“Fantastic location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2012

We are a family of 2 adults and a 13 year old girl and have just returned from the PYR, staying in a 2/3 bed studio on a self catering basis. As with all holidays there are good and bad points but I think it is important to remember that you are not at home, so for example an area described as a kitchenette will not compare to what you are used to.
I will try and be as constructive and honest with my review as possible, starting from when we arrived. We had been advised by another trip advisor reviewer to take the train from Malaga airport direct to Fuengirola, and what a good call, the train (renfe) station is attached to the airport, walk out of arrivals and follow the signs for the train , as you enter the station you have to purchase tickets via a very easy to use machine ( press english instrucions ) 2.50 euros each single fare, trains every 20 minutes, on the hour, 20 past and 20 to, carriages very modern and air conditioned. Just be aware that the train gets very busy as many locals use it, making about 10 short stops between airport and fuengirola.(total journey time about 35 minutes on train )First train about 5.30 in morning and last 1 about 11 at night but you can check on renfe website if you need specific times.
When you get off it is approx 5 minute walk to PYR , the roads in fuengirola town tend to be a bit grid-like, so head for seafront and turn left ! look out for a cafe bar called the carousel and the PYR entrance is directly opposite.
Check in was smooth and easy, shown to our room ( 119 ) on first floor, which was spacious and had a sea view, had a problem with aircon not working but was fixed immediately ( within 1 minute of speaking to reception !! ) it was just a problem with the remote control for the aircon.
First morning we ate out but we did use the kitchen quite a bit throughout our stay, and as many reviews have already pointed out the equipment is sparse, if you really can't live without a cup of tea or coffee in the morning then either take a travel kettle ( about a tenner from Argos ) or walk down to the PYR cafe ( which we didn't actually use so I couldn't tell you what its like !! )or visit one of the umpteen pavement cafes a stones throw from the hotel.
There is a large modern supermarket ( mercadona ) about 8-10 minutes walk from hotel with everything you could need for self catering ( walk down the street DIRECTLY opposite the hotel entrance and it is on the left, you cannot miss it ) There is also a smaller supermarket ( openday) about 25 paces from hotel entrance, handy but a little more expensive. We tended to have breafast and some evening meals in our room, nothing too fancy, but cereal, toast and fruit is well within the kitchen's capabilities, the supermarket sells cooked chickens, salad and crusty bread, so a few evenings we just did this and sat out on our terrace watching the world go by !
If you don't fancy cooking or preparing food in your room then you could do a lot worse than visit the Carousel cafe, opposite the hotel, it is english run, very friendly and a good selection of food all day. We ate elsewhere also, but this place was just so handy.
The rooms were always clean and fresh towels every day, the one thing we noticed is on some days the '' do not enter'' sign was on our door, if this is on all day housekeeping will not enter the room, we did not put the sign on so I think some kids staying as guests were having a bit of a laugh, but not a big deal really, just check your room door as you leave in the morning.
During the day we either used the excellent pool or one of the local beaches, as others have mentioned the non reserving of sunbeds around the pool is good, meaning you will always get them, the toilets/showers around the pool were excellent and we always found them to be clean, if I had to pick a fault it would be that there did not seem to be enough sunshades, having said that there are always some areas around the pool that are in shade at some part of the day, so not really a problem.
The beaches will all charge 4.50 euros for a sunbed, as a lot of Spanish people use Fuengirola as their summer holiday destination they tend to bring their own sunshades. chairs etc, not really practical for us so we just paid , the bonus being we were not crowded out.
One day there were a few small jellyfish around the shore line, the next day the tide must have shifted because we didn't encounter them again.
My wife and daughter enjoyed browsing the many clothes shops along the beach strip, when taking a break from sunbathing, they both said they would buy clothes from these shops rather than take them from this country as they were very reasoinably priced.
We visited the Bioparc (zoo ) one day , well worth a visit, but I will say when you arrive at Malaga airport people thrust leaflets into your hand, please keep them as one of them gave us 6.50 euros EACH off the Bioparc admission, so in our case nearly 20 euros !!
We also hired a car for one day and took a trip to Gibraltar, quite a drive and probably not for the faint-hearted !! but glad we did it, getting across the border took over 2 hours, bit of a drag, but went up the rock via cable car and got up close and personal with the barbary monkeys up there, very ,very hot day though, so take plenty of drinks. If you do go park in Morrisons ( signposted the superstore ) carpark, is free. It says 3 hours max and for customers use but we were nearer 5 hours and no problems. a lot faster getting out of Gibraltar, just try to avoid the toll roads ( from fuengirola there are 2 roads the A7 and the AP7 to Gibraltar, the AP7 is a toll road, 6.95 euros and there are 2 toll points to Gibraltar, so I would stay on the A7, very clearly signposted all the way )
Each evening we would walk from the hotel either along the front in both directions or into the old town part, most people just seemed to do this at night, all the shops/booths are open if you do want to buy anything, the street sellers will sell you literally anything, but a polite no will stop them bothering you. The same street sellers also populate the beaches during the day, again a 'no' will stop them, but some days it seems there are hundreds of them, however this did not put us off the beach.
As other reviewers have mentioned there are quite a few nightclubs in the vicinity of the PYR, I think only 1 night the noise woke either me or the wife up at around 04.30, just means you have a bit of a nap later in the day.
We also visited Benalmedina and Torremolinos on the aforementioned train, again good to suss out other potential holiday sites.

