Went to Tenerife for a bit of pre Christmas sunshine and got it at the Sunset Bay Club at Torviscas. Although not easy to spot from the road our taxi driver knew exactly where to drop us and there was someone there to help with our luggage and to secure it while we went to check in and find out where our apartment was located.
Check in was easy and the staff were very pleasant but unfortunately we arrived at the 'wrong' time and had to wait for three hours before our room was ready at 17:00. Fortunately there are three bars/ restaurants within the complex right by reception so we had a wander round, spotted our room and had a coffee. When our room became available the guy from the luggage store was nowhere to be seen so the receptionist picked up the spare key, walked us to the luggage store and then to our room, very nice and extremely helpful.
The room we were in (H209) was not one of the ones that had been refurbished but it was pleasant enough with a nice, well equipped, smart little kitchen off the lounge area, two bedrooms both with en suite bathrooms. It was probably the bathrooms that were most in need of a re-fit although both were perfectly serviceable.
The bedrooms were on the small side but had plenty of wardrobe space in the little lobby area off which were both the bed and bathroom doors. Plenty of loo rolls, washing up liquid, some tea and coffee sachets and a small container of milk in the fridge to get us going. We bought the rest of our immediate needs from the small on-site shop near reception. There are two or three supermarkets within five minutes walk if you need to stock up on supplies. Both bedrooms and the lounge were equipped with air conditioning units complete with remote controls and ceiling fans......and you needed them. All rooms had TVs with access to all U.K. channels and very good reception.
Sunset Bay is a fairly large complex and although it has a couple of pools, both were very busy with sun loungers slotted in cheek by jowel. Towels for the beds were provided at reception and could be changed as and when required. Fortunately, our room had a terrific sun terrace/balcony with two large sun loungers a table and six chairs. It also had another internal terrace that was useful for drying off towels an airer was provided. The pool was less than a minute away so we sunbathed and then wandered to the pool if we needed to cool down.
Unfortunately, we had an encounter with a couple of cockroaches that managed to get into the apartment. Hey, it's a hot place with gardens around and we left our slatted windows open.........some bugs are a fact of life and the place generally was spotless with bins emptied every day and cleaners doing a pretty good job. We reported the fact to reception and an hour later a lady turned up to enquire about the problem and follow up on the report........well done.
Torviscas was a pleasant surprise. A two minute walk took you past the Wigan Inn where we had something to eat on our first night. The service was good and it was a hearty meal accompanied by a football match on TV.....not keen on TVs in eateries!
We ate at Gordon Ramsey's and though the service was slapdash and the food particularly forgettable, although at just under €8 a head it seemed good value........then they added on the tax and it didn't seem quite so good.
We also ate at Sebastian's near to Sunset Bay where they had live music, great service, a nice ambiance and the food was pretty good too. However, it was expensive at €60 for two of us including a carafe of very nice sangria.
Then we discovered that if we walked beyond Gordon Ramsey's there was a place on the other side of the road called São Paulo. Good service, great food, a terrific, subdued electric guitarist providing mood music and you could watch the world promenade by for about €40. I think we would make a bee line straight for São Paulo if we were in Torviscas again.
I would be happy to stay at Sunset Bay Club again especially if we had a huge balcony like H209 had.
Check the size of your balcony for sunbathing because the pools are pretty crowded.
