The Roca Nivaria is a beautiful hotel set on a cliff in the Southern region of Tenerife. It is in a quiet, still developing area of Tenerife, Playa Paraiso. You enter the hotel through the main entrance on what is technically the third floor, because the hotel is set into the cliff. There is a lovely fountain welcoming you into the large, light airy reception. The reception staff were very efficent and spoke several languages. We asked them many, many questions throughout the week we stayed and all were answered quickly and politely.
On arrival the porter collected our bags and took them to our room, along with our son, who rode on the trolley. The main atrium of the building is a large square set behind the reception, set over four floors. This is where you will find the various restuarants, bars, computer area, excursion office and shops that the hotel has available. From the main atrium are two corridors which lead to the rooms on either side of the hotel. The corridors are open which gives the hotel a pleasant airy feel, although sometimes it gets a little two windy with the sea so close.
We stayed in a superior sea veiw room, which was very large. It had a large living area, in which beds were set up for our two young sons, a very large bathroom with separate bath and shower and two basins, a large bedroom for the adults with walk in storage and a large balacony complete with table and chairs and two recliners. Everything was provided in the room except for any tea and coffee making facilites. We however did ask for a kettle to warm up bottles for our youngest and this was provided. The hotel also provided a pleasant welcoming gift of food and wine and later in the week a bouquet of flowers mysteriously appeared.
The hotel is excellent for children. They have numerous facilities to provide for them. Firstly there are two clubs available, the mini club for 10 months to 3 years and the kids club for up to 12 years. There seems to be many activities available for them to do, although you do need to book the baby club and its for three hour slots only. You are most welcome to bring your children down to the club and stay and play with them. They do have a small play area and sandpit which our children enjoyed. Secondly the restuarant Garoe is set up with children in mind. The restaurant is very large and is divided into an adult only section and a family section. There were always plenty of high chairs as well as plastic cultery and plates available. Also there is a small play area to the rear of the restuarant called the Submarine where children can let off steam. Thirdly the hotel has plenty of cots, baby baths and anything else you might need, plus the staff are all very child friendly (most carry sweets in their pockets).
The hotel provides you with one card per person when you check in and you exchange these for pool towels, on your first visit to the pool. You are given two towels, one for the sun lounger and one for drying and these can be exchanged each day for fresh ones. Its a system that worked very well when we were there. They do discourage any "reserving" of sun loungers with towels. There are three pools, a small heated childrens pool, a large heated pool (both salt water) and a cold fresh water pool. The cold pool was far too cold when we were there (Feb) so we didn't use this much. The other pools were clean and well maintained and look out over the sea. There is also a jacuzzi in between the pools.
The hotel has several restuarants and bars available. The main one is Garoe which is where the buffet breakfast is held (2nd floor). This is a huge restuarant and the choice of breakfasts was staggering and of good quailty. You can choose to eat outside, which overlooks the pool and garden areas or inside. The pool has its own little restaurant where you can also have a buffet lunch or order snacks and drinks. Room service was very quick and well presented and the meals were very large. Most guests are all inclusive.
The hotel has a spa and many sporting facilites. They run many adult activities throughout the week and seem to particulary support golf and treking. The hotel itself is huge, we wandered through it a fair amount but I don't think we saw everything. There is a stairway and elevator that will take you down to the small beach area next to the hotel. As mentioned the hotel is set on a cliff overlooking the sea. There is a small black sand beach inlet which is perfect for children. Look for a door in the rocks underneath the hotel, you can use your card to enter and there are some showers to clean up with.
The hotel is set in a very quiet area, there is not much to do around it and the quailty of shops and restaurants is fairly poor. There is a small supermarket a few minutes walk away which is handy for essentials though. The hotel does recognise this and offers a free shuttle bus to its sister hotel Jardin which is in the main Costa Adeje area. There are plenty of restuarants, shops and tourist traps available here. There are buses (T.I.T.S.A) that run from outside the hotel to Los Cristanos and Los Gigantes for days out. The hotel also has their own excursion office which was excellent and the staff were really helpful. However this is where the hotel falls a little through no fault of its own. If you do choose to go on excursions you will almost certainly be the first to be picked up and the last to be dropped off, because of the hotel's isolated position. You tend to loose around 4 hours on a daytrip driving around hotels to do pick ups. I do believe I could tell you where every large hotel is now in the Southern Tenerife area. The local buses seem to run to most places and some of the big attractions run their own free buses as well. Santa Cruz is a pleasant day out and visiting Teide is a must.
All in all the hotel is beautiful, well maintained, with friendly staff who are always helpful. The food was excellent, house keeping was of a high quailty and the veiws are amazing. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to travellers looking for a quieter area of Tenerife.
