerting. My husband had ordered calves liver - his favourite - however it was inedible - raw and tough with pools of blood leaking from it. He asked for it to be cooked more thoroughly and was told 'this is how its served here'. Meanwhile my dinner was going cold so I had to eat it - hate it when that happens. In amongst the delay we tried to order some wine - menu was given to us, but no one came back to take our order. Could at the same time hear plates being flung and shouting and commotion in the kitchen - someone had dared to complain!!
Eventually when the liver was returned, no knife and fork was offered and there was no one about to ask for one, so having finished my dinner, I wiped my cutlery and gave it to my husband! Liver was still tough and gristly so we cut our losses and asked for the bill.
Would not recommend this place to anyone. Non existant waiting staff, poor logistics, high prices for poor quality food. Better to go to the Three Swallows down the road which is pub grub at its best.
