“Lovely hotel, shame about the sunbeds!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

We returned yesterday from a 2 week visit to the Bahia Principe Tenerife. It was our first visit and we are a family of 5 with 2 teenage children, and though there are alot of good things to report, I don't think we'll be back.

The rooms are great, loads of storage and spotlessly clean. Huge beds and pool and sea view seems to be standard. The minibar is refilled daily but only with one can of fanta, coke, lemonade, beer and a bottle of water each day (my son hid the cans in a drawer to make sure we'd get topped up if we hadn't used the day's full allowance).

The food is very good, a very varied buffet and we would highly recommend all the other restaurants especially the asian, italian and spanish ones (some at the sister hotel). If you prefer to play it safe there is a grill with burgers, chicken, pork, plus chips, pizza, salads and a pasta bar. There is alot of choice for the more adventurous too, plus a regular excellent paella option. Deserts are not fantastic, but there is always a chouce of ice creams, fruits and cakes.

From 10am the pool bar serves burgers, hot dogs, rolls, crisps, lots of drinks (including alcoholic ones). There is a juice machine (lovely smoothies), coffee machine and ice creams and slush puppies are available if you ask.

The terrace bar is very good too, with lots of serve yourself options including cava, sangria, wine. spirits and soft drinks. The bar in addition serves cocktails and beer plus chocolate milk shakes with cream, a real favourite with the kids. They also serve a very good 'Bailey's' and 'Amaretto'. I've seen earlier reviews mentioning under age drinking, but we didn't see this at all and no one seems to over do it.

The pools are lovely, and there are activities if you want to take part (not too pressurised). The pool side fashion show is very entertaining, and the kids lovely the twice daily Bahia dance. The evening entertainment mainly takes place at the sister hotel (2 minutes away), but we didn't really bother with the shows etc though I understand they are very good. They also have a bouncy castle, mini-disco, popcorn machine etc for the younger children.

The main issues we had were with the ridiculous sunbed situation (much mentioned). As a family of 5 we wanted 5 beds and 2 umbrellas, which meant setting the alarm at 6.45am each morning, finding a spot and then dragging beds and very heavy umbrellas to the desired spot.
We then had to sleep on the beds to hold them until after 8.00pm when the pool opens at which point the beds are 'safe'.
We witnessed alot of arguments between holiday makers who thought their beds had been 'stolen' as they did not stay after putting towels down. Staff were also physically threatened by a party of russian guests for removing their towels. We reported this to the management as it seemed the situation was getting out of hand. The 'bedgate' scenario improved alot in the second week of our holiday when there were slightly fewer large families.

The other issue is the shortage of tables and chairs on the terrace in the evening. It was very hard to get a table after 8pm and of course these are mainly commandeered by the smokers, which meant if you could sit outside you were often sitting in clouds of cigarette or cigar smoke. Very unpleasant for non-smokers like ourselves, but if you want to sit out on what is a lovely terrace you have to put up with it. The other option is to sit inside, which is ok but can be a bit stuffy in the evening.

Overall the hotel is lovely for a holiday away from the hustle and bustle of the main resorts. However the sunbed and terrace table battle everyday was too much like hard work and we wanted to get away from setting alarms for 2 weeks. Instead of that we were up earlier then when we get up normally for work!

Overall a good holiday, but could have been a fabulous one.

Room Tip: Corner suites looked to have bigger balconies, we were on the first floor of the green block which p...

Dear Gillian,

Thank you for sharing your great experience in Bahia Principe Tenerife with all Tripadvisor users.

It is a pleasure to know, that you enjoyed our spacious and spotlessly clean rooms, the varied buffet and that your kids loved our Bahia Principe dance.

We would like to apologize for the inconveniences you had to find 5 sunbeds and 2 umbrellas together. Only last week we received a new load of sunbeds and umbrellas to avoid this situations.

It would be a pleasure to see you again in Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts to make your holidays fabulous

I went to this hotel a couple of times and my last visit was 3 years ago. However I've stopped going as the weather wasn't satisfying and you can't fault the hotel for that.

