“great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

Just returned from tenerife after 5 nights at the arecas. After reading all the reviews we choose this hotel due to everyone saying it was quiet. We had a wonderful time the hotel is lovely and clean, rooms spacious and have everything you need. We got a room at the very far end of the hotel that wouldn't suit those less mobile but didnt cause us any trouble. The only negative I can think of was the noisy neighbours we had! Beds were comfy and minibar wasnt overly pricey.

The food was outstanding if anything there was too much choice! We ate like kings for the week. Breakfast - I counted 12 types of bread there was cereal, hot food (fresh crepes yum) fruit and more.
Dinner - I dont eat fish and there for struggle abroad usually but not here. There were several meats and salad plus fresh pizza cant fault it.it was my birthday whilst we were there and as well as a bottle of wine they had decorated our table for dinner with charger plates and a candle. We were also offered champagne!!

A special mention to Maria in the restaurant and Victor on the bar. Two of the nicest people and they clearly love their jobs. They looked after us well. Victor makes the best vodka and coke ever!

The area was great for us as it was nice and quiet but within a 10 min walk you were at the bars and shops. You can walk all the way to los christianos and further along the coast which was lovely.

The weather was very good in the afternoons only 1 day of clouds. You are 20 mins from the airport and there is a bus stop outside the hotel.

we visted the jungle park and although its quite pricey it was a great afternoon. The falconry and sealion shows were great.

overall the holiday was even better than we expected. We may well return :)

Room Tip: Ask for pool view and one of the higher floors

We are writing this from the reception and will be returning day after tomorrow to U.K. After a 11 night stay at this hotel and can only sing the praises of the whole experience we have had. Both myself and wife were treated as I would expect of a higher starred hotel, from a welcome drink whilst arriving at reception to wine and Champagne on my birthday, which must have been noted when showing my passport on arrival. The staff are the best ever experienced in any establishment and hope the management appreciate them. Food is of very high standard and those who say bland.....could not have stayed at this hotel, the choice each night is overwhelming.
Thanks to all who work in this hotel.

Not being fans of the festive season & desperate for some sun, we opted for the Riu Arecas, flying Christmas Eve, returning Jan 3rd. Our first visit to a Riu hotel, we did not know what to expect, having booked a standard room on half board basis, I had emailed about 3 weeks before traveling to request a pool view. On check-in we were delighted to have been upgraded to a suite, at no extra cost (750 euros) no.4042 on the 4th floor directly overlooking both pools & with a double balcony, what could be better?
The suite consisted of a comfortable lounge with 40" TV & mini fridge.. The bedroom had a huge bed, an identical tv, bathroom & shower plus a walk in dressing room plus patio doors from both rooms onto the balcony with 2 loungers, table & chairs. There were 24 drawers+ throughout.
Wonderful - so what was the problem? Well we didn't need the lounge & tv's, nothing on except repetitive Sky news, the bed was the most uncomfortable I have ever slept on, thin bolsters & pillows & the bath towels were a joke! We were supplied with bathrobes plus too late I discovered you can ask for a mattress topper - if only I'd known!
There is no door to the separate toilet? Toiletries are miniscule & the hair dryer handle gets too hot to use. There is no slip mat for the bath & no makeup mirror.
The hotel generally is very nice & spotlessly clean but after a quick visit to the Riu Palace I think the Arecas falls a little short in decor. incidentally the use of facilities at the Palace does not include the pools, or so we were informed in the hotel paperwork.
The Restaurant - pleasant enough but major issues with seating arrangements. The buffets are situated in the middle & run the length of the room. Tables are in 3's & 2's, very close together. If you head for the left side on entry you can find yourself eating with you back to the queues for the carvery/pasta buffets, with people looking over your shoulder - the right side is better provided those next to you are amenable. We had some very pleasant company but what if?
Finding a place to sit for breakfast presents no problem, but be careful which table you accept for the evening as it is yours for the entire stay.

The selection, quality & presentation of the food, particularly on gala nights, cannot be faulted, although eventually it becomes repetitive & I did find a lot was a little bland for my taste. The live cooking station has several chefs preparing different dishes that are then presented on large serving trays for you to help yourself - you will not get an individually cooked omelette at breakfast. The meat was always tender & the salad bar was outstanding. Sauces, dressings, yoghurts & preserves all presented in huge serving bowls - none of the individual pots here.
The drinks flowed on the 2 gala nights but are not free as this has been costed into the price of the package, even so our glasses were never empty.

Pools - both heated slightly but still too cold for us, yet plenty of people used them. Sufficient sun beds but the early morning towel brigade still present. The guests are mainly elderly, some even geriatric, but they had no problem grabbing & rearranging beds & umbrellas at the crack of dawn. Why grab a space in the sun then sit under an umbrella all day?

Ease of access - there are lifts, plus wheelchair ramps down to the pool area, however if you leave the hotel by the back gates you have to contend with about 30 steps to reach the road. Then there are another 40 steps to get to the promenade. No problem for us but could be if you have walking difficulties or a pushchair to contend with.