All in all the weather was fantastic, location superb, when we ate out found it to be good value for money, and we will go back in the future, we are very much '' glass half full '' people, and will make the best of things, if you go with an open mind and don't stress yourself out with the fact that there are only 3 spoons in the kitchen drawer or that the wardrobe only has 7 hangers then you will enjoy it. Just remember, this is not an expensive hotel to stay at by Fuengirola standards, we heard of another English family who were staying at the Las Palmeras ( next door ) who had paid 3 grand for 3 of them , all inclusive, and were eating out every day !!

We stayed in a studio apartment ( 507) for a week from 6th August 2010.
On first impressions the reception and lounge area appeared very nice.
The studio was exactly as it appeared in the professional photos and we were very pleased with the huge size of it and the lovely clean tiled bathroom equipped with shampoo, shower gel, comb and shoe shines!
Upon arrival there was a terrible smell of bleach which quickly turned into a smell of sewage. I complained 3 times and NO action was taken.
We turned off the barely cooling air-con as I remembered reading on Tripadvisor that this was a problem for someone and the smell did disappear but the heat was unbearable at night time.
At this time I demanded a new room but the hotel was totally full.
On the day before departure we were given room 315. The air-con worked without any smell. If we had been given this room initially we would have been totally satisfied except for the fact that the cleaning was minimal and would have given a 4 rating.
One day the cleaner just changed the towels and hosed down the bath - not even a sweep of the floor. However, I do not mention this a being a big deal.

I would point out that at no time was any apology offered by the reception staff.

I found the reception staff no help and they were quite condescending. When I asked for some change to us the internet the staff member just said "No. Next" - very rude.

Room Tip: Whatever you do don't stay in room 507 before the air-con is fixed. I would ask for a room on t...

just got back from a 7 night stay . rooms are very spacious and modern although i would not describe it as self catering , more room only as the kitchenette is inadequate . no kettle , very basic utensils most of them really old and well worn . no room to put anything in the kitchen so cooking is impossible . the fridge was old and rusty too , we just stored our water in there . the hotel is right next to a main road and there is a nightclub opposite ....hence NO SLEEP ! we were kept awake until half 6 in the morning on friday , saturday , sunday and wednesday night , hundreds of people screaming , shouting , cars bibbing their horn . on the third night i awoke to find the biggest cockroach in the middle of the room (1.30am ) . i tried ringing reception and there was no reply so i had to go down and tell them in my pyjamas ! they gave us a key to a smaller room which we thought was ok . next morning we went back to our original room and we could tell cleaners had been in because we could smell polish . the guy on reception said the cockroach must have come in through the balcony door and wouldnt believe me when i said it was closed the whole time . we went out for the day and when we came back the cleaners had been back in and left the balcony door wide open and there was another cockroach . again i went down and reported it and also told them it was the cleaner that left the door open . i was not happy as this is also a security breach , anybody could have climbed in and robbed us . finally they gave us another room for the rest of our stay . they said we had been upgraded , well we had an extra bedroom where the lights didnt work if you can call that an upgrade ! after moving all of our belongings we went to bed . whilst we were out the next day the cleaners came in and again left the balcony door wide open ! i reported this to reception and they said it wouldnt happen again . it happened every day ...good job we paid the 12 euro to hire the safe and luckily there were no more cockroaches . the reception staff speak little english but were helpful . the barman in the hotel was extremely rude , no please or thankyou and he more or less threw the change back at me !!! the pool bar had a lady working there and my god we could not believe what we saw her do . she was preparing a hot dog for a man and accidentally dropped the sausage on the floor . she checked to see if the man was looking (which he wasnt) and picked up the sausage with the spatula and put it back on the bun . she simply handed it over to him without saying a word and took his money yuk yuk yuk . the ladies toilets at the pool were never cleaned during the day and very rarely had toilet paper . my son found a dead cockroach actually in the mens toilet . the hotel says it has a games room , which in fact is a room with 3 computers and 2 drinks machines . no games at all , which was very disappointing for my son . you are not allowed any inflatables or balls in the pool which is not good when you have children . to be honest we couldnt wait to come home .