The pool had a great scenry and plenty of entertainment to keep your family and friends happy. I found the animation team were brilliant and provided great entertainment throughout my hotel. However the rooms were a bit average for me as there was not enough space available but if you got a family room you would be very happy which I didn't.

Restuarants were spoilt for choice as there was plenty of food options available for lunch and dinner in the buffet. The Italian restuarants was fantastic and the food was very well cooked. I can also vouch for the Asian restuarant in it's sister hotel. The staff in the restuarants and bar were very polite and always kept a good standard.

They had a good variety of entertainment available for adults, teenagers and kids. However I did not appreciate playing football on a rough concrete surface and for a 4 star hotel I would expect at least an astro turf.

I've been to this place 6 times and sadly I won't be returning anytime soon as I like a chance of scenry.

This was our first visit to this hotel as a family of 5 with a young baby and I have to say it was exceptional.
Obviously there is the sunbed issue but I did get over the shock of having to get up at 6:15am to get sunbeds by the pool. I believe the hotel are trying to resolve this problem and they do remove towels from unoccupied beds at 8am which helped.
We had a fabulous junior suite room overlooking the pool and the sea. There was plenty of space and the room was cleaned every day and mini bar re stocked.
The food in the main restaurant was excellent and varied. My children can be quite fussy eaters but they always found things they liked. The Mexican and Asian restaurants were superb.
All the staff we found to be helpful and friendly.
All in all I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.

We have just returned from a weeks stay at this hotel. I echo all the comments from previous reviewers about sunbeds etc.
The main reason for my review is to suggest better labelling on the food. All the food had labels, in different languages to show what it was. However, as a vegetarian family, we couldn't always tell if some items were vegetarian or not. Some of the salads, soups etc could have had I ingredients not suitable for us, and the staff weren't always in the 'know' about whether something was suitable or not.

So my suggestion is - as you label the food anyway, could you perhaps add a (V) for vegetarian, (N) for contains nuts etc? This would make things easier for guests with some dietary restrictions.

Otherwise, a brilliant stay, which was slightly dampened by having to be very careful about what we ate.

We have always loved this hotel, started coming when our girls were only babies and we couldn't fault it in the past to be honest however arrived for our 5th visit and sadly have to say standards are slowly slipping. The sunbed situation has always been bad but this year it was truly unbelievable and spoilt our holiday. We had to set an alarm for 5.45am to get down to the pool in pitch black (only light was off other people reserving them reading kindles and laptops!) to ensure we had 4 sunbeds and a parasol! The first morning when we woke up at 8am ALL sunbeds and parasols were reserved...not the best thing to welcome you when you have two small children who want to spend all day in the pool! The hotel needs to rethink its policy on the sunbeds...they need more....was advised that only two per room allocated but most of the rooms there are junior suites occupying 4 people so you can imagine the dilemma. What about giving every room 4 vouchers for sunbeds like the pool towels...just a thought but at least you could relax a little knowing you had a bed to lie on! They did send an employee out to remove towels from unoccupied beds before 8am but the majority of the beds had people sleeping on them! I feel sorry for any single parents who would not be able to leave their children in the room alone to reserve sunbeds. Luckily myself and my husband shared the job! I overheard one woman saying she was thinking of carrying a sunbed back to her room to ensure she had one the next morning! Overall, the hotel is still beautiful..kept spotless, the lovely smiling cleaners never stop around the grounds and in the rooms and the food is amazing. However, this year we found the restaurant staff to be over worked and it was annoying to get someones attention to ask for another drink and found on more than one occasion we seemed to be rushed out. The themed restaurants are all still fantastic and were a welcome break from the main restaurant. Another downside is that the pool bar used to have a self service beer pump which was great and alleviated the queues, however this year it was behind the bar and you had to queue to get served...poor Maria who is just lovely and never stops smiling was rushed off her feet bless her from morning till night...she needs a medal! Our friends (was their 7th visit) arrived while we were there to be allocated the worst room ever....they complained and were given another room 24 hours later but spoilt the beginning of their holiday. Not the best greeting when you are loyal clients and also said they would not return, how sad. The animation team are out of this world...work their socks off and always smiling..loved each and every one of them to be honest. Aqua aerobics was a scream and I looked forward to it each day...pilates with the lovely Tess was fantastic...like having your own personal trainer..she was just fab. We did however have a fantastic holiday and our girls loved every second but myself and my husband were glad to get home for a lie-in! The Bahia is such a beautiful place and the perfect trip for a relaxing holiday but not so relaxing when you need to set an alarm to ensure you have a sunbed! We have great memories over the years at the Bahia but am very sad to say we wont be returning next year.