From the front of the hotel you can reach the supermarket on the main road & Tiggy's bar (15euros for 2 spirits)
From the back of the hotel there are a couple of little bars on the side road, large beer 1.50, small beer 1 euro - we used Taberna Lorenzo & Smugglers but gave a wide berth to Jack's Bar (check out the reviews)
The small bars & restaurants on the promenade, we found were just that little bit too far, after our evening meal at 8pm.
There were some children present who, in the main, seemed to eat at the 6pm sitting, so we had no problem. After the meal which finished around 9.30 we were then a little too late for the entertainment but I don't think we missed much.

Overall this is a quiet hotel, no pool music, animation team, games etc, highest proportion of guests being german. The quiet suited us & the area is much nicer than further towards Playa, although we could have done with a bit more life.

Highly unlikely we will return to this hotel despite the staff being some of the most pleasant & helpful we have met on our travels.

This is a nice hotel to escape the British winter located at the quieter end of Adeje with most restaurants being a 10-15 min walk into town but this suited us. The hotel itself is immaculate with large comfortable rooms. Meals were on a buffet basis and although we could not fault the quality of the food it did become a bit repetitive at times but thankfully there are plenty of restaurants in the resort so there is no shortage of alternatives. We found the hotel attracted mainly an 'older clientele' and this seemed to be reflected in the so-called evening entertainment which was dire. The bar staff however were lovely and a good laugh, also didn't know how to stick to the correct levels when pouring you a drink! The hotel has wifi but only in the Reception area; they also charge for this service which I was slightly surprised about as it's the first time I have encountered this. A place we stumbled upon almost by accident is a tiny resort only a 5 min walk in the opposite direction of Adeji called La Caleta - which is gorgeous with fantastic restaurants right by the waters edge - and not to be missed. On the whole this was a nice week in the sunshine in the middle of January but I don't think we will be returning to Tenerife as have now ticked it off the 'to do' list.

Room Tip: I'd say try and get a pool view but it's not that important if you don't - the hotel is...

WARNING
Make sure you get a pool view room, as the rooms on the two outer wings of the hotel don't have particularly good views and can be noisy, after speaking to the manager again this morning he totally agrees that it is not fair that some people get a pool view and some don't as everyone at the hotel pays the same price, there is only one room tariff for the whole hotel

We came to Riu Arecas first time ten years ago and have stayed here five times at least. This time we had very good rooms facing to pool in the ground floor – we normally prefer to face the church next to the hotel because of the view but that is shadier in winter time. The room had a good size, we were satisfied with the quality of the beds and we had cupboards enough for our stuff. Still an old-fashioned safe system and a retro TV but it works. The terrace had a hanger for your wet bath suits and for the little clothes washing we did – very practical.. The bathroom is nice with lots of marble – I think it has been renewed since our last visit. Still is the old fashioned system with a bath tub that you step into to shower. But we are young and had no trouble getting in and out. The towels are still very thin unlike the pool towels you get for outdoor use. Strange. My wife needed a makeup mirror. Cleaning spotless as in the whole hotel and a very well kept garden – that’s Riu Standard
No internet in the room – that’s not so expensive to install and I strongly recommend it – same problem in RIU Tenerife Palace by the way – seems to be Riu policy – wake up Riu to a new digital world!
I like the curved arch of the building and the grand lobby with its X-mas decorations and the very efficient staff – we arrived at noon but were given two of our rooms at once – nice touch. Very good parking by the way.
The pool area is adequate for the size of the hotel and we always fund sun beds when needed. Not very many in the pool although I find they were heated in winter time. Our grandchildren enjoyed the pool and had one of the pools to themselves most of the time.
The breakfast was good – with a special section for wholegrain and diabetic products. Lots of fresh fruit every day and a cooking station where you get eggs different styles. If you want real eggs ask for sunny side up – the omelets are all industrial product eggs.
As for the dinner you may get a little bored by Riu food after one week. We found more local type food this time – Canarian style – but fresh fish is not an option - it has been frozen. Different types of good meat though – especially the lamb. They have introduced wine by the carafe and I found more reasonable prices for wine this time.
We were not so much in the bar but we missed the entertainment with the parrots from Loro Parc– but that may by just our week.
We normally jog in the morning to la Caleta the nearby little village that by the way has good local fish restaurants.
As for bathing and swimming in the ocean we prefer the little beach just down the path that runs along the hotel. It is not a fancy beach but the locals use it and it has a good protection from the waves by the pier that stretches several hundred meters out.
We went on a successful whale watching and were very conveniently picked up by a bus at the bus stop in front of the hotel.
We definitely will come back to Riu hotels and to Riu Arecas. The service is outstanding.

Room Tip: Pool view room was very quiet

We have just returned from a weeks holiday at this hotel. Generally, we were very satisfied with everything. The hotel is at the quieter end of Adeje, set back from the sea front but our room had a sea view. There are steps that take you down to the sea. Everywhere was extremely clean and the food very good. However, the dining room lacked any ambience and was a bit 'canteen like'. You can sit where you like for breakfast and the outside area was very nice for this, but in the evenings you have the same allocated table and are very close to the neighbouring tables. The buffet was excellent though with a very good choice of dishes. Our only other complaints were that we were charged for the room safe and wi-fi was only available in the reception and again you had to pay for this. We felt it was good value for money and on this basis - would stay again.

Room Tip: This hotel is not a high-rise hotel - but if you can get a room on the top floor you will not be dis...
