“GREAT HOTEL IN GREAT LOCATION”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

Just returned from 11 nights at this hotel (our 4th visit).
From the minute you arrive you are made to feel welcome by the exceleent and helpfull staff on reception.
The rooms are nicely and adequatly furnished, most with limited but decent views of the sea.
Adequate plug sockets. hairdryer, air-con plus very quiet additional ceiling fan. We found the beds to be comfortable with extra bedding if required on request.Reasonably priced mini-bar and ample wardrobe space. Shortly after arrival in room a phone call to ask if you were happy with your room (nice touch). Nice change to have hot water at all times. People complain about the towels in the review but we didnt find it an issue.
Room and balcony with 2 chairs and table kept very clean as was the rest of the hotel.
The high variety and quality of food could not be faulted. It was absolutely superb.
Table for dinner (2 sittings) allocated on entry to the restaurant on the first night after which you are given the option to change table or times The managent keep a close eye on all aspects of the hotel as can be seen by their very regular visible presence.
Free wi-fi for one and a half hours continuous use available in reception area plus use of 2 x PCs at cost of 1e for 12 mins or 2e for 30 mins.. Ample sun-beds etc for sunbathing . Nice but cold swimming pools plus indoor pool and gym /spa area.
We found nice place to have a drink or bite to eat at lunchtime situated as you leave the hotel beach gate on Low ground floor level sea front 20 yds to the right called COBOS. A more limited but excellent sandwich/snack menu with hosts, Michelle and Agnes is available at the SHIP directly opposite the hotel. Its a great atmosphere and beer/large brandies @2.5euros.
There are 2 supermarkets just to the left of the hotel the cheaper and better being the 2nd one (not the Jamaica).
Overall I would highly recommmend this hotel and the lovely resort of Nerja for an enjoyable holiday.
The only downside on this occasion was the weather(beginning of November) 9 out 0f 11 days of rain!!.(unusual for that time of year)

Room Tip: Rooms to the east (odd numbers) have morning sun and those to the west (even numbers) aftternoon sun...

We stayed at the Riu Monica Hotel for our honeymoon. Upon arrival we were greeted with a glass of champagne and on arrival to our room there was a bottle of champagne waiting for us! All the staff were very polite, on reception, in the bar area and in the restaurant area. All staff would sort things out in an instant.

Food was GREAT! Choice in the morning of cooked breakfast, cereals, pancakes, churros, toast, teas, coffees and plenty more options. In the evening there was a buffet style with a different flavour soup everyday, plenty of salad options and the cooked meats which were also different everyday. There were also the usual chips and pizza for those fussy eaters. You do have to pay for drinks as with all half board holidays. There is an amazing selection of desserts!

Nerja itself is a quiet safe place with plenty of little side streets full of shops. Nerja cave is well worth a visit - but definately dont think you can walk from the hotel easily! The beach is literally down the steps. Lots of sunbeds 4 euros each for the day. We did go to the Market on the Tuesday but were a little dissapointed, think this was due to end of season. Thomsons also offer day excursions that look really interesting but make sure you take plenty of money for these or pay in advance.

The beds were average for comfiness but most beds in hotels are similar and they do provide extra pillows if requested. Towels changed regularly, bathroom cleaned daily and bed made. Cleaning staff were brilliant always did a great job. TV in room with 3-4 english channels for those rainy days. We were on floor 4 and had a lovely view on the balcony.

Pool outside was freezing, indoor pool similar but does feel warmer after being in it for a while. Gym is also on the way to the pool.

Entertainment provided in the evening, professional singers 3-4 nights of the week which were very similar in style. Flamenco dancing show was excellent and also the magic show was great.

Overall we recommend this hotel highly but maybe not so for kids.

