“Great value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2014

We wanted a clean, comfortable and quiet hotel for a weeks walking and this hotel was perfect. Antonio the manager was a mine of information on local walking, the restaurant was open until 9 which meant plenty of time for Tapas in the town. Happy hour 6-7pm perfect. Food was ok, lots of choice but for the amount we paid we could not complain.
Thank you

We arrived about nine in the evening and were pleased to discover that the evening meal was still being served. although our room was small, we enjoyed our stay here. The staff were always friendly and helpful, especially the chef who cooked wonderful steaks, squid and other dishes. Not too near the seafront, but handy for the bus station and walks to Maro / mountains (either along the road or the paths near the sugar mill).

Prices for drinks in the restaurant were reasonable and like most hotels in spain, you can always save an unfinished bottle of wine to the next evening.

Room Tip: try and avoid a room directly above the bar (although entertainment usually finished by 11pm)

I enjoyed a holiday here March 2013 . I travel alone and found this hotel perfect for me apart from the noise at night from the entertainment . My room was above it .
The food was good, the staff very nice - very relaxing.
On my return I went on the Thomson online site as I wanted to go back later in the year. I searched every week ahead for a year. To no avail . No holidays at all for singles. I expect to pay a supplement but now despite averaging 4/5 holidays a year via the Thomson site it would appear for this hotel and many others I am just not welcome as a lone traveller. Mind you as the room was so small it much be a real squeeze for two.

Basic pleasant 3 star hotel, situated on the outskirts of Nerja with approximate steady pleasant twenty minute down hill walk to the town centre & Balcon de Europa, no shortage of local gym & sports activities, twenty minute scenic walk to Maro small village on the outskirts of nerja and the world renowned Nerja Caves set in spectacular mountain range that overlooks Nerja, that has to be on everyone's 1st visit.

Famous Burriana Beach is in easy reach, car parking is plentiful but one needs to be early, restaurants are situated along the front with shops in the background.

It had been my 3rd visit to this hotel from the past 20 years it has always retained its unique Spanish character, the staff are always willing to please and are always courteous,
The accommodation is basic with TV, kept clean on a daily basis, luxury it isn't.

Buffet style dining area is large and spacious, variety of cuisine is always on the menu, one criticism to much of a free for all during dining times.

Entertaiment laid on through out the week Typical British style entertaiment with couple evenings of Flamenco singing and dancing.

Parking at the hotel is limited as is all of Nerja due to its popularity and progress, there is a bus service stops in proximity of the hotel.

Nerja has progressed is no longer a small town, has been geared for the tourists so dont expect a quaint Spanish village they exist in imagination only.

Very clean but you cannot get away from the smell of cigarette smoke. Also, on cabaret night, it is noisy.

Parking is limited on the street and the hotel is a long way from the center of town and too far to walk. When we asked, as was reported, the friendly staff, they were very dismissive to both me, and later, my wife. They have no detailed maps of the core and the one they have is useless. The same perfunctory attitude prevailed when we queried about the wifi as it is very slow and disconnects often.

Breakfast is very UK with lots of grease. We opted for the more healthy European style meal.

The beds are "very firm" which is OK for me, but you only get one pillow which could leave to some tense moments with one's partner.

Room Tip: be certain you are not on street side and away from the cabaret.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

