“Good Experience and Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

We stayed for 4 nights last weekend through the Fleetway offer, and thought it was very good value. Without the offer, its more likely we would have stayed in Oporto.
I would agree with many of the previous reviews on TA. This hotel is tastefully done, and in a nice position in the town.
Our sat nav did find the rear parking entrance without any problem, but I can understand why other guests have experienced difficulty.
Upon arrival in the late afternoon, I was unable to get any service at the hotel bar, which was disappointing. There was a wedding going on. But we walked just outside the hotel, and there were a number of bars nearby in the town. Very pleasant in the sun.
We had a couple of sunny days during our stay, and then the weather turned. We were unable to turn the room air-conditioning down below about 24 degrees, and that's a bit too hot for us at night. Also, we asked for our 2 single beds to be made up to a double, but had no luck. Unfortunately we didn't sleep particularly well.
We ate in the restaurant 3 nights, and thought the food was excellent. Loved the tuna in a field of beetroot ! The quality and the service was very good each time we visited.
If you have a car, a trip to the Douro Valley is a must - stunning scenery. The hotel recommended us to Pacheca, which we enjoyed very much. We also visited Guimaraes which is a medieval pedestrian town, which was great. The road to Oporto is dual carriageway, so its easy to reach there as well.
We had a lovely weekend overall, and really liked the area. Would love to return and explore more.

Thank you very much for your feedback about your stay.
I'm happy to know that we were able to find a room for you even without a booking.
About the food in the restaurant, thank you also for the feedback, but I would like to know where we could improve our service or food to make sure we were above the rest of the restaurants you tried during your stay in Portugal.
We hope to welcome you back in a future and be able to improve your feedback about your stay with us.

Thank you from all the Team at Casa da Calçada Relais & Chateaux.

Delightful, old hotel in beautiful surroundings. The staff were helpful, the suite was perfect and for a few days relaxation an ideal break.
No complaints at all. Incredibly good value both in the hotel and town. The restaurant within the hotel is high end and certainly worth a visit.
If purchasing anything in town, take cash as cards are not easily accepted and we had difficulty in finding an ATM which had money in it !

Thank you for your fantastic comment.
I will try to talk to the banks in the near by area, to make sure they don't run out of money in the ATMs.
Thank you in advance for chosing us and hope we can welcome you again soon.

We walked-in to this hotel and looked for a vacancy. It was a good experience. Very helpful staff, who helped us plan our trip to the Doro valley. The restaurant was pretty good (though we had better in our trip in Portugal).

Charming old hotel in lovely surroundings. Beautifully decorated in period style. Really recommend the Michelin starred restaurant & great staff. What a treat! Top tip try the high tea for the bargain price of €5. If you have a hire car be sure to visit the UNESCO world heritage town of Guimaraes with it's castle, palace & lovely Largos.
PS Thanks to fellow guests, Tom & Anna for the loan of the converter plug!

I'm really happy to know that everything went well and that you were able to discover the region (Guimaraes, Braga, and many other hidden pearls).
We hope that we can welcome you back soon in a future.

Just spent a week at the hotel to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary through thespecial offer on from Fleetway travel so felt it was definitely value for money. The hotel is perfect, although not easy to find in the dark and rain which was unfortunately falling when we arrived. We got caught out with the toll on our drive from the airport, not picking up a ticket at the first toll cost us 26 euros! The staff couldn't be more helpful despite us not arriving until 23:00. The room (we had decided to upgrade to a suite) was beautiful with lots of space as we were there for 7 days. Maps and good advice were always provided by the helpful and very pleasant staff, they are to be commended. On our anniversary night we had the restaurant to ourselves and ate off the al a carte menu with my husband having the 13 course "Sensorial Assays" menu plus wine package and I had the 9 course "Renewed Tradition" menu. Whilst is was more than we had ever previously spent on one meal, we felt it was worth it. The food and the service were faultless and a true experience for such as special occasion, so much so I had to take photographs of each course as a memento! Breakfast was excellent with wonderful homemade jams and the poached pears were amazing. Didn't get to try the set menu as we didn't realised it was only available Monday to Friday. The hotel is in a good location, we travelled to Porto on the bus from Amarante as we were advised driving into the city wasn't easy. The bus station in the Amarante was easy to find. Once in Porto we walked across the river and visited the Taylor's Port Factory and had a lovely lunch on their terrace looking out over the river. We drove to Guimaraes and Braga visiting the Bom Jesus do Monte. We drove to Peso Da Regua where you can take boat trips from and Lamego. Driving to Pinhao we took the train along the Douro river having a beautiful meal in the 5 star Vintage House Hotel. A visit to Vila Real and Casa Mateus and we felt we had covered most things to do. Towards the end of our holiday the weather was glorious so we spent our last days taking more time to discover Amarante, with walks along the river and visiting the churches etc. All in all a perfect holiday, both a town and a hotel I would highly recommend.

Room Tip: Upgraded to a suite on the 3rd floor so had views of the river and churches

Thank you very much for this fantastic feedback about your stay in our property.
I'm really happy to see that we really exceed the expectations while staying with us but also that all the places (you were able to do a lot) were also at the same level in terms of quality and service. I'm always saying that since Porto Region isn't a really touristic region, the quality of the service and the friendliness of the people is something that will surprise all the visitors.
The team at Casa da Calçada will be more than happy to help you again to organize your next trip to Casa da Calçada Relais & Chateuax.

After a slightly late arrival at 10pm, we arrived at what proved to be an oasis of elegance and tranquility. Beautifully appointed rooms, helpful staff and a much needed welcome glass of their own produced Vinho Verde! We then spent 4 lovely days in and around the town of Amarante (not a huge amount to do there), but we were into 4 days of relaxing by their very quiet pool area - they could have had a slightly better service here but we suspect that most people go out for the day visiting the nearby Douro Valley.

The breakfast was excellent - good choice of fresh fruit, breads and some hot breakfast for those who enjoy more of a "British" breakfast while away!

We had dinner one night - and chose from their fixed menu which including a bottle of wine was 89 Euros - this was very reasonable considering you are staying at a Relais & Chateaux hotel. The food was magnificent - we could not fault it in any way. With only a few people dining on their outdoor terrace the service we received was first class.

Rooms are large, very tastefully furnished and extremely comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and would not hesitate to go back in the future.
