“Beautiful hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

We stayed here on the first night of our honeymoon, on the romantic package, which included champagne and strawberries in the room, late check out, complimentary drink on arrival and breakfast, 120 Euros. We had a lovey big room overlooking the courtyard, enormous very comfortable double bed, the most wonderful soft rug (wierd thing to comment maybe, but it really was!), and very quite and comfortable. Only slight downers, the AC unit in the room (individually controlled) was not the quietest, but not intrusive, and the shower could have been a power shower, or at least a decent showerhead. Nice drink in the bar on arrival, and great fun exploring the old part of the hotel, which was full of nooks and crannies. Great breakfast the next day, and wow, the pool was amazing, we were the first ones in the next morning and it was just heaven, surrounded by palms, great views over the fortress walls, lots of loungers and nice little pool bar too, we made good use of our late checkout to stay there all morning before we continued on to Porto. For us it was an excellent start to the honeymoon, relaxing and luxurious, we would return without a doubt, just wonderful!

We found this hotel by coincidence and decided to have lunch there. Although it seems rather up-market, our lunch was incredibly good value for money. The pool also looked nice. We were surprised the restaurant was almost empty - don`t be put off by it!

A really elegantly restored convent with it's own private chapel. The staff were charming and helpful. The town of Chaves does not really have much to offer so one night here is plenty.
We ate in the restaurant, which was beautifully decorated however, dinner was a bit ordinary. Originally when we asked for the wine list the waitress told us that they didn't do that any more.We nearly died of apoplexy before we realised that she had misunderstood as her English was poor!

It is a very nice hotel, situated near the city center. It is an ancient fortress, adapted to a modern hotel. It is very well decorated and the staff is very friendly. The surroundings are very nice and it is easy and safe to walk around the hotel.
Unfortunately I was there for business, not for pleasure, so I could not enjoy the amenities of the hotel, such as the outdoor swimming pool.
The room where I staid (nº 14), was very small and the view from the room was over the restaurant roof. Other rooms had different and better views, so be aware when booking! Also, it was not very "business friendly", as it was not easy to work there, as I had to do: not prepared for connecting computers, not a place where one can sit and write a text easily! But the wi-fi is free and works well.

Room Tip: Try to book a room with a view!

The hotel was perfectly managed, clean neat and quiet. And the restaurant, although too formal for my taste, was great too.We were served a complimentary platter of melon, serrano ham and cheese, which would almost have been enough for a meal on its own. Our main course was duck breast with citrus cream sauce for two, with boiled potatoes we requested rather than fried, and fresh green beans. Next time Iºll ask for no salt. It would have been enough for four people and only cost around 18 Euros for two. The hotel room too was a bargain, 75 Euros including a huge buffet breakfast. We are recommending both the hotel and restaurant very highly.

Room Tip: There are three levels of rooms, and since we asked to see all, the only difference we saw was the s...

Lovely hotel in the middle of the town - they've kept a lot of the old features which add to the charm of the place, including a very impressive church. The rooms were clean and plainly decorated and the staff friendly and welcoming.

We had dinner in town but breakfast in the hotel was excellent.

There was a meeting of Spanish and Portuguese MG car clubs the evening we arrived and the car park was packed with sports cars, however there was plenty of room for the three classic cars we were travelling in and our own 53 year old MG proved very popular!

Good value and we would certainly stay there again.

The Forte de São Francisco as the name says is inside a fortress and is beautifull from outside. Inside there are some parts where they used part of the fortress and are beautifull, but our room for instance was in a new part not very beautifull. The breakfast was good but we didn't try the restaurant for the other meals. In fact my wife liked more the hotel than me. For me good was enough...
