“Needs to improve!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013 via mobile

First time in a castle and just didn't get the wow factor! Now we all loved the authentic smell of the turf fire on entry and Alex at reception was what made it more bearable along with Lorna.
I just felt that staff where missing at certain moments and when we would go to our rooms they seem to sit around on chairs upstairs avoiding doing much. Bar was fine when it was staffed, food needs to improve!!! We ate breakfast that seemed to have been under a heat lamp for a while as rashers were tough, pudding dry and sausages tough, which put us off having dinner the first night, we tried dinner in the next night but found the same, steak not cooked to medium, lamp over done... I could go on about phone being broke in room ect and a dirty towel.
I did like the feel if the place just thought it fell short on a few things that could have made it great!!!

I think the reviews I read on here mainly get it spot on. This is a real and old historical building, so it is warts and all! So don't go expecting 4-5 star hotel cleanliness and amenities because you will be disappointed. I mean, just imagine trying to maintain an old castle of this size without losing any of the authenticity. Can't be easy, so I think Markree are doing a grand job. If you like your history and old buildings, you'll love exploring the nooks and crannies and sitting in the brilliant old bar and National Trust-esque restaurant. The grounds too are fab - really good fun to explore. There's also just a nice element of creepiness! A mention has to go to the staff who were genuinely chatty, friendly and efficient. To finish, you will be disappointed if you go here expecting a chic, spa-type and souless polished hotel. There are 'quirks' (like the water pump which hummed incessantly beside our room, argh!) but if you want something a bit more authentic and unique, you should enjoy Markree!

We were very happy with our stay at Markree Castle. The castle grounds are beautiful and well situated to the nearby town of Sligo. The castle is fascinating and the rooms are gorgeous - creaky floors and all sorts of nooks and crannies. Our room had a very comfortable bed, a large, old bathtub and overlooked the back gardens. There is a wonderful bar with a great menu and the breakfast was delicious and served in the very grand dining hall. We happened to stay on a day when the owner was giving a tour of the castle, which made our stay even more special.

Wow, what a great place to stay. No it's not a 4 star Hotel, it's a real castle, complete with warts and all. Very beautiful with tons of old world charm. Went on a family trip to Ireland and stayed our first night at Markree Castle. The staff are very warm and friendly and the they will serve you drinks and food all night if you want. The bar never closes and the staff are always at your service with a smile. The kids are in their 20s and were like little school kids exploring the property and all of the interesting nooks and crannies of the place.

We loved it and would highly recommend to anyone who wants a change from the Hotel scene and do something different. A short drive to some amazing restaurants in Sligo and some really beautiful beaches such as Rosses Point.

Stayed here just after Christmas. They had some weddings booked in so the hotel was lively. Full of character and atmosphere. However, the place seemed understaffed (possibly because of the wedding activities). Bar service was therefore not great, as the barman kept disappearing to tend to other duties (it is difficult to get away with this in the bar of an Irish hotel). Room was very "retro" with ancient bed, which was nevertheless comfortable enough, if a little small. The fact that it's a castle means they can get away with this. The bathroom was huge, with OK fixtures. Lovely view of the gardens and river from the room.

We ate dinner in the hotel. Service was good; food was serviceable at best. Next morning I was late for breakfast but they served anyway - which was nice as they were preparing the room for the wedding. Breakfast was a good choice - the ubiquitous "full Irish" but also a good selection of yoghurt, cereals and fruit.

Lovely grounds which we walked around before departing. An engaging stay, too brief. Would like to return with warmer weather and less wedding activity.

Beautiful part of Ireland. Scenery in this part of the country is beautiful. Hotel itself is a lovely retreat with authentic castle features both inside and out. Small but well maintained gardens surround the castle. Plenty of activities nearby and only 10 mins drive to sligo town. Food service was slow but food was of high standard at the wedding function but not so good as an individual guest. Rooms had all mod cons. Would visit again but would be sure to have a room not beside whatever generater or pump that made noise every 60 secs from 5am.
