Having read previous reviews I was a little nervous as to what we were going to find at Whoop Hall when we arrived for our KGB deal two-night stay, but we were pleasantly surprised.
We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and the hotel was full of two large lunch parties and our room wasn't quite ready but the Manager immediately sat us down in the lovely and warm bar lounge, complete with its log fire, with complimentary coffee for my husband a an iced water for me while we waited. Joaquim I think is his name, and although he is very brisk I wouldn't say he was rude as noted in a previous review - in fact we found him helpful and accommodating and with a dry, amusing sense of humour.
Our room was No 16 on the ground floor as my husband has limited mobility - I had explained this when booking so they were prepared, and the room was family sized so spacious enough for my husband and his rollator (a modern zimmer on wheels), with a good-sized bathroom and a shower separate to the bath.
For the benefit of any disabled readers: this room was fine for my husband as he can walk with his rollator, can manage a few steps and can stand with just a wall/rail for support - for anyone with less ability this room does have a rail by the toilet but only one side, and the shower is a cubicle not a wet room and has an approx 10inch step up into it, so it would not be suitable for all. It is accessible from Reception without steps, but there are two small steps up into the restaurant area (although the lounge and the bistro/breakfast area are step free) and three steps up to the leisure centre.
The room was clean, with crisp white bed covers and towels, but I have to agree with previous reviewers that the decor was 'jaded' and a bit shabby - but with a bit of TLC and re-decoration could be really nice. The room faces out onto the front, with a view of the hills and the A65 - we didn't find the vehicle noise any problem and we slept well both nights.
Dinner was lovely, and the service form Adi on Sunday and Charlotte on Monday was brilliant, very friendly. Rather than eat from the set menu included with the deal we chose to eat off the main menu instead, and take a £15 each allowance towards the cost. The food was very good, especially the chocolate ameretti mousse and the battered cauliflower florets - I liked the latter so much that on the second night the chef made some for me specially! Breakfasts were plentiful and a good choice - 5 cereals or porridge made to order, fresh fruit, yogurts, croissants - or a full english from bacon/sausage/fried bread/black pudding/toms/baked beans/button mushrooms/fried and scrambled eggs. Everything (except the porridge) was buffet-style so you could eat as much or as little as you wanted, and the supplies were continually topped up while we were there so nothing sat under the lights for too long.
Monday was a lovely bright sunny day and we went to Kirkby Lonsdale - a lovely quaint village with gorgeous shops (a dress, handbag, bath gel and slippers, handmade chocolates and a birthday card later.....) and lovely walks to Ruskin's View and along the river to Devil's Bridge. The walks were suitable for my husband's electric buggy (although negotiating the 'kissing gates' on the river path took a bit of ingenuity and a bit of muscle!) and the views very beautiful. I would certainly recommend a visit to the village. We then drove out to Hawes over the hills and past the Ribblehead Viaduct - again beautiful views and a quiet road with plenty of spaces to stop and 'take in the view'.
On arrival back at the hotel we had our Afternoon Tea which was part of our deal. This was welcome after the shopping and was very pleasant, although it was ok as opposed to great in comparison to other teas we've had - but enjoyable none the less.
I also used the leisure facilities both afternoons before dinner - the pool, spa and steam room are all lovely - well kept and a pleasure to use, with very friendly staff.
All the staff at the hotel were lovely, helpful and friendly and are the Hotel's greatest asset.
We enjoyed our stay here and would stay again if in the area.
