“More for the elderly”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2012

The Yaramar is in need of a complete overhaul. Some areas of the hotel are looking very tired indeed.
It caters mainly for elderly people many of whom have visited the hotel on numerous occasions. Some are very quick to send their reviews saying how wonderful the Hotel is but of course they have nothing to compare it with.
Our Superior room was a let down----particularly the bathroom. A chipped floor -- loose bath grab rail and tap---Missing hooks on shower screen---poor standard sealant around bath-- Extreme difficulty controlling water temperature of shower. These are just a few problem areas of a very disappointing standard of a so called superior room.
Food. Very little variety I`m afraid. This applied to both breakfast and evening meals. We also found on many occasions the food was only lukewarm. Regrettably we also had some difficulty finding clean cups and plates which only added to our concerns.
Thankfully the train station is within easy walking distance from the hotel. We used it on a number of occasions and have to say this was considered to be the best part of our stay in Fuengirola.
On a more positive note ---The staff were all very friendly courteous and helpful.
Would we ever stay at The Hotel again? No

Room Tip: Try and get a high room to avoid noise from traffic on the road that runs alongside the hotel

My Wife and I have just spent a week at the Yaramar. We found the food choice very good always something to tempt us.The weather was excellent for the time of year, some days 21'.
We enjoyed the happy hours at different times in various bars. The Patio Bar whose happy hour is between 8pm and 9pm was very busy,so if you wanted a seat you had to arrive earlier. We spent most evenings in the disco bar in the basement enjoying the quizes and entertainment, pity there were no tribute bands during our stay, but the acts such as comedians and Thomson team were enjoyable. This was our first visit but it will not be our last.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

My wife and I have just spent two weeks at the Yaramar (11 to 25 November 2012). This was a return visit as we had spent 2 weeks there at an almost identical time in 2010.

I left a detailed review on 24 November 2010 (entitled “Be realistic and you won’t be disappointed”). Because most of that review still holds good, I don’t intend to do another detailed review.

What this review does is highlight some things which were better or worse this time round or some things that have not changed much but could and should be improved. Overall, however, the Yaramar is still a pretty decent place to stay and you should have a good holiday there. I guess it must be doing something right because so many of its guests (mostly British pensioners in the Winter season) return year after year!

Room: the room condition was slightly better than last time. Whilst still not pristine (eg the blackout curtain did not meet in the middle and had holes in), some attempts had clearly been made to repair damaged furniture, to better fix wall lights etc. The TV was much better. The old CRT had gone to be replaced with a smart flat screen TV with crystal clear digital reception with a good selection of UK TV channels. The room safe was newer but very small – it was not big enough to take a Notebook for example. The bed was as bad as before – it creaked and groaned and I could hear (and feel) springs as I moved on it.

Food: the ‘dining experience’ was about the same. While the food quality and variety was fine, to be frank it was really like eating in a cafeteria with tablecloths. You still had to queue on occasions to get in. The food was still of variable temperature. Things still often ran out (food, glasses, plates, cutlery etc) and you usually had to point this out to the staff. The labelling/identification of the food was patchy. They still frequently provided hot plates for cold food and visa versa. And they still started making up the tables around you for breakfast (from about 8.30pm each evening) or for dinner (from about 9.30am each morning) even though the restaurant was still open for another hour or so. It surely can’t be too difficult to improve things in this area. It requires better management of the dining room and kitchen staff.

Evening entertainment: the entertainment that takes place in the basement (Aquarium) bar was better than before. The Thomson entertainment staff element had been scaled down and there were more professional shows. In fact, counting the resident duo as professionals, we had 10 professional shows (comedians, Spanish dancers, singers) in 14 days. Having said that, the one man cabaret performed by the Thomson rep (Barry John) was really good. I’m still humming Human by the Killers!

I conclude this review by repeating the tile of the review I left in 2010 - be realistic and you won’t be disappointed.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the pool get the most sun. This is important in the winter months when it woul...

