“excellent hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2014

I hav just returned from the Riu Monica. This is the 3rd time i have stayed in this hotel in 18month and as usual it did not dissapoint. The hotel is lovely and the staff are exceptional. They will go out of their way to ensure you are happy with everything and they will help you with anything you need.
The hotel is very clean and the meals are really nice with a good choice on offer.
I am 46years old and a solo traveller and i appreciate the piece and quiet this hotel offers, every time. Other reveiws have mentioned it is geared towards older travellers and i would agree, but that is why i love this hotel. Its my perfect retreat away from the hussle and bustle of life. Can't wait for my next visit
The hotel is in a great spot in Nerja. Close to the main centre. About a 10 min stroll away and there are bars and shops along the way. Nerja is a very quaint little place with lots of little winding streets that are quite easy to get lost in till you get your bearings, but this adds to its charm.
I really can't find anything negative to say about Nerja or the Riu Monica.

Room Tip: The hotel is a kind of T shape. All rooms have a sea view. The rooms along the back all face the sea...

A great hotel with just a few minor niggles. First I know we dont come on holiday to watch t,v, but when the weather is not good it would be nice to be able to watch the odd show. At present only have bbc 24 hr. news and a second rate entertainment channel shown on old style sets. I also think tea/coffee making facilities in the room would be a good idea. The food at the hotel is of good quality and plentiful and always something can be found from a great range of soups hot food, salads, and desserts. The staff are all very friendly and helpful from top management/ reception/waiters and cleaners. the hotel should rightly be proud of the staff who are a major asset. The hotel could not be better situated being right on the seafront at Torreclla beach and a short walk to the Balcon de Europe. Nerja is a delight and I would love to return, and yes I would like to say at the Riu Monica again.

Shame about the weather- not much to do when it is raining- pool cold outside- the sea even colder- check the buses- need to validate tickets before you get on even if you have booked an open return- went to Almenacar- still very quiet and more Spanish and Malaga- very nice city- plenty to see but no signposts where you need the station or buses-
Also in Nerja bought some cigarettes from DIBETABACO- we paid by credit card and she asked if we wanted to pay euros or sterling- asked for sterling and she said rate was 1.16 but when we got home realised it was 1.14 so beware-cost £10 more- said no commission but she lied about the rate- this could happen in any shop so ask for euros to be safe and you can work out what you paid- Other than that had great time in the Flamenco bar and the hotel was good- but did not do any spicy food- mainly catered for older Brits who like plain food!

Room Tip: Up-graded to get sea view room and def worth it- you either are on left for sun in ,morning or right...

You will not be disappointed with the Monica if you are happy with a traditional Spanish 4* resort hotel. The public areas and rooms are spacious and well kept if a little old fashioned. The service, as has been said by all, is excellent. The whole hotel however does seem to be targeted towards the over 50s...which is not necessarily a bad thing!

Breakfast is excellent and the range of food for dinner is also good. The only downsides are the two fixed sittings, at 6pm or 7.45pm, and the cheaper 'cuts' of meat for the main courses...but with the variety on offer I suppose they have to control costs somehow.

It is a surprise to be given room keys and safe keys in these days of swipe cards. The room safes are also a vintage before 'laptop safes' and I don't think you could fit anything more than a tablet or smaller size laptop in them. The wifi is free in the public lobby but is restricted to 90 minutes per day and you have to use this in one session. Having said this, across the road are a really good choice of supermarkets and cafes. The cafes all have wifi signs displayed.

The rooms have mini-bars and oddly no tea/coffee making facilities. We read this comment before going and therefore took a travel kettle and mugs...sorted.

The hotel entertainment is decidedly average but that's not a problem with all the local bars and only a 10 minute walk to the resort centre. It is also only a 10/15 minute walk to the bus station (a kiosk) so it is really easy and cheap (1euro each way) to do your own outings to the caves (great) or Frigiliana, up in the hills (delightful).

All in all this is a good quality, good value hotel which is well located...but not modern in facilities or personality. We thoroughly enjoyed our week there.

Room Tip: Higher rooms have the best views. Malaga side have the afternoon sun, whilst the Nerja side looks ov...

Great stay in March 2014, together with warm weather. Large well appointed public rooms. Went on a half board basis and good selection of food for all tastes at both breakfast and dinner.

Room very clean and comfortable and had a limited sea view on third floor. View was great with a reasonable view of the sea. Our room was the Malaga side of Hotel and caught the sun in late afternoon / evening which was a bonus.

Staff very friendly and attentive. Bars opposite the hotel and within easy walking distance for pre dinner and after dinner drinks.

Entertainment each evening but cannot comment as did not stay for the shows.

Easy walk to the old town or Nerja, with plenty of bars and restaurants.

Room Tip: If returning I would ask for room on Malaga side of Hotel to catch the sun on balcony in late aftern...

worth a visit as is the village frigliarna,go to local irish bar annies great atmosphere in there only
a pitching wedge away from hotel all in all we had a great week here and would highly vouch
for the monica

Room Tip: anything above third floor facing gibraltar
