“Beautiful Hotel but....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2011

We booked this Hotel because of the Spa facilities and the Jacuzzi bath in the Junior Suite. Although this was a family holiday our main reason for our trip was to relax. The hotel is in a great location and very clean but 1) The Spa was out of order for the entire duration of our stay. 2) The swimming pool was dirty over the weekend period 3) The Jacuzzi bath in our room was not working either 4) The hot tap on the bath/shower came off in my hand the first time I went to use it 5) The water in the shower went from scoulding hot to ice cold and back again in the blink of an eye. Not good for adults using it let alone our children. 6) Getting hot water to make the bottles up for our baby seemed to be asking too much for some of the staff. When these problems were mentioned to the staff our comments where met with a shrug of the shoulders. My wife and I work in the tourist industry and realise that it's the attention to detail that makes peoples holiday, sadly to say there appears to be a lack of attention at this Hotel

Despite the maze of narrow streets in this lovely medieval town this hotel was easy to find just off the main road into the town and parking in the streets nearby was not a problem. It was just a very short walk from all the sights.
We paid a little extra for a 'junior suite' but it was well worth it as we had a very large room with a view out to the cathedral. The room furnishings were in the antique style but the bathroom was bang up to date with all mod. cons. including a jacuzzi bath!
Reception staff were very welcoming and gave lots of advice regarding sights and restaurants. Breakfast was good if a little bizarre as coffee was dispensed individually from a bar but never taken to a table as they just announced it was ready to collect even though the staff were standing around making a lot of noise chatting to themselves!
This is an excellent base to explore surrounding places like Ubeda and Cazorla as it is so easy to get back onto the main road system from the hotel.

Room Tip: Go for a Junior Suite:

We stayed two nights, to see Ubeda and Baeza, which have remarkable Renaissance buildings. La Casona del Arco is a tastefully decorated, immaculate, well-situated choice of lodging. People at the desk speak English well and were very helpful. Buffet breakfast was ample: fruit, cheese, jamon, pastry, bread, yogurt, cereal. Wifi too.

I found this hotel when I wandered around Baeza.
I didn' t use the spa, but i did look at the treament list. There was a small pool and a delightful restaurant and sitting room.
The room was comfortable, although I never did work out how to use the tv (there were 2 remote controls).
It was just a few minutes walk to wander around the town itself and to find lots of local restaurants and bars.

A well appointed hotel with clean bedrooms and nice public areas.
On our visit, however, there were some problems:
Firstly, the swimming pool was dirty and not cleaned during the duration of our stay.
Secondly, the management was unbelievably stingy with their coffee, nibbles etc. during both the evening and at breakfast time. We were told that each additional coffee at breakfast had to be paid for on top of the ‘all in’ breakfast. The manager said that this was because he used better coffee than the British were used to drinking, and it cost him a lot of money to provide extra coffees!
Thirdly, the hotel paid-staff stood around in the breakfast room smoking and gossiping whilst we were eating our breakfast. This may be common practice in the street-bars of Spain but it is not acceptable in a tourist-quality hotel.
In conclusion, it was not a pleasant stay. The staff was friendly but seemed cowed by their manager.

We totally agree with the previous comments - the quality of the hotel was a real surprise for this little town - a very classy establishment. Conveniently located, just inside the gates of the old town, the hotel exceeded our expectations. Our room was quiet, confortable and clean, with a terrific shower! - our best yet in Spain. Some surprising features of the hotel - a very well appointed salon and a marvellous pool, with a very comfortable, sun drenched patio sitting area - just the spot for drinks at the end of the day. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Parking is possible in the surrounding streets.
Stay - you will not be disappointed.
