“One of the Neatest Hotels I've Where *'ve Ever Stayed!”

Greville Arms Hotel

Sep 28, 2007

I absolutely loved this hotel! It's a fascinating, quirky place that was perfect for me.

It's true, the entry from the back parking area is not impressive, and the front desk service was middling. However, the admosphere, decore, layout, and features of the hotel made staying there interesting and fun, and we were able to pick up a free WI-FI link in our room, so internet access was easy and convenient.

It's hard to describe the place, but it's full of dark woodwork, with red carpet. The Ulysses Bar is really neat, with a glass-enclosed, lighted wax life-size sculpture of one of the hotel's past patrons, James Joyce, who mentioned the hotel in his book Ulysses. There is a neat outside deck on the second floor, with heated areas, where smokers can have a puff in comfort.

Our room was comfortable and spacious, and breakfast was fine. The red carpet did tend to show up any bit of paper or fuzz, giving the impression that housekeeping could stand to be a bit more obsessive in vacuuming. However, our room was clean and completely satisfactory.

Most of all, it was the overall ambience I enjoyed. I could imagine myself living there for an extended period. Loved it!

This is a very nice hotel. The interior is slightly dated, but this adds to the charm. The hotel is kept very clean, and the staff are very friendly.

My partner booked us into the Greville Arms hotel for the May bank holiday, was a bit weary when I read the reviews, we had a ball. When we booked in a porter took my bag up to our room which was at the front of the hotel nice comfy clean room, the lobby looked very impressive. The first night we ate in the bar and got a very good meal for €40 including two drinks! There was a band playing upstairs in the bar that kept us entertained all night the place was buzzing. On last night had meal in restaurant it was second to none, only problem we should have booked had to wait for a table but worth it. All in all found staff very friendly, will be back.

To be short this hotel is a dirty kip. Lazy management should wake up and get renovating asap,

rooms are dated to say the least (Avacado bathroom suits - brown tiles)

Food is of canteen standard

Staff moody and unhelpful (why wouldn't they be working in such a drab environment)

the whole place feels filthy

Avoid at all costs

Stay in the Mullingar Park - the extra cash is well worth it

“Disgusting at best”

Greville Arms Hotel

My husband and I recently attended the Lions Convention in Mullingar,
March 2nd-4th and had accommodation at your Hotel. I chose the Greville Arms as our second choice because of the information on the web site. It looked charming and with a lot of character. We were very much looking forward to the experience. Unfortunately, the experience started badly and only continues to get worse.

The parking lot "security" gate continually malfunctioned, restricting entering and exiting the parking lot. It was very obvious that "other" non residents cars were somehow? being allowed entry into the lot, which made it difficult and on one occasion unavailable for us to park in the supposed " residents" lot

The rear entrance from the parking lot is atrocious to say the very least and the stench of whatever was overwhelming. The hall was dark dingy and beyond dirty. This I might ad was our FIRST impression of the establishment. When we entered into back end of the cafeteria we were surprised to say the least. Winding our way through to the front
lobby and reception desk at least that are was respectable and clean.
After booking in we were told our room was three flight up. We are not by any means in wheelchairs or unable to manoeuvre ourselves physically around and are in good health, however we are not 30+ 40+ or 50 years of age anymore. We returned to the car to collect our luggage and "haul" it up to the room. NO offer of assistance was offered. I find this very poor "customer service" especially when we were not aware of the layout of the hotel and the more importantly..
..NO lift was available either.

Our hopes did lift a bit with the condition of the lobby and your front dining room. Very nicely appointed and probably new renovation.
Unfortunately we were not going to be dining in you establishment. Unless you consider your "barn" area which serves guest, and anyone else off the street, breakfast cafeteria style. Which I found again to be very poorly appointed and not hygienic or clean at all. I did attempt breakfast on the Sat morning, but it was very unsatisfactory to say the least.

Things again took a dive as we climbed the multi levels of stairs, loaded with luggage, in an attempt to "find" guest rooms. The staircases were filthy and got progressively worse the more levels we reached. Cigarette end, rubbish and dust that were there on Friday were also there when we left on Sunday. I wonder if you have general house cleaning at all.

By this time we had resolved that if the room itself was not any better we would NOT be staying, however the saving grace for the shabby, dreary dated room was the bathroom, most important, seemed to have been newly renovated and was clean, and acceptable.

There were other issues but I will not prolong this message any further, I think you can get the message of what we thought of your accommodation. What I am most upset about is that the amount of money
that you have the almightily nerve to charge, an outrageous per person per night rate. We would have been much much better off to have booked into a nice clean B&B for only €35-€40 per night. Considering that we paid €300 for accommodation and this is what we got for it I would say we not only have the right to complain but to add this experience to the list of "RIP OFF IRELAND" offenders.