Room Tip: Higher levels get better views

returned home and immeadiately booked again for next year.
We seemed to be the only first timers there, now I know why.
Beware though suits couples rather than families with young children.
great position, friendly staff, fantastic food and wonderful resort

Room Tip: sorry, thats for me to know

Just spent fourteen nights at this hotel chose this hotel after reading reviews , first the good points
Staff very polite and friendly except for two members who did not enter in to the spirit of things
One female member of the bar staff who ignored some customers but fussed over others ,also a member of the reception team her downfall not a smile but reasonable, the cleaning staff kept everything very clean pool area also well kept along with the gardens .. I think some minor refurbishment is required reception area our room also could have done with a lick of paint, the beds are reasonable but could be improved, towels also could be a better quality and maybe tea making equipment ,.may bring the hotel up to a true four star status ,every thing said the hotel is worth visiting

Room Tip: Rooms facing west catch the sun all afternoon rooms higher up also have good views

We have just returned from a week at the Monica.
Previous reports suggesting that the bedding and towels require changing are correct, but it's not a major issue. The hotel furnishings and decoration are 1990's in style and under normal circumstances, the place would be more than ready for a refresh to these areas but in the current economic climate hoteliers don't have the money to spend.
The only issue we had was that it was impossible to have a quiet, intimate dinner in the restaurant. This was for two reasons; all dining is buffet style, which generates pandemonium and the tables are jammed up together so there is absolutely no way an intimate and private dinner could be enjoyed. It was also irritating that Dinner was provided without a single drink being included - not even a glass of water, so we decided to eat out on four evenings despite staying on a half board basis and there are some really good quality, inexpensive restaurants within strolling distance.

The staff, particularly on Reception were excellent, the food was of good quality and we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in Nerja, so the Monica, with a few reservations, is doing a good job.

This was a late holiday with the intent on relaxing in some comfort and hopefully some pleasant weather. The hotel was well positioned with its own exit to the promenade and beach. The rooms and indeed the hotel throughout were spotless and had some class. For those less active there were several lifts to all floors. The meals at breakfast and dinner were on a buffet basis with waiter service for clearance etc. One would find it hard to improve on the variety and quality of the food provided. During the day there were a number of optional activities, including rifle shooting and darts, whilst the indoor pool and gymnasium were on hand for those more active guests. Each evening entertainment was provided in the main lounge bar area - by either a professional musician/singer or a show by flamenco dancers or a magician. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.
Nerja itself was a beautiful place to stay with lots of bars and restaurants including tapas bars where one could relax and 'watch the world go by'.

Room Tip: I would personally favour floors 2 or above with at least partial sea view. Although the rooms were...

I have just rertuned from a half-term break in the Riu Monica with my teenage daughter. Overall I would recommend the hotel, with the following observations:
- Location - quiet & off the main roads. Easy, flat 10-15 minute walk into centre of Nerja, 15-20 minutes walk slightly uphill to bus station for buses to Nerja caves, Malaga etc. Right across the road from 5 or 6 bars and tapas restaurants (I would particularly recommend La Fabrica) and 2 supermarkets. Shingly public beach with some sunbeds/shades immediately behind the hotel
- Staff in all departments are welcoming & friendly - reception, bar, cleaning - all were more than happy to help and deal with any concerns
- Food - plentiful, wide variety and nice quality of hot & cold dishes at both breakfast and lunch
- Hotel public areas were clean and comfortable; furnishings looking a bit dated, but did notice that some lobby furniture was being replaced while we were there
- Pools - outdoor pool far too cold to use unless you are a very hardy outdoors type, plenty of comfortable sunbeds/sun umbrellas; indoor pool was also too cold to use, a pity considering the time of year means that the weather is sometimes changeable and the indoor pool would have been a nice respite
- Rooms - spacious and comfortable but showing signs of wear in some places. By far the biggest drawback were the beds - VERY hard mattresses and plastic sheeting underneath the bedding made it very sticky even in cooler October/November weather.
- Entertainment - daytime entertainent finished at the end of October, not sure if the 'Animation' organisor was finished for the winter, or just until a replacement could be found. Nightly evening entertainment varied from a magician to a crooner singer to a flamenco dance trio - all reasonably good and worth staying in the bar for.

My message to the management would be to improve on 2 priorities - the heating of indoor and/or outdoor pools and more comfortable beds (maybe investing in some soft mattress toppers)

Room Tip: odd number rooms have sun in the morning, even number rooms have sun in the afternoon/evening