Thank you for sharing your experience in Bahia Principe Tenerife hotel. Feedback of our regular guests is especially valuable for us because it gives us a view along the time.

We are happy to know that you still enjoyed our friendly staff and the themed restaurants. We would like to apologise if you had some difficulties to find sunbeds. We understand that you were looking for a specific area in the solarium, next to the pool to look after your children.

We also would like to inform you that we just received a new load of sunbeds and parasols, which we just add to the pool area.

Hoping you will give us one more opportunity to serve you at Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts.

My husband and I both agree thanks to the staff and management of this hotel itwas one of our best holidays ever! let me explain why we came to this conclusion.

Location:- The hotel was located in a remote part of the island along with the sister hotel Bahia Principe Adeje.. This was not a problem to us at all on our holiday but may be a problem to some.
During the day we were able to catch taxi, courtesy bus or local bus to get around the south of the island. There were also bookable trips if you wished. we paid no more in taxis than if we were to book trips which we decided not to do on this occasion and buses wee easy to reach to get to various places. During the evening there was entertainment in both hotels the Tenerife the quieter entertainment and the Adeje the more flamboyant. to us this gave people the option ogf a quiet night if they wished.
Close by there were small beaches though not ones that you could use for sunbathing and some small shops and cafes. there was a bus stop within walking distance.

Hotel Exterior:-The building presented a Spanish village feel the Tenerife being the smaller and to us the cosiest of the two. There were sunbeds and pools in both hotels and the gardens surrounding them were beautiful and well maintained. The pools were well looked after and checked for safe swimming on a regular basis. They were manned by a life guard each day. There was some daytime entertainment based around the complex for adults and children alike and the animation team were extremely friendly and happy, chatting to guests during the day. Nearby the hotels are some small beaches but not ones you can use for sunbathing. Altough I have not witnessed it I do believe there are turtles to be seen on one of the beaches.

Hotel Interior:-The interior was beautifully decorated with grand paintings and chandaliers in the main lobbies and dining restaurants. The whole complex was immaculately kept clean and staff worked hard to maintain high standards. The size of our hotel room was a junior suite. It was extremely comfortable and was again kept to this high standard by our maid. The maid Vierena particularly went all out to make our stay welcoming and enjoyable. She often left towel origami on the bed after paying great deal of attention to cleaning our room each day. She was polite and very friendly always with a smile on her face. One in a million! Our room had a spectacular view of the sea and bay which was an added bonus for us.

Staff:- All staff went out their way to be friendly and helpful. We had reception recommend and booking a special seafood restaurant for a special occasion and it was the best seafood restaurant we had been to. They also guided us on resorts nearby and booked taxis when we needed one. Although on most occasions taxis were readily available outside the hotel. The staff here are a credit to the hotel.

