We had been twice before, once staying at a villa, once at the Riu Monica.
This time we stayed at the Balcon De Europa and were very pleased that we did. Having read other reviews, we wanted to ensure an option to specify the type of room we wanted and found
an agency which would allow this. So our review is based on the junior suite which we occupied on the fourth floor, with a balcony directly above the small beach and looking out to the sea beyond. The only disadvantage of this for some would be if you don`t like the constant sounds of the waves breaking below when the balcony window is open.
The fourth floor is where the restaurant is situated. It`s a sort of upside down hotel, where the lowest floor is at beach level, whereas one enters from street level at floor six.
What we liked were:
the provision of adequate seating in the room (some hotels only provide one chair):
the very unusual number of British channels available on the good quality wall mounted flat screen TV (no doubt influenced by the unusually high proportion of British visitors - the highest
we have ever experienced in a foreign hotel);
the partitioned balconies outside, so the balcony becomes a private extension of the room;
the provision of a bath, shower and bidet;
being in the room when the cleaner visited we witnessed a standard and thoroughness of cleaning surpassing anything previously seen;
the room safe, which was self programmable and unlike some others, did not require a separate fee to be paid;
the unusually good lighting in the room.
The staff were universally friendly, helpful and competent.
We liked that breakfast extended to 10.30 and the availability and quality of food was excellent.
There was a good choice of food available for evening meals.
The hotel is at the edge of a pedestrianned area, so that no vehicular direct access to the front
of the hotel is possible. This is something to be aware of and could be a problem for any physically handicapped visitors. We had a taxi transfer from Malaga airport and were unfortunate in having an unhelpful driver who took us to an underground car park, then telling us that the hotel is "just 50 metres down there" and leaving us to take our own luggage to the hotel. (It was probably about 250 metres). We found the hotel by enquiring the direction to it from the fortunately adjacent tourist office. We were much better served on departure by the collecting taxi driver parking nearer and then walking to the hotel to collect us and our luggage.
In summary, thoroughly recommended. Just beware of possible arrival difficulty.
