“Real castle experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

Stayed her mid November so it was a bit chilly weatherwise. You have to enter the reception via two flights of steps (wheelchair access is available) to reach a huge hall with a massive open fire place. It is the real castle experience complete with a wooden balcony which runs the whole way round the main hall. There is a fine wooden stairway with a large stained glass window of Henry VIII and other figures. We had accommodation on 3 levels in a tower of the castle. Being November it was a little bit cool in the tower but the accommodation was very good. It would not suit anyone with difficulty climbing stairs though.
The castle is very clean, the staff are very welcoming and friendly and the dining room and large lounge (like a ballroom in other days) are beautifully decorated with plaster work and woodwork. It is very reasonably priced and the breakfast was excellent. My advice would be to approach the castle from the N5 road. We went via Dromahair from the Enniskillen to Sligo road but signage was very poor in that part of Leitrim. I think that summer time would be lovely there and Christmas time would create a lovely atmosphere. Some people like the idea thinking of the castle having non-paying residents but we saw and heard nothing of the kind. All in all it was a very enjoyable experience staying there and you are sure to enjoy it.

Markree is truly unique and a very welcome change from the hundreds of bland hotels built in the last two decades. Originally built on a 32,000 acre estate, the castle itself is the real thing with huge wood burning fires and comfortable furnishings. The castle is run by a small but dedicated team all of whom are friendly and anxious to please. Would definitely recommend as a great location to chill out. Snacks and dinner both very good but breakfast not up to the same high standard. Look forward to returning soon

We spent a couple of days here unwinding after some hard weeks at work. It's a great place to stay - comfortable and welcoming and in no way stuffy. The staff couldn't be more helpful and it was a delight to be in a hotel that allows dogs to stay, though we left our own at home. Dinner in the dining room was excellent and the wine list is very comprehensive with some good value compared to other restaurants. Best of all the place has bags of quirky character -our bedroom floor had a distinct slope!

Just home from a great trip to Markree Castle. Its an amazing place ... They looked after us all brilliantly, including my dog Ruairi !!
The castle is gorgeous, grounds stunning but it's the staff that really make it a pleasure .. Simon on reception, Alex, also on reception and Jeromy (I think.,,?!!) French guy in the restaurant.. Couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating.
I'd highly recommend it to anyone who really appreciates great service in a wonderful surrounding.

Room Tip: Room 20 I hear !!

My wife, brother and myself stayed at Markree for two nights and were quite pleased with the site, the accommodations and most of all the friendliness of the staff. Whether it was at check in or the on site pub the staff was great. The overall castle had a comfortable and authentic feel to it and didn't have the touristy vibe that I've heard is prevalent amongst some of these castle retreats.
I would recommend the Markree and would love to return in the future.

How often do you get to stay in a castle? A real, honest to goodness castle? If it is an experience you would like Markree Castle is your place. The castle has been owned by the Cooper family for more than 400 years!

The castle is imposing, the surrounding gardens and grounds are magnificent. It was great fun to walk around and explore the property. We visited the horses in their pasture and saw sheep grazing the grounds, and thoroughly enjoyed the beauty and the quiet. Our stay was brief but relaxing.

We stayed an a crisp October night, Our room was warm, enormous and nicely appointed with furniture you might expect to find in old hotel. There was an antique armoire, a coffee table and easy chairs. The bed could have been a bit more comfortable and the plumbing could have been a bit more modern, but after all this is a castle that is more than 400 years old. Luxurious? No. Fun? Absolutely!

The castle's grander is in its public places. We were welcomed by a roaring fire in the central hall, enjoyed a drink in an intimate pub, and relaxed in an elegant lobby. The dining room was both formal and beautiful. The lands and buildings could easily be the set of a movie.

We visited Markree Castle as a part of a tour group. At dinner we were greeted by the owner who spent a few minutes telling us about this history of his family and the castle. He was both friendly and fascinating.

If you have an opportunity to stay at Markree Castle you will have a uniquely enjoyable stay!