Just back from a one week stay, i have done a few reviews on tripadvisor so will stick to my usual format.
Firstly was it value for money? Did i enjoy it? and would i return?
It was value for money but only because we got a good deal £222 each half board including flights and transfers.(this was just about acceptable for the overall experience)
I did enjoy Nerja and would return, but there are some issues with the hotel.
Based on the overall experience i would not use this particular hotel again.
Ok i will now give some details of what i think are the relevant issues, firstly i really really wanted to enjoy my stay at this hotel, as based on recent reviews it sounded great, but there were to many little things that overall means i cannot recommend this hotel.
On arrival at 9 ish in the evening we were greeted by a very professional young gentleman who directed us straight to the restaurant as it was about to close, after a rushed meal we were given our room card, the room was overlooking the pool and was quite disappointing , the balcony was tiny, more of a juliet style, but my main issue was the quality of the room it was definitely one star not three very basic and dated more akin to a good hostel than a three star, but i must also point out very clean, as was the entire hotel throughout the whole week.On the first night we hardly got any sleep due to what i can only describe as a noise similar to a door constantly blowing back and forward in the wind, i checked everywhere even in the corridors in the early hours but there was nothing left open. The noise appeared to be coming from above, but we were top floor. On further examination the next day the only thing we could see was a large air con unit on the roof directly above the room, This noise was enough to keep us awake most of the night and believe me i am not a light sleeper. So the next day we asked to be moved rooms(this is only the second time in over 30 years of traveling i have felt the need to do this. The receptionist the next morning was really not particularly pleasant and basically did not appear to believe us however she did offer us another room eventually. but after that she seemed to take the huff with us (went back the next day as my door card stopped working the lady seen me approach desk made eye contact then turned and went into the back office, whilst on the telephone, i stood there for at least 6 or seven minutes, and eventually had to go to the office door and ask her to come out.). The room we were moved to was at the front of the hotel, with a bigger balcony but overall smaller, the room was the same low standard and also very cheap green looking,it always felt damp, and the windows were steamed up every morning, i will put up some photos. This side of the hotel the rooms never get the sun. On speaking to other guests the rooms in the opposite wing seem to have been renovated and although small they said they were very nice so it appears a bit of a room lottery. There are a variety of rooms with varying styles and sizes of balconys, so just be aware your balcony could be large, small or almost unusable if this matters to you, one even opened directly onto pool terrace so no balcony.
There is a conservatory, lounge area and cocktail bar type area, but they are in fact all the one big area connecting to each other, however the area is very nice and rustic and is of a three star quality, bar prices for alcohol were quite reasonable but soft drinks and water were overpriced, there is a supermarket across the road (water 20 cents rather than 2 euros). There is a happy hour between 5.30 and 6.30 50% off all drinks. The entertainment was a mixed bag 2 nights nothing, two nights(sun and thur the chap was excellent) and two nights of what can only be described as the worst singer i have seen perform, although he was a good entertainer, just could not hold a note, or at least the same ones together.
Outside pool and sundeck were fantastic very clean and modern, but be aware quite enclosed so if like we had you have a loud mouth he rather spoils it for the whole area, not the hotels fault in any way, we had one and you could literally watch everyone disappear after 5 to 10 minutes of his loud antics.Note for families this is not really suitable for kids , to small an area and the hotel is definitely for the over 60,s so you would feel very self conscious.
Dining room and food, dining room is down two flights of stairs and is of the enclosed in type with high level windows, quite dated and definitely not three star quality, chairs seemed to be of various heights?. Food was, to be completely fair to the chef on the whole very well cooked and tasty(apart from the lamb dish one evening which was just chopped bone), however there was a fairly limited range, always involving pork, turkey and some variety of fish, it was fine for the money i paid but not for the brochure price, breakfast was pretty grim not a great variety and a problem at all service times was that when something ran out it was not replaced quickly or at all, cornflakes, beans and turkey are just a few examples. I have a hospitality background so always look at this side of things and try to be fair in my comments. The quality of what the chef produced was very good and very tasty but needs more variety. Waiting and bar staff i have to be honest were pretty much ignorant and none comunitive, but on watching around it seemed very much if your face fitted and you were a regular then you were given a different standard of service. I always tip every single time and during my entire stay this was only recognised and thanked once, the rest of the time it was not even acknowledged.
i know this sounds like a moaning session but it is not it is an accurate description of my stay. The hotel seems very well suited to the more mature guests and seems to welcome them the most, my honest opinion is that with some more attention to customer service and some upgrading of the rooms this hotel could be exceptional, but it is not there yet, so overall based entirely on my experiences i would not return.
Accessibility - the hotel is at the top of a hill and according to google locators is not actually nerja but muro.Within 15 minutes is a lovely beach area with bars and restaurants, come out of the hotel turn right and wander down through the streets and you will find it or else turn left walk down the hill to the first roundabout then turn left and follow the road all the way to the beach, but beware of the steep hill you have to come back up, this is not suitable for the infirm, every direction from the hotel involves hills mainly coming back, so the entire area is not suitable for the infirm, unless you use taxis. When at the beach if you want to go into nerja then instead of coming back up the hill take the ramp you will see on the hill on the left hand side and this will take you up to the start of the town.(looking from the sea)
From the hotel to the start of the town is at least 15 to 20 minutes but a pleasant walk (uphill again on the return journey), but you can be at least another 20 mins to the far end of the town. The town of nerja itself is stunning every street, has a hidden bar or restaurant with a simply superb variety, there seemed to be an abundance of, menus of the day, all around 10 euros and what a variety. Also if you want to try the tapas experience then this is the place, it would be impossible to try direct you just simply come out of the hotel turn left continue about a mile or so through three roundabouts at the third head left down one of the streets and get yourself lost, you will thoroughly enjoy it, the streets are beautiful and every now and again at the sea front you will find a set of stairs leading down to a small cove.I REALLY CANNOT RECOMEND NERJA ENOUGH, not quite sure if its for young families though more of a couples of all ages type place. If you get the time take the bus to Frigliano up in the hills (1 euro on the bus). The bus station is 2 large laybys on each side of the road past the third roundabout. Just watch the bus times at the weekends as there are fewer buses on so when we went on the Saturday it was standing room only on the way back. As soon as you get of the bus there is a road train doing a village tour the gentleman was excellent with great local knowledge and will stop at various points to allow you to take photographs.
S o to sum up the hotel is not for me at the moment, but read all the reviews and make your own mind up, it is by no means the worst i have ever stayed in but the overall experience was disappointing for us.
One final thing worth mentioning if in the main town, next to the hotel riu monica is a restaurant "The Curry House"try the menu of the day 9.95 euros probably one of the best indian meals i have ever had.