Food:- The main buffet restaurant served breakfast lunch and dinner and were the best meals I have ever tasted in a hotel restaurant. It had such a choice it was impossible to taste everything but it had a wide range of meals to suit everyone. All the meals I tried were to an excellent standard thanks to the talented chefs. meals were served with red or white wine which were reasonable quality wines. There was also a snack bar at each of the hotels by the pools if you wanted snacks, drinks and ice-creams. During the day there was a table set out in the bar to help your self to a wide selection of drinks including sangrias, champagne, whisky, rum, vodka etc. as well as bar attenders making drinks to your taste. All drinks were exceptional.
Places within reach to visit:- Although we did not book trips on this occasion we did decide to book taxis to take us places. some of the places we saw and recommend and specifically recommending walking round the cost lines are Los Cristianos, parts of Playas de Las Americas,, Peurto Colon, Playa de Fanabe, Playa Del Duque, La Caletta and in the opposite direction Los Gigantes, Peurto Santiago and Playa de la Arena. You wont be able to walk all this on one day you will need several trips out but well worth seeing the beautiful rugged coastline and don't forget to take your camera!

Recommendation:- Would I recommend this hotel? I certainly would without a doubt and if I go back to Tenerife this is where I will be staying! This hotel has everything you could ask for in a hotel!

Room Tip: The best rooms were up high with a sea view

We stayed at the Bahia Principe Tenerife hotel for a week in late August, and can't praise it highly enough. For a 4* hotel in this price category, I really do doubt it could be beaten. I booked this hotel after lots of careful research on Trip Advisor, looking at several options. All of the positive comments I read about BP Tenerife held true, and many of the negative points raised either seemed trivial or non-existent to us, or were simply not an issue.

Firstly, the hotel's location could be viewed as a little isolated - it is a good 10-15 minutes in a car from the main resort area of Playa De Las Americas. We saw this as a good thing though, as the quieter area suited our tastes, and we loved the slightly wild cliff top location - great for an evening stroll! We also rented a car for when we wanted to travel further afield, and were provided with access to an excellent covered car park at the hotel.

Another major moan from several people is that there is a constant battle for sun beds around the pool areas. This didn't affect us personally, but we did on a couple of occasions observe with amusement the sight of people guarding sun beds before the sun had even risen! However, by the time we went for a dip in the pool during the mid-afternoon, we always found plenty of sun beds had been abandoned, and the pool was acceptably quiet.

BP Tenerife is a sister complex to the larger BP Costa Adeje hotel, which is an easy three minute walk down the road. You are welcome to use the facilities in both hotels, with the exception of the buffet restaurants - you must stick to your own hotel at meal times, unless you have made a reservation at one of the themed "a-la-carte" restaurants on site.
Personally, we had a slight preference for the 'infinity' swimming pool and snack bar at the Costa Adeje, but the views from the BP Tenerife are much more stunning, as it sits at a higher elevation (especially if you have a sea facing room with a terrace, as we did).

Both hotels feature gorgeous, exotic landscaping, and are spotlessly clean thanks to the highly efficient and hardworking staff. A few people have complained about the food on here, but we are at a loss as to why that would be. We found the food to be excellent quality, with plenty of variety. We also really appreciated the opportunity to have three "a la carte" experiences during the week - we selected Italian, Mexican and Asian, and all were fantastic (although the only 'a la carte' aspect is the main course - starters and desserts are still buffet style). It is certainly the best food we have eaten in an all-inclusive setting.
We were also very impressed with the drinks available as part of the all-inclusive package. In the past, we have stayed in places where the selection of inclusive drinks was dire, but not in this case! There is loads of choice, and there are even several different bottles of wine and spirits that you can pour from yourself!

We only have two criticisms - firstly, I was disappointed that there is not a basic complimentary wifi service offered. I had to pay 25 euros for a week's access, and although the connection was fine in the main lobby and bar area, it was very poor in our room. When I raised this with the lady at reception, she simply stated that they don't guarantee an excellent connection on the higher floors of the hotel (we were on the fourth floor). I expected much better from a service that I had to pay for.
Secondly, we were a little dismayed that, rather than having designated smoking areas outside, the public terraces were littered with smokers, which spoiled our enjoyment of sitting outside on the lovely warm evenings. I respect people's right to be able to smoke outside, but I also feel I have the right to smoke-free areas too.
