What can I say. If you are interested in staying in a Castle that is hundreds of years old, this is the place for you. However, if you are interested in an accomodation that is hundreds of years old, you might want to rethink you decision. My wife and I stayed one night at Markree and was thankful we only stayed one day. The first impression was the lack of any greeting and the 52 step entry we lugged our bags up. The first room we were given was on the forth level, more bag lugging. When we finally found the room (not and easy task) we were greeted by water falling on the bed from the leaking ceiling. When we went back down the three levels to the desk and complained, we were reassigned to the "Johnny Cash" room. Apparently, Johnny stayed in that room at one time and I seriously doubt the draperies, linens and Upholstery have been changed since his stay, probably back in the 50's. As a Castle, Markree has charm and is interesting. As a hotel accomodation, I would rather stay somewhere else.

“Atmospheric but dirty!!!”

Markree Castle Hotel

Jun 20, 2007

I stayed here in April for 2 nights for a friends wedding. Me and my husband got a reasonable deal (225 2bb1d pp). I had read the reviews here and was dying to see it and it did not dissipoint- the drive up that is. The castle exterior is stunning and on a sunny day really beautiful indeed. The stairway up to the reception area is gorgeous too but our room (no 2 i think, ) was really bad- white wicker garden furniture set, tiny battered portable tv grubby bedclothes, general air of grime. I hear what previous guests are saying re shabby chic but there has to be basic standards!!and dirt is never appealing. Our friends are more vocal than us and complained about their room to be told that it was an old castle and what do you expect. They were insistant and were moved to an absolutely huge room which they liked but there really has to be some minimum standards ther..startng with cleanliness!!There was an open fire which was attractive and gave off a nice smoky smell but they really need to spend a few euros on the place!!The food, I had heard wonderful reports of and the chef must have been off the days we ate their!!The salmon was truely the worst I've ever eaten.-rubbery and slimy. I'm not a picky person usually but I wanted to prepare people. Picture potential etc cannot be beaten though!and our exp of staff was good.

“Authentic Castle experience (with everything that goes with it)”

Markree Castle Hotel

Jun 1, 2007

This was a truly authentic Castle stay, unlike an old castle turned into a modern day hotel. This means that the stairs were narrow and creaky, the walls were thin, and some of the furniture was worn. But, this is what makes it feel like you are staying in an old Castle manor house from the 1920s. We loved our stay, just bed and breakfast, but avoid rooms 14 or 15! They were like "servants quarters" in terms of architecture and furnishing. They were very nice and clean, but the room my parents stayed in, room 10, looked and felt like a "castle" room. It felt like something out of the movie Gosford Park...I kept looking for my ladies maid. :) Highly recommend this hotel for an "authentic" castle feel.

“Home from Home”

Markree Castle Hotel

May 13, 2007

If you are looking for a 'real' castle experience this is the place for you. It exhudes old world charm unlike some of the more modern, over-done castle hotels. If you are looking for luxary and the five-star experiece you'd be best elsewhere but the Markree is warm, friendly and relaxing. I was sad when they couldn't accommodate me for longer because of a wedding coming in... but what a place to get married.

The staff are friendly and the food is lovely, especially the scones. The room wasn't the most luxurious but comfortable and clean- and unique (our bathroom was downstairs!) with amazing views. The furniture was all antique and made the overall experience very authetic. Prices were reasonable, especially for food and we got a great B&B package through the website.

“Funky Room...Great Dinner”

Markree Castle Hotel

Jan 19, 2007
4/4 found this review helpful

Just back from a trip to Ireland. We stayed here on a Thursday night. Our rate included dinner for 2 and breakfast for 2 including the room. I have to say that the meals were excellent. However the room was really funky. The bathroom was OK and I use cleanliness as the major factor. The bedroom, despite being quite large, really needed some TLC in terms of furniture. It was old and I did not hang anything in the wardrobe or put anything in a drawer. The bed was low to the ground, something I'd never experienced in Ireland before. The TV got 2 stations and occasionally a 3rd. While we definitely enjoyed the stay, I can't say I would go back to this facility again.
