“A must have been”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2014

Since 1197 and the foundation of Fribourg, this gothic cathedral is a marvel. Climb the tower and you will have a stupendous view.

“Most notable for its beautiful stained glass”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

The cathedral has a beautiful series of stained glass windows by Jozef Mehoffer, a Polish painter, that date between 1896 and 1936. The Art Nouveau collection is one of the more famous in Europe. I particularly appreciated the fascinating scenes in each separate panel, and my husband and I spent some time trying to identify individuals and religious themes.

Also notable are the incredibly large and opulent marble statues in a series of what appear to be individual 3 sided prayer rooms. I haven't seen another cathedral quite like it.

The organs date from between 1824 and 1834 and were built by famous artist Aloys Mooser, a local, and draw prestigious musicians to the church.

The church is open daily, is free, and during certain hours, you can climb the 300+ stairs to the top of the tower for a superb view of the town. We visited the church later in the evening when the tower viewing was closed, so I'd check with your hotel or a local once you arrive if your heart is set on the tower. We weren't able to find anything online or in brochures that marked any kind of schedule for when the tower is open. Our hotel staff assured us you can even go up at night but it was closed by 5 pm during our visit. We visited on a week day so perhaps the tower's only open on weekends.

“A Gothic architectural gem! Impressive stained-glass windows!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

Legend has it that the 74-meter tower of the Cathedral is unfinished because there was no money left to complete the work. A Gothic architectural gem, this impressive cathedral was built between 1283 and 1490. You can climb the 368 steps to the top of the tower and enjoy views of the entire town of Fribourg from up there.

The stained-glass windows, created by Polish painter Jozef Mehoffer between 1896 and 1936, are one of the most important collections on the European continent in the field of religious Art Nouveau stained-glass windows. The series was completed in the 1970s by French painter Alfred Manessier.

The organs, built between 1824 and 1834, bring together classic and romantic features. They are the work of a local organ-maker, Aloys Mooser. His instruments very quickly acquired international repute and attracted famous musicians such as Franz Liszt and Anton Bruckner.

“Good Cathedral”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

It is a good cathedral but I've seen better in other cities, anyway we enjoyed it and for a small city like Fribourg it is interesting.

“Gorgeous”

I am not a big fan of cathedrals or churches, but St. Nikolaus is simply beautiful. You can feel the ages walking in there....
