“Good all round”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

Not much we could fault at this hotel, everyone works hard to make your stay as good as possible, the hotel is spotless, food good service excellent, location less than 10 minutes walk to the balcon and on the beach a good choice we will return.

RIU Hotels do not disappoint and this one has all you need for a comfortable short or long stay. We were there in late February and the view from our room was of high rolling waves in the Mediterranean. Inside the hotel it was cosy; there were plenty of nooks inside to relax and read or play on the computer or visit with friends. The food buffets provided choice and the service was lovely. We were there on my birthday and without our saying anything, staff placed a bucket of champagne at our dinner table. It was a nice treat. I am ambulating with a walker and was given a room with a spacious bathroom. We also enjoyed the pool, exercise room and massage service. I think families would enjoy this hotel in summer as it is right on the promenade with the beach on one side and the hotel pool on the other. Strolling on the promenade, taking photos, and shopping in the neighborhood are all possibilities from this hotel. We have been many times to Nerja so did not go into the main village but it holds attractions for those who have time and the interest, particularly for a wider array of shops and restaurants.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the garden may be quieter than those overlooking the pool and from the balcony you...

From start to finish this was a 5 star holiday. From the moment we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by friendly and polite reception staff offering us a glass of juice or champagne. The reception area was spotless and beautiful even offering free WiFi.

We were given a huge room on the 5th floor as there were 3 of us sharing. It had everything you needed; fridge, large balcony with sea view, plenty of wardrobe space and even ITV and BBC on the TV! The one and only fault would be that the hairdryer wasn’t very powerful, but that's me being picky!

The meals were served buffet style with the evening meal being served in 2 sittings. The food was amazing, with so much variety and the chefs were very friendly. The dining room staff were quick to serve drinks and clear plates from the table.

One thing that surprised us most was when both the hotel Director, Francisco and deputy Director, Daniel, would spend their time during breakfast and evening meal chatting to guests. Daniel would work his way round the tables taking time to get to know guests and even remembering names. He had a keen eye for detail and would be often seen straightening up bottles and plates, a sign that he is going to do well in the hospitality industry.

All in all, this was a holiday to remember, even if the sun only made an appearance twice. There was plenty to explore in the local area, which was picturesque and very traditional. We also made the most of the local buses and had a day shopping in Malaga.

I cannot wait to visit the Riu Monica again in the future and have already recommended it to friends and family.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor with sea view.

Great hotel, shame about the weather. Staff looked after us and didn't have a problem.
Remember to take a travel kettle as there is no tea making service in the rooms.
Thomson rep Vinny very helpful but sadly moves on shortly.
We were particually impressed by the new assistant manager Daniel. Great asset to the hotel. Sadly, chef Jose hurt his back and was off sick, we missed him.
Made full use of the daily free 90 minute wi-fi in the lobby area. Switched on folk take 2 devices.
Definitely worth a visit.

This was the second visit to this hotel and yet again the all round quality of the rooms, restaurant, an service were excellent. All the staff encountered could not do enough to help us and this made for a superb restful stay.

Room Tip: Romans above 2nd floor give a better view

This was our first visit to Nerja, for my wife & I, and it will not be our last! Being a fairly positive person, for a change though, I will start with the negatives - Now I have done that let's get on with the good points. The Riu Monica is without doubt one of the best run hotels I have ever staid in. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with a very professional and friendly reception staff that couldn't do enough for you, explaining everything you may need. Our room on the 5th floor was spotless , if maybe a little dated but this some how added to it's charm. The cleanliness of the rest of the hotel was a match to anything we have ever staid in!
Restaurant for meals was a buffet arrangement, and the quality of the food for mass catering was first rate, and breakfast was simply sublime.
All the staff were simply exceptional, and the new Deputy Manager Daniel will go along way in the Hotel Business simply because Excellence is the only word he uses in his approach to his hotel.
I must just also mention Thomsons, in my opinion on this trip they had also raised their game, from arriving at the airport, to returning home, everything went like clockwork.
Superb holiday .

Room Tip: Try for a higher floor for the better views.

We arrived and were greeted with a glass of Cava and a very efficient check-in system - by name so that you could sit and wait until you were called rather than have to stand and queue. Our room was spacious with a side sea view which gave the sun on the balcony from late morning until evening. This was very valuable for our stay as the weather was rather windy with two days of rain but when the sun did come out we had it and shelter from the wind. These rooms are on the 3rd floor upwards between 38 and 50 approximately. Our room was 342. The other good thing about the room was that there were real coat hangers!!!! Those usual hotel ones drive me crazy!
The staff were all very helpful at all times, the rooms were spotless, the bar staff were great as were the dining room and reception staff.
All dining was self service but staff were around if there were any problems and you were greeted at the door for each meal. A disadvantage to us was the two sitting system in the evening as we would have preferred to eat when WE were ready rather than when THEY were ready. Having said that the food was excellent with plenty of choice. you are given a set table for the week so you don't have to search for one. Breakfast was open seating and we had no problem, there were plenty of tables though I heard people, who went down later, complaining that they couldn't find a table. On two days we needed early breakfast. That was cold only and some things hadn't been sorted in time like fruit juice and bread.
Outside there was only one small pool so in the summer i imagine that it would be very crowded although there is a beach just outside the back gate. Inside there is a reasonable size indoor pool and a small gym.
Beyond the hotel there were plenty of shops, bars and restaurants and it was a pleasant walk to the other parts of the town. A visit to the cave is well worth the effort. It's about 10 minutes walk to the bus station and a short trip to the cave. A truly amazing walk through the sections of the cave that are open to the public. There is the largest column in the world in there too.

We went to Granada and the Alhambra Palace as we had never been and Nerja is one of the closest resorts. We went on an official trip because for places like that we think it's worth paying the price to get a good guide.

One other tip about the hotel. There is free wifi for 90 continuous minutes per day per device in the lobby and bar area. so take more than one device and you can have longer! Once you leave the area with wifi you have lost the rest of your 90 minutes.

Room Tip: As mentioned above, for sun on the balcony even numbers 38 to 50 on floors 3 and above.
