“Restaurant :(”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

I went into Gleesons with my family while passing through Roscommon Town and what we expected to be a good lunch with the look at the place, I now know understand the term "Looks can be deceiving".

The place itself was beautiful and the staff were nice but the food didn't come close to the rest of the place which was a let down on expectations!

The time we waited for our food in a lunch time period was nearly 30 minutes and this is where the problem was made.

Cod was overcooked, tasteless and ruined, should have been binned by chef if worth his salt.

Kids chicken gougons were a very dark brown and these were for a 3 year old which would have being like shards if he was to eat them. Now the waitress did come to our assistance and replace these with a burger, which was very nice of her and said we could get a burger in 5 minutes. Great, 15 minutes later burger arrived, so I lifted the top part off the bun and the burger was black, so turned the burger around to see the other side an it had the face of it cut off assuming this was so burnt and black and removed it, another dish that should have being put in the bin. Adding to that the bun was about 7 inch diameter and burger was about 3 inch which did nothing for presentation, it was same bun for kids and adults meals!

No tap water was available due to restrictions in the town, but a liter bottle of water was €4.95 which I found a bit to much and thought this was an avenue due to the situation. I thought a hotel such as this should have a system to purify any tap supply for drinking, maybe not but I think it is a must in this day and age for business of this type.

When going to pay I was asked how was the meal and I said "just okay" and she asked what was wrong so I told her the kids burgers were over cooked and also the cod. She said I can deduct something so I said whatever she thinks as I was willing to pay for it, she deducted 1 kids burger, and our bill was over €50 after that, which was still far too much for the quality of the food we received.

I hate doing reviews like this especially when the staff were nice and surroundings were lovely, but when you go out to eat in this current climate you should at least get what your paying for and not something you would get in a chipper after a nightclub.

Overall we would not go back when in Roscommon town again, sorry :(

We were just driving through Roscommon with a desire to see the nearby castle when it was time for a midday meal. What we were looking for was quick, light, and good. We found our way to Gleeson's and were surprised by the nice-sized dining areas.

Their menu was diverse and more extensive than I would have expected. While there were many items that looked great if we'd wanted a larger meal, we were looking for something lighter.

We were served by Ken, who directed us toward the best items for our 'quick, light, and good' needs; and, gave excellent guidance to the one of us with gluten intolerance. In addition to giving us good advice, Ken was very personable and kept things moving briskly which we appreciated.

Finally, we all found the food to be excellent; especially the freshly baked bread that accompanied our order. Seriously, I'm starting to get hungry just remembering our great lunch at Gleeson's.

If back through this area, I would definitely like to spend a night here and enjoy an evening meal. Gleeson's is located downtown directly across from a nice parking area.

We had read about Gleesons and it was also one of the suggestions by our innkeeper of a place to eat and get local information. We stopped by first to get the tourist information and we were not disappointed. More than just a rack filled with brochures, one of the owners (can't remember her name) spent a significant amount of time with us telling us lots of good places to see besides the obvious ones. We came back for dinner the next night and again were not disappointed. All of the wait staff were extremely pleasant, helpful and attentive (but not in an obtrusive way). Our dinners (lamb and chicken) were very good. The portions were more than ample in the pleasant atmosphere.

Do not miss this gem of a restaurant, best to bide the hunger a while longer. Seems as though it's been here for ever. We four called in for a light lunch on Sunday 26th May 2013 and were welcomed like the proverbial 'son who was lost.' An air of efficiency, family orientation, and honest good home cooked food. They will prepare anything within reason, if it's on the premises.
Their roast beef is a real treasure. Take time to enjoy, well worthy a detour.

This is our second stay at this property. We were checked in and very kindly upgraded to one of the suites which was marvellous. My comments last year mentioned that the hotel beds had blankets rather than duvets, and I was very pleased this year that the blankets had been replaced by nice cozy duvets and crisp white covers. We were offered a free pot of tea and a cake in the café next door on arrival, which was most welcome after our long journey from the UK. We did have an evening meal in the restaurant, which was sadly almost deserted and therefore lacking atmosphere, but the food came promptly and well presented, and the menu offered a reasonable choice. The sultana & fennel bread which came before the meal is just delicious. Breakfast was very good and plentiful - with all the usual offerings, mixed and matched to order, plus wonderful homemade scones and jam, which were totally delicious. The hotel is right in the centre of town, close to numerous pubs, shops etc, I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone passing through, or wanting to stay near Roscommon, and will definitely be staying here again next time I am in the area.