Our first visit to Fuengarola. Didn't like the town itself BUT, this Hotel is really something special. Modern, clean, wonderful bed, food out of this world. many different meats including carving joints and so many types of fish cooked inmany different ways the choice was amazing.. The evening entertainment was very good too. We sang, danced, and laughed every night. The happy hours were so numerous and it really helped our pockets. We will definatley be back again

Room Tip: high floors over the pool get more afternoon sun

This is quite a comfortable hotel but as I've mentioned before, the communal areas seem to have undergone some refurbishment, but the bedrooms are looking tired. The lighting in the bedrooms is quite low - the men probably won't have noticed this but for us ladies this is quite important. If you have neighbours who wear heels, then you will hear quite a lot of 'clip clopping' going on as the rooms are tiled, but the biggest negative of this (our second visit), is the size and age of the bed. It's a standard 4'6" double, which is quite small these days and the springs where so noisy if either one of us even thought about moving, then we were constantly waking each other up during the nighttime. I don't think I had an undisturbed sleep the whole time. The weather from 1st - 11th November was abysmal with only 3 sunny days out of 11, and many guests didn't venture out of the hotel, although the Thomson Gold team put on extra quizzes and a film some afternoons to help pass the time. The train to Malaga came in very handy to pass away an interesting day and it's nearby, cheap and reliable. The bus stop is just a block back from the hotel and buses are cheap and frequent. The Myramar indoor shopping centre has a 12 screen cinema with some english version films showing and - a new find for us - there is a theatre in the centre of Fuengirola which puts on several productions a year. We were lucky enough to coincide with a production of Calendar Girls which was really excellent and if you fancy a different night out - give this a try. Book as soon as you arrive though as they are very well supported. All in all this is a hotel catering for the more mature guest and they cater very well for them.

Room Tip: If you don't mind heights, then the higher floors give an amazing view right across to Gibraltar...

This was our honeymoon present from my parents, a two-week stay half-board in the Hotel Yaramar.

From the moment you set foot in the entrance hall you can see the hotel is of a very high standard: the reception staff and concierge are very efficient checking in and moving your luggage to your room.

The food is standard fare for large-scale Spanish hotels: a buffet-style system which works well in so far as you're able to take as much as you want and as long as you want. It does feel slightly "works cafeteria" style however, and with us being there for a fortnight the temptation was to have a number of meals out - particularly as some night the food, whilst all edible, was not the most inspiring.

The entertainment staff were, in the main, very competent and worked hard through the day to keep the residents entertained. The availability of quiz sheets each day, and numerous pool-side competitions meant that there were plenty of things to do if desired, although the majority seemed to prefer soaking up the sun pool-side with a drink and a book.

The evening entertainment was professional, with some good performers across a range of entertainment genres: singers, comedians, and tribute acts were plentiful. The only disappointment was the lack of an encore from any act, and likewise the entertainment staff themselves seemed to make a bee-line for the door when the show finished almost as fast as the audience - there was no encouragement from them for people to stay for the disco or another drink: a shame as one of the top entertainers in the venue is the bar manager (who seemed to have aspirations to be an entertainer judging by the range of costumes and props appearing from the back room of the bar!)

The hotel itself is in a prime location in the centre of the resort, with it's own beach on the opposite side of the road. There is also an outdoor pool and spa for those who like swimming, which is located on the first floor so is private from passers-by on the street (although I was slightly concerned about the pool and that amount of water being located immediately above the restaurant area!)

Room Tip: If you can get one of the corner rooms on the front-left side of the hotel, they have a complete gla...

Just returned from a week at the Yaramar. This was our 9th stay at this hotel and as you can guess we love it. We always ask for the same room (overlooking the pool and beach) and the staff always let us have it. Food is very good ( but needs to be hotter.) Plenty of seating areas. Staff very friendly and helpful and the hotel is spotlessly clean. Can't wait to return.
