“Quirky but fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

Some people have slated this hotel but i feel most of there reviews are nit picking. It is true that the hotel has some fault's and the rooms although quirky in design are a bit floored in application. That said they are spacious and everything worked in our's, the fact that it is an adult hotel is a bonus no kids running around makes it a good place to relax.
The Spa is good and the infinity pool on the roof is very nice, I was a litle unsure about the stark and arty interior on arival but this grew on me. There are complaints on here about the staff and they are sadly justified, also the food dosent realy warant the hotels four star rating, that said there is plenty of it and its tasty enough. Overall i would say it is worth staying here if you want to find fault with the hotel there are things you can pick up on, that said for the money and for a relaxing break i found it fine.

We stayed at this hotel in June 2013. Was very disappointed with it. In our opinion it was not worthy of 4 stars. The food was of a poor quality each evening. The hotel was out on a limb, no bars etc anywhere near it or shops. Would not recommend or return again.

Just returned from a 3 night stay at this hotel and was very impressed. Very modern/contempory Hotel and loved all the art work throughout the public spaces. The infinity bar and pool area were fantastic and the food was very good quality. I had read some reviews about the staff not being friendly but I found the opposite. Reception staff were very helpful and Mauri, Laura and David who looked after us in the infinity bar, restaurant and lobby bar were excellent and made us feel very welcome. I will definitely return to this hotel!!!!

Room Tip: Rooms are open plan so best for couples - maybe not so private unless you are good freinds.

I stayed at the Higueron in Sept. I firstly seen the holiday on secret escapes. I cut the the cost by £200 doing it my way. Ryanair air flight then booked the hotel same deal 5 days half board through travel Republic. The hotel is very modern and fashionable. Its built on a hill over looking the sea. walking down the hill isn't that bad at all but thought of hiking back is a No No. Especially after a few drinks. A taxi will cost €8 back up the hill. Furnigola is a lovely peaceful place in September. Ive heard it's hetic in july August. The beaches are big and beautiful. In some parts of the sea, you can walk out and not drop off a ledge. Top Tip.... malaga airport has a train station below it. That train will take you to Furnigola and beyond for €2.50 the train comes every 20mins. But you would still have to walk up the hill or get a taxi to the Hotel. The food in the hotel isn't that bad at all. Buffet style but if your prepared to wait the chef will cook you fresh meat/fish. The restaurant is lit with this blue lighting which gives a chilled feel. Takes a while to get use to. Same in the toilets and rooms. Ladies be aware of this as it's hard to see when applying make up. Other than that the rooms are awesome with open plan design.

Wonderful contemporary designed & furnished hotel. It is half way up the hillside on a great complex. The roof bar & pool were fantastic but piped music on all the time throughout the hotel.

I would recommend a hire car to comfortably get about, either from the airport although there is a car rental shop at the top of the hill near the supermarket - small car 85Euro for 3 days as opposed to the In Hotel Avis one which was at the time E150 for the same!

Nearest supermarket (only one around) at the top of the hill, which again is very steep! The little train which ferries people goes up and down the very, very steep hills throughout the day but not on Monday afternoon or Tuesdays all day and the last one is about 5.45pm. Taxis from bottom of hill seemed to be 7Euros one way and a Taxi into Fuengirola E12, however at the bottom of the hill is an excellent train service that goes from Fuengirola to Malaga and a day return is only about 6 Euro. Buy a ticket on the station - really easy to do!

All the staff however were extremely helpful and friendly.
Not sure if because it was mid November, but all the same few staff seemed to be working all the shifts day & night. Staffing levels seemed extremely lean and possibly as a consequence, service was often very slow and disorganised in the Rolo Restaurant unless a senior staff member providing direction also with a very limited choice fixed menu for those on a Half Board basis.

At Dinner on the final night, held in the normal self serve buffet breakfast area, only One Waiter was in attendance to serve drinks etc. At that Dinner and at Breakfast, the Chef who would cook eggs/omelettes etc seemed to rarely be at his work station and often diners would wait and just give up - even if staff were asked several times.
Fantastic sport facilities but the indoor full sized pool is laned off into 4 and excellent, but the stone is dark throughout and felt rather enclosing, unlike the rest of the wonderful light of the rest of the hotel. If you wish to use any of the pool facilities/jacuzzi etc in the spa area, you have to pay about E31 for about 2 hours.

All the outdoor pools I am sure would be great to use in warmer parts of the year, but all the outdoor pools are unheated.
Also rather disappointing to other hotels of a similar 4*standard I have visited, no robes/slippers or complimentary water and No hot drink making facilities whatsoever. Fully stocked mini bar fridges.

Outdoor sports facilities of tennis and paddle tennis always very busy but floodlit and excellent. Few grumbles herein but overall a great time was had!!

Room Tip: Disappointed that although we had specifically requested a room with a double bed, the beds were two...

We stayed for 3 nights at the end of September and thought this was a great place for a short break. The hotel is very modern with a cool vibe and a fairly young and sporty clientele. It is also very quiet as most people are engaged in the range of sporting activities available and there is no entertainment at night. This makes for a nice relaxing break. There are five pools (two indoor and three outdoor) so, whilst the roof top chill out pool is very nice, there is no need to fight for a seat there as there are plenty of other options (we fell about laughing watching people spend half an hour going up and down in the lift just to sit up there while we went and claimed a comfy sofa bed by a lower pool).
The rooms are also funky, if basic in that the wardrobe is just a curtained off cupboard and there is minimal additional furnishing - one chair. There are though, chairs on the balcony which seemed quite large and there is a very big TV (many thanks to the earlier reviewer who explained how to change the language so that programmes dubbed into Spanish could be watched in English). The bathroom arrangement is unusual (although in our experience is becoming more common in 'hip' hotels) ie the bath is in the room with the toilet, shower and basin screened off from the rest of the room. This does make the room really only suitable for couples or very, very close friends!
We thought the food was more than adequate. It is all buffet with a great choice of salads and accompaniments. The soups were really nice and while some of the precooked offerings looked a bit over-cooked but there is a choice of fish and meat which is freshly grilled in front of you. The deserts were also much better than you get normally on this type of buffet. Dinner is served right up to 10pm and the food is replenished so no need to rush in when it opens. The wine was also priced very reasonably and if you don't finish it you can ask for it to be saved for the next meal. The best place to sit is on the terrace if weather permits although it does get busy but no one seems to linger there that long.
There was also a good choice for breakfast - fruit, cereals, cooked food, pastries, etc. There was only one egg chef who also produced great pancakes, and worked unbelievably hard and with great organisation so the wait was never that long. Perhaps the one bug bear is having to queue each time you want a coffee refill.
The staff all work fantastically hard and I can only assume that they must all be well looked after because they were unfailingly cheerful and helpful.
Finally the location. You can use the little Disneyesque train to get to the local station or to the supermarket. There is nowhere you can walk to as it is on a very steep hill so this is not a hotel to use if you want to go to the beach every day or tour the area. On a short break though there is really no need to go anywhere because this is a really super place to stay.

Modern hotel, with great rooms and facilities.

Food buffet is good if a little too 'samey' after a few nights.

Infinity Pool on the roof is excellent, and the other pools are of a high standard.

Only negatives are distance (more gradient of the hill! to get to the beach).

Room Tip: The suites are only slightly more expensive and well worth the extra.