Room Tip: Rooms to the front do not get the sun, ask for a refurbished room, if the balcony is important to yo...

Recently returned from a one week's stay, booked at very short notice to escape the English weather. This hotel is very well run and is in an excellent location, being only a 15 min walk into the town of Nerja which was bustling and everything was open which surprised me. Our room was facing the road which was a little noisy but not too bad, the balcony was a bit disappointing as only room for 2 chairs, and as it was facing the road you would not want to sit there. The bed was very comfortable, the t.v. did show all the English channels at the beginning of the week, but half way through BBC1 and BBC2 disappeared. This was due to the removal of the satellite in southern Spain and any day the remaining 2 English channels would disappear. The hotel was making arrangments to have another system put in, but be aware if the t.v. is important to you.

The food was fine but not too inspiring, fresh vegetables would have been nice instead of frozen, and the breakfast cereals could have been better, there being only 2 choices each day. There was always fresh fruit available. Having to queue for the tea/coffee machine and toasters every day was a bit of a pain but again, not too bad. If you can pack a travel kettle I would as we found the coffees at the bar a bit expensive as we bought cheaper coffees in Nerja.

We caught the bus to Frigliana which only cost 1 euro and is a must place to visit as it is very pretty. We also caught the bus to Malaga which took around an hour and cost 9 euros each for the return trip and there is so much to see there.

We often had a coffee or beer outside the Hotel Balcon de Europa which is in a prime position in Nerja overlooking the ocean, and for a 4 star hotel we found the drinks and snacks excellent value and would thoroughly recommend. All in all, Club Nerja is excellent value for money.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool.
