“Don't stay here - Hotel Mediterraneo, Nerja !”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We visited in June 2014. This was our first visit to Spain and had hear comments re: Spains beautiful Nerja.
What a shock! The apartment was like a prison block! The room allocated was dirty and had a fishy aroma. The furniture was old, broken, ripped and stained, the curtains were hanging off the rails. We were adjacent to the lift and the clangs and bangs from the moving lift kept us awake. We were told our only option was an upgrade at an extra cost of 30 euro's. The room offered, though slightly bigger with a balcony, was also in a poor state of repair but no nasty smells. When we discovered the hob was broken and it couldn't be repaired we were given a portable, electric hob.The hob had exposed, frayed wiring which management insisted was safe to use! The electric hob and the bath had both been painted with gloss which was peeling off. The bathroom taps and the floor's grouting were thick with dirt, food from previous guest's was dried and smeared across the dinning table, kitchen cupboards were falling apart. But the most disgusting and upsetting part of the holiday was the GIANT COCKROACH on the bedroom wall above the beds!
This shouldn't be classed as cheap and basic it is a hovel!
The balcony overlooked the pool and hairs and dirt were clearly visible in all apartments water outlets, obviously this get's washed into the pool below! Even if we had wanted to use the pool we couldn't as the gate was never unlocked to let anyone in. The hotel manager was unhelpful during our stay although the man on reception duties was most apologetic and tried to help. The hotel manager has not responded to travel our agents correspondence.
I know it's nothing to do with the hotel but during the last few days of the holiday the sea was just a slick of raw sewage with toilet paper, sanitary towels and all manner of items people had flushed down the toilets! Police were kept busy moving beggars away from Nerja centre and the place seemed to have problems with it's own local drunks/alcoholics who hang around the park and slept under tree's a few feet away from the hotel. Street bin's were full and overflowing and the pavements were dirty.
We have had travelled far and wide and stayed in all sorts of accomodation but we would consider this the worst hotel and holiday we have ever edured!

Carmen and her husband also the gentleman who looked after the building couldn't have been more helpful. It is not five star, but for what we paid was very clean and suited our needs. Would go back. Also has nice little pool, and very pleasant. Near beaches and cafes and shops lovely holiday did not want to leave. Will be going back

Room Tip: get one with a balcony over the pool

Comfortable beds, hot showers and an electric hob that worked but apartment could do with redecorating. However , for the price, our eight day stay was most enjoyable, made more so by helpful , friendly staff. The A.M. Are close enough to beach,Nerja bars and restaurants yet far enough away to preclude any late night noise.
Ideal venue for a last minute budget holiday.

Apartments can only be described as basic but good. Room was clean upon arrival.Booked a studio and were allocated a room on the first floor at the rear and which had a balcony. Didn't much like the view of the car park so we asked if there was a room with a view available. A very helpful and friendly receptionist called Carmen showed us a couple of rooms and we chose room 303 on the top floor which overlooked the street facing South and having a nice view of the sea and mountains in the distance. Although the upgrade cost us ten euros per night we were pleased we had done the deal. All members of staff we came in contact with were friendly and helpful.
The location is very good for accessing the beach and restaurants and there are 2 supermarkets close by.
Overall we thought the apartments were adequate although as has been mentioned in other reviews, the decoration, furniture and equipment has seen better days. Also the air conditioning was not reliable although I think they were working on it during our stay.
There is no maid service other than to change towels once during the week
If you want good basic no frills accommodation this will suit.

Stayed in these apartments beginning of august. After reading other reviews I was a bit apprehensive. Apartments however are fantastic value for money. Clean and tidy. Will DEFFO stay here again. Beds were very comfortable and rooms very roomy. Had a full size fridge

It is cheap and cheerful and is possibly the best value accommodation in the otherwise exclusive - mostly Spanish clientele - seaside town of Nerja.

Without doubt, the Mediterraneo Apartments are in need of some TLC, showing signs of wear and tear, such as peeling enamel in the bathroom and the occasional rough repair, such as a nailed on table leg.

That said, the location is brilliant, being just 100m from one of the town’s best beaches, Playa Torticilla and is just a short walk to the famous Balcon de Europa, (along Cala Malaga). There, well-heeled hotel clients are paying out three or even four times more than those with their somewhat bijou accommodation at The Mediterraneo.

But the staff are lovely, the AC works well (needed in summer), there’s plenty of hot water; many rooms have a balcony (though getting one may require a firm, but polite approach when they are at full capacity).

The rooms are thoroughly cleaned, but after check-in you are on your own and clients must empty their own rubbish and also supply essentials after arrival and sheets are only changed weekly.

The swimming pool is very clean, but so small as to mean there will be no arguments over loungers (there is no where to put them) but then its two minutes to the beach...so why bother? Cooking is down to a two ring hob and a very useful microwave, but that’s ample with so many good places to eat and drink on the doorstep.

Of course Nerja is simply fabulous as a location with too many highlights to mention here. But don’t miss a Spanish Cafe bar on the street at the end of the walkway opposite called Nicos (I think). Join the locals there and get great (substantial) tapas free with very low priced drinks.

Bamboo costs more, but is recommended and is located at the seafront at the bottom of the terrace behind where the horse-drawn carriages await customers, (they are good value too at €25 per carriage ride).

Stroll to the Balcon and enjoy the fantastic scenery as you dine or drink in the several establishments overlooking the beautiful Calahonda Beach and enjoy Papagayos right on the beach (the raised ‘VIP area’ is best) and do make sure to check out The Boatyard.

Turn right from The Mediteranneo and at the end of the road bear left, then right from the end of the main promenade onto Playa Plaza (across the dry river bed). Walk along a rough dirt track for 10 minutes (but allow 20 minutes coming back!) to where a rustic shack built on a real working boatyard has been transformed into what is possibly the best live entertainment venue around. Don’t miss it and say ‘Hi’ to Paco the proprietor from us!

The wee village of Maro, to the east of Nerja has a fantastic festival in September too and while religious in nature is also an excuse for a major party. Nerja itself has a much bigger affair in October, based partially on Tuttie Fruit Square, near The Mediteraneo and also near the Balcon de Europa.

We have been to Nerja three times and will return, and as long as guests at The Mediterraneo know they are NOT paying for four star and shouldn't expect to receive it, they will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Wifi works best in reception and in most rooms up to the second floor. Room 202 is quiet with a ni...

The apartments are in a excellent location for the beaches and the Balcon, shops and restaurants. We were lucky and were given an apartment with a balcony. We were surprised to find that the apartments are not provided with toilet rolls or cleaned during your stay and we had to wash all the cutlery, pots and glasses before we used them. We had to ask for clean towels and sheets after a week as they had not been changed. The courtyard could have been lovely but the water feature was empty and there were no tables and chairs. The local supermarkets sell everything you need at very reasonable prices and local cafés and restaurants were good value for money. We stayed for 2 weeks in July 2014.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony as some rooms only had Juliet windows and no outside space.