Room Tip: rooms above the entrance are best , the nighclub is on the other side .

the best thing about the PYR the policy for the sunbeds - no leaving your towel to reserve. when you go for lunch you take your things with you and get another sunbed on your return. a policy which we very much appreciated - all hotels should do this. the pool is great. room - impecably clean,; beds - impecable.; re sheets and towels - excellent,. reception very pleasant and helpful. would highly recommend. this hotel..

Room Tip: rooms on south side quieter - overlooking the pool.

I stayed here in July 2012 with 2 friends and was very happy with the hotel. For the price we paid we couldn't have asked for any more, the staff were friendly, the hotel was clean with nice spacious communal areas and swimming pool, the room was spacious and clean and the hotel has a good sea front location in Fuengirola.

my mother sister and i stayed at the Pyr for 10 nights.when booking i requested a high floor and pool or sea view and oh boy did we get it.On checking in i was told that i had a pool view as requested room 1029 had it all a wonderful view of the marina and beyond to the left a pool view down below and the mountains to the right so we got to see some great sunsets.
The room itself was very spacious and had everything you would need to make light meals. The bathroom was also a good size with a nice selection of shampoo bath gel soap combs and also a couple of shoe shines.
The cleaning was of a very high standard with fresh towels daily and sheets every other day.
The overall cleaning of the hotel was of the same standard and also the pool area and the gardens. All the staff work very hard to make your stay an enjoyable one which ours was so a big thank you to all at the Pyr.The food and drink at both the pool and the main was very good with a nice selection of tapas or the usual chips, toasties, hotdogs and burgers and the drinks were such good value for money with happy hour every evening from 6 to 7 so that made us very happy!!! lol.i would recommend this hotel to anybody and will look forward to returning on our next visit to fuengirola.Well done all at the Pyr.

Room Tip: The higher floors give the best views.

We have been regular guests in PYR for many, many years. In fact from 1983 till 2002. This year (June 29th – July 8th) it was time to come back, as per special request from our daughter Rosanne, who was 8 years old at the time and now, 10 years later was longing to go back. Let me tell you all readers: it was certainly worthwile! I had my doubts having read some of the negative reviews on TA but at the same time I was pretty sure it could not be that bad as some people want you to believe.
There is a lot to say in favour of Apartamentos Hotel Pyr. Bear in mind that this is a somewhat older building in Fuengirola where many, many guests have stayed over the years and were very satisfied.
But as time went by, the building underwent a vigorous renovation, around 2003 if I am correct, and they managed to turn this into a very nice and comfortable holiday resort, that can certainly meet with other, sometimes more recent apartment-hotels in the area.

Personally I was very surprised to enter 'our' former studio on the 9th floor, how beautiful and clean it looked, nice wall decorations, comfortable beds and a splendid bathroom with courtesy shampoo, hair comb and other items. However it must be said that the sofa-bed was rather tough to open… We were very happy with the possibility of hiring a safe in our apartment for a very, very reasonable price (€ 1,80 per day).
The kitchenette itself does offer ample items and we thought this was certainly enough for a summer holiday for a family of three. One should realise that you are in a country with other habits and customs than you are probably used to in comparison to your home country elsewhere in Europe or wherever you come from. So maybe some items may be lacking but instead of making a big fuss about it, why not solve it and make the best of it (the Open Day supermarket is right across, or Baly supermarket one street further down, close to the Candil restaurant).
The entrance to the wonderful swimming pool and well maintained garden is certainly one of the highlights since the renovation: whereas in the past it was frequented by many people from elsewhere (and I mean no guests from Pyr), it is now only excessible for Pyr-guests by using a code giving access to the garden and pool. Well done, this improvement!!! Which can also be said about the super-sized parasols.

Staff in reception and also the cleaning lady (camarera) on our floor are still the same polite Pyr-employees that I can remember from the past and are friendly to all guests involved. I guess you can tell by now: we liked it a lot!!! And will certainly be back as soon as we can :-)

Muchas gracias y hasta luego!

Room Tip: Ask if they have a location for you available on the swimming pool side...
