“expensive day out”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2012

We had planned a day out in the mountains while spending a week in central Malaga and Antequera looked worth a visit after reading previous reviews and doing some reading. We thus booked, in advance, some train tickets using the RENFE website - all very easy. What we didn't realise, and hadn't seen reported anywhere, was that Antequera station is 17km from the town, and in the middle of nowhere. So we arrived at 9.30 am, with a return trip booked for 2.15pm ( the next train back as it turned out ), and the problem of getting to the town. There are no buses, so we had to take one of the 2 taxis and it cost us 22 euros for the 15 minute journey ( 3 times as much as the trainfare )
By this time we were pretty cheesed off so that may be why we didn't think much of the town anyway. We found the bus station and went back to Malaga on the bus, which was a far more interesting journey since the train had spent most of the journey in tunnels through the mountains
MORAL - don't travel to Antequera on the train - use the bus, its much cheaper and more scenic.

“Worth Seeing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2012

The Town Hall used to belong to a convent of the Franciscans, but it was expropriated by the government in 1836. The building was acquired in 1845 by the local government for use as the town hall. The façade is new, with a Neo-Baroque style. The cloisters and the impressive staircase are original. The assembly hall has a very good portrait of King Juan Carlos when he was young and the Hall of Kings has portraits of King Alfonso XII and his first wife.
